Any Suggestions for Good Winter Coat for Toddler?

Hi Mamas! My son is 14 mo. and I'm wondering what sort of winter coat to get him for those REALLY cold winter days we get in VA. I bought him a nice Columbia parka that's insulated with a thick fleece liner, but I'm worried it isn't going to cut it when it's 15 degrees out before the windchill. My other dillemma is that he needs to fit in his car seat with it on for the short ride to daycare in the mornings. I've been considering the puffy Old Navy coat- seems to have good reviews and it's on sale. It's pretty bulky though!
Also, any advice on good mittens (that are easy to get on and that stay on)? How about keeping the feet warm?
It was so easy with the one-piece bunting suit last winter!
Thanks,
L.

What can I do next?

I would buy a heavy coat but remember you should take it off of him when in his car seat so the belts will hold him properly. Children's Place as a great selection of coats, matching mittens, and hats.

I like Land's End and they tell you the degree it is good down to. Don't put him in it in his carseat though. I know it is difficult, but I would just sit next to him in the back, get him out and put the coat on, then take him out of the car.

I read somewhere that you don't want puffy coats in the car seats because in an accident the child can slip out of the car seat more easily. LL Bean and Lands End have Thinsulate coats. They are warm but not thick.

He should not be wearing his jacket in the car that is very dangerous if you got in a car accident it will compress and he can be thrown from the seat if you do not believe me buckle him with a winter coat on then take him out and then buckle him without adjusting the straps. I buckle my son in the car and then place the jacket on him backwards keeps him just as warm in the car plus he can get it off when he gets hot.
We always buy columbia they are designed to keep you warm without all the bulk Bulkier does not always equal warmer.

I love Lands End stuff, for myself and always for my daughter, who is now 16. When she was born, my husbands work had an incentive program, and we opted to earn points to buy from their catalog and I fell in love with many of their things, including outerwear.

I love the Sport Squall jackets. They are thin but so very very warm. I can not stand bulk but need to be warm here in Minnesota! Windchill, blustery snowy days...we get it all and frigid temps as well. My daughter lived in their snowsuits and then pants and then the SPort Squalls when they came out a while back. I have one too and am looking to upgrade this year...I need to see what colors they have!

If you try it...remember you can return it at any Sears location without having to pay the shipping again (to ship it back). Most Sears carry some Lands End stuff, but mostly Womens I think. They also have mittens and boots..hats and all that. I have boots and a few coats from Lands End just waiting to be pulled out and back into the closet for the season..but the Sport Squall line is my favorite...very warm and not bulky. They ahve it all temp rated.

This is the link to the boys page...search parameters by size, temp rating etc on the left side!

Good luck....I am going back to look at the womens! :-)

I have been going through the same dilemma, however, I like the puffy type jackets (the look of them). I ended up finding some for $10 at walmart.com and orderd them (free shipping!). If they aren't warm enough or I want to buy them another one, I won't have spent a ton of money already. I just have a hard time spending $50 on a jacket for a toddler that will only wear it for a year!

I got my son a coat from Osh Kosh two years ago in a bigger size (he is 3 now) and it still works for me. It is warm and durable, it washes easy and it hides stains. Works for me even in the coldest weather.

I buy my kids (now 4 1/2 and almost 7) the 3 in 1 coats from The Childrens Place. They are extremely well made and very durable! They even go thru the wash GREAT! I just love them and will continue to keep buying them year after year as they grow. =0)

If you decide you like it and order it, enter this coupon code for 20% off: OCTOBER10A That code should be good thru 11/15/10. =0)

Hi L.! I lived in Rochester, NY when my kids were little (brrrrrr!!!) and I found that layering worked better than one big coat. I always put undershirts on them, then a long sleeve T, then a sweater or sweatshirt. They obviously had winter coats too, but I bought whatever was not too expensive or too bulky. You lose a lot of heat through your head too, so get a nice fleece hat. Now that my kids are older I spend a little more money on their coats. They need a good coat b/c they stand at the bus stop, go outside during recess unless it's below freezing, etc. Plus, they're growing a little slower now, so their coats from last year will fit this year too (we just tried them on last weekend and we're good - yay!) So anyway, now I buy Lands End. I spent about $50 on each of their coats last year (I haven't bought the over $100 ones yet!) Lands End is the best company EVER!! They will take back ANYTHING. And being able to take a return to Sears is so convenient. One time I was disappointed that my Lands End bathing suit had worn out after only one season, so out of curiosity to see what they'd do I mailed it back to them with a note explaining how bummed I was. They sent me a check within 2 weeks for the full price!!

Anyway, I think at 14 months you probably don't have to worry too much about the cold since he won't be sitting out in it for long. Winter is definitely a hard time when you have little ones!!

We do a "car coat" for the car seat - something like a fleece jacket and a blanket if necessary. We bring along the bigger coat for emergencies. It is a pain, but kids do not fit in the car seat properly with a big coat, plus it is very hot. We bought a snow suit, coat and pants from Sears last year (preseason) for $35 on sale, reg. price $75. I held up beautifully and was warm in the blizzard!
