I have been years ago but it was limited to Manistique and Taquamenon falls. This year we (have 2 kids ages 7 & 9)are planing an 8 day trip and would really like to hit the pictured rocks by Lake Superior. Does anyone have knowledge of the campsites in the area? I'm looking at 12 mile beach. I can look at all the photos online but am curious how it is based on experience. Like is the water too cold to dip in? Will it be too cold even with a wet suit? We plan to take the kids kayaking at Pictured rocks. What activities can you recommend based on experience? We also plan on doing some hiking and love quaint little towns. Looking for lodging recommendations too in case this camping thing does not work out. This will only be our second camping trip and our first primitive one. Pit toilets, is it really as bad as it sounds?

TIA

We went last summer and had a BLAST! I had an 8 year old and a 1 year old at the time.

We went to Miners Beach. It was chilly, the lake usually is, but not so much that we didn't swim. We also went to the log slide. There was a short "hike" on a trail to get to it. There was a HUGE log hauler that we saw on the way. The "slide" goes down to the water. Since there was NO WAY I was going to go down with a 1 year old, my son and hubby went. They had on their swim suits, so they went swimming at the bottom and cooled off. Take water along if you go there. You can google it for the exact location.

We also just went driving one day and pulled off at one of the side of the road places. It turned out to be called the "shallows" . It was SO shallow WAY far out. And it was super warm since it was so shallow. My son thought it was neat to go that far out in Lake Superior! There were a few holes, but it was fine.

My hubby and son took one of the sunken ship tours, too. It was too long for the baby and I , but they loved it. That was out of Mackinaw City , I think though.

We went to a small zoo up there and a bear farm. Can't remember the names (I think the zoo began with a G).

It was such a laid back vacation. We all loved it! Have fun!!!! And eat some pasties!!! (If You go to Muldoon's they have great ones to buy and take home! 1246 W State Highway M28, Munising, MI 49862 )

I love the UP!!!! If I could afford to move, that is where you will find me (does not matter where!!!) Everyone is so nice too!!! I have an aunt that lives in Munising, and an aunt that lives in Christmas. My stepdad has a cabin on Round Lake. So much to do an see on the way up too. Mackinaw, St. Ignace, I could go on and on. The drive alone on US 2 is so breathtaking. Pictured rocks are amazing!!! Lake Superior is cold until the end of August (be careful where you swim-currents, waves, and rocks!!!) Pack extra jacks, and bring a lot of bug spray. The black flies and mosquitoes are terrible (especially this year.) Groceries are expensive so pack extra.

We love the UP! Our favorite camping sort of near Pictured Rocks is Colwell Lake - I think it is off of H-13? Has 5 electric hookups as well - nice little fishing pier and about 25 minutes from Pictured Rocks...For pit toilets, they are very clean and nice. The shipwreck tour in Munising is fun as well and we love to go over to Grand Marais to go rock hounding on the shores and walk west on the beach to a waterfall there... Marquette is only an hour from Munising - bigger town and a great children's museum there for a rainy day outing...
There is a cool hike, hard to find but fun nonetheless just south and west of Munising we go to, can't remember the name right now...Will find out and re-post, but it came from the book, "199 Waterfalls in Michigan" - 198 of them in the UP - we would base many of our hikes on that book...

Have fun! Before our son came along, we would go to the UP every year to camp in the fall when the colors were blazing - about 12 years in a row! Been and seen lots there...

We have camped fequently in that area. We found the best time to go is the end of July/beginning of August. Lake Superior is always cold but those few weeks are the best (weather and black fly season is over). 12 Mile is a nice rustic camp ground, but sometimes the wind coming off the lake can be a bit cold. We also stayed at some other rustic sites (you can find a list on the state dnr site or search national forest campgrounds). Munising is a nice little town in the area with a couple inexpensive hotels and a laundry mat. There are Pictured Rock tours, ship wreck tours, a tour of the Grand Island, mutiple water falls, trails, etc. We always had a good time.
