Any Tips for Weaning from Pacifier?

My 9-month-old daughter uses her pacifier only in her crib, to go to sleep. She will be starting part-time day-care in a few months and I'd like to wean her from her pacifier before then if at all possible. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!

Samilji,

hi, my son took the pacifier for bed time also. I started out by taking it away at nap time and moving forward to night time. You have to be serious about it and make sure not to take it away once then give it back because all it does is tease them. it did take about three or four days and then he found comfort in his blanket. good luck. Hi!

I had the same problem with my now 19 month old son. I didn't get him completley off the paci, but within 2 weeks of day care, they got him off. I was easier because the other kids didn't have one, and I didn't have to hear him cry for it. It's easier when your hearts not breaking listening to them cry so hard for it.

I know for my daughter I just took it away and a couple days later she was used to not having it.. same with the bottle but she threw a bigger fuss and I was lazy so I let her hang onto it longer.. the key is just sticking to it... even though its just as h*** o* you.
My cousin has a daughter who is 3 and she will still ask for it and her mom will give it to her which is so not cute.
I think my daughter was about 9 months when I took her "sucker" away.. I just remember the first few days being tough.. and then they forget.. Hope that helpes at a little.. Angie

Hi,
My oldest had her passy until she was 3, we tried everything to get rid of it. We cut it down, gave it to the dog, threw it away cold turkey. Always she got it back! Finally at 3 she went to the dentist and he told her it was bad for her teeth, and she threw it away herself. Now my 2nd child is 2yrs old and still has hers, I think that when they are ready they will give it up, it has been a security thing for both of mine. Take heed though, we only get it at bed time after a certain age, I don't think a 3yr old should be out in public with one in their mouth. If you choose to take it away now and your child doesn't have a problem with that go for it, some of my friends kids never cared a thing about the passy they were content without it.

By only giving her the pacifier at sleep times, you're off to a great start! My daughter was addicted, so when she was nearing one year, giving it to her at bedtime was how I started the weaning process. I would suggest taking it away at one bedtime this week, two bedtimes next week, three the next...etc. If she's screaming, just go to her every several minutes and reassure her and most of the time she'll give in eventually. It may happen quicker than you'd think. The pacifier is an age appropriate habit until age one year, so you have plenty of time since it sounds like that's around when she'll be starting day care. Good luck!
