I have twins and am always looking for good opportunities to save. Does anybody have suggestions for upcoming sales or stores where you can get quality used kid gear?

The store two doors down from my store (Gossamer) is a great resale shop. It's called "Mamas and Papas". They have womens clothing, maternity, and children's good quality clothes. I got to designer dresses for my nieces for Easter there recently.

Keep an eye on Craiglist in the Baby + Kids section or do a search for consignment. There is a sale this weekend at the expo center (http://www.portland.jbfsale.com/). Another one is coming up in May http://cousinscloset.blogspot.com/ I think there is another one this weekend in Washougal. I love Once Upon a Child in Vancouver, but that may be too far for you. The other thing I've found is (unless you want to dress them alike)is Goodwill (I personally like going to the Goodwill Outlet) or Value Village. I've found some really nice things and good brand names - Gymboree, etc. The only problem is you have to have a a bit of time to search through things. I'm picky, so it takes a bit longer - my husband is pretty good at watching the girls for me.

Have fun!

Not consignment/used, but I picked up a tip from a friend who *buys ahead* with sales at Old Navy. I found the new clothes on the seasonal sale and clearance (rather than the specials on this seasons stuff) are the same price or less in general than clothes in the consignment shops. So last fall I stocked up on t-shirts and shorts for my son for this summer, they were around $1.99 - $3.99 each.

There's a resale on SE Division around 30th, I think, that I've been wanting to check, it always looks packed with stuff. I've never had any luck at Goodwill, for how many clothes I know get donated, there wasn't much on the racks.

I also wonder what happens to all the gently worn stuff. We tried to consign stuff that was hardly touched, and they rejected bags and took like 1 shirt. It was all current and good quality. I don't know why the consignment stores don't just take it and sell them for $2, instead of trying to just stick with things they can sell for $8. It makes me not use the consignment stores for either side (especially because of the Old Navy thing I'm doing now).

Anyway good luck, I'm going to keep checking on the advice you get!

I found this great little site called zwaggle your put your stuff that you need to get rid of online and you accumulate points, then you can use the points toward getting stuff online. When I did this just a few weeks ago I got 4 skirts and a shirt for a total of 8.00. All you pay is the shipping I found this to be very inexpesive.
Good luck

I have also googled "consignment stores" and found lots of great stores in Portland, this has been my new quest recently as I do not want to pay retail prices.
Bella Stella in NE
Sweet Peas in Sellwood
Piccolinas 26th/SE Clinton

There are also other consignment sales out there, I went to one recently they do in the spring and then in the fall. Just google consignment sales portland, OR.

Craigslist has also been a huge hit for me too!!
Good luck!

Have you heard of Pass It On Sales? They just had their spring sales - there is one in Portland and one n Hillsboro. It's only twice a year, but it's realy well organized and you get 70% (or more!) of your sales! The next sales will be the end of September or early October. You can check them out at www.passitonsales.com

In addition to Pass It On, Just Between Friends, and Little Feet Repeat sales, there is the gigantic Catlin Gabel Rummage Sale each year at the Expo Center. Usually right at the end of October/beginning of November, and it's like the Powell's Books of garage sales. Each department (books, tools, clothing, housewares) could be a resale shop of its own. Right on the MAX line too!
