So What Happened?

i did the frontline application, to no avain, then found a really expensive brand at Petsmart, cant think of the name off the top on my head, but all of a sudden, they were gone... green and white package, let me think... uh SENTRY PRO was the name of it! worked wonders, you squeeze it between shoulder blades all the way down to the tip of the tail, and in 2 days all the ticks were gone!
thank you for all the suggestions on this!

You know I was at the pet store and the lady behind the counter said.....Everyone always buys all this bug stuff, all I do is put a fresh clove of garlic minced up in every bowl of my animal's food and I never have a problem. I saw it on Animal Planet years ago and it works.... Hope this helps. Colleen

I here that peanut nut butter works because it cuts of air to the tick and it falls off . This is only good for a few ticks or you can buy tick and flea spray at Petco and spray directly on the bug and wait for them to fall off, which will not be long at all.

I had this problem as well. The only way to get it taken care of for my dog who has thick hair was we had to shave her down. Then we got Hartz Advanced spray. My dog is an indoor/outdoor dog (more indoor) so I was amazed that with the collar she was getting them. But once we shaved her and started putting on the Hartz (it comes in a blue spray bottle at Fry's and Wal Mart) it has worked great.

Once you get rid of the initial infestation, adding Brewer's Yeast to their food (with powdered garlic it's even better) will really help keep them repelled. You can find it at New Life health food stores in the bulk section...you only need maybe a teaspoon a day sprinkled on it. Works wonders for my animals.

I have a friend whose daughter uses Sol-U-Guard botanical on her dogs, and the dogs have no ticks or fleas. She brushes their fur, and then sprays them with the Sol-U-Guard. It is a natural disinfectant, without harsh ingredients. It is a product manufactured by Melaleauca. I shop with the company, and use their products also. If you would like more information, just send me an email. It might be a good idea to have your yard treated also.

Hi E., You could always try by soaking some cotton pads in regular household vinegar and applying to the tick for a short time. They sometimes then pull their pincers back out and then you are ok. Other than that you can get a spray from the Vet's that is for Fleas and Ticks. The Vet may suggest he take them off but that is up to you whether you want to pay the vet to do it. Try to make sure that no tick leaves its head behind in the skin as this can cause an infection for your dog.
You could always just give your Vet a ring first and ask them about suggestions. I suppose it depends on just how many ticks that is on your dog.

Good Luck.

Ticks are small blood sucking parasites that belong to the arachnid family. They have eight legs and come in two types; one with a hard outer shell and one with a soft outer shell. Soft shelled ticks live in crevices and will only come out to feed, while hard shelled ticks spend long periods of time attached to their host. Ticks feed on blood, which is a great source of proteins and lipids. They feed on mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians and as such are often found on domestic pets and even on humans.
Tick Removal
When a tick attaches itself to it’s host it actually buries its head under the surface of your skin, so it is very important that you do not just try to yank it out. This could leave is mouth parts and head under your skin which can lead to infection.

Once you have found a tick, you will want to take a pair of tweezers and put them around the tick, as close to the surface of your skin as possible. Grab onto the tick and pull straight back. You might have to wiggle the tweezers a bit to get the tick to come out. Pull slowly but firmly. Once it is out, you can either burn it, or wrap it up in tissue and flush it down the toilet. Don’t simply throw it in the trash, as it will likely climb out and bite you again. You also do not want to crush it with your hand or feet as that can release any toxins present inside the ticks body. Once the tick is removed, carefully wash the site of the bite with soap and water. You should also clean it with some alcohol or betadine and consider placing it into a sealed container and storing it in your refrigerator for a month in case you develop any symptoms. Having the tick that bit you could help doctors diagnose your disorder.

Although there are many home remedies for removing ticks such a putting petroleum jelly, nail polish, alcohol or a hot match on the tick’s body, there are NOT recommended. While they are usually successful in removing the tick, it will be under a great amount of stress and is more likely release toxins into your body before it’s removed. Using one of these methods can increase your chances of getting a tick borne illness.

We have tick invasions about twice a year, ever since moving to Rio Rancho. The only thing we have found to work is to treat the yard with Grub X. It kills the ticks before they even get to the dogs. Frontline works, but the ticks have to get on the dogs first and bite the dogs to be killed, then they drop off. Our dogs sleep in our kids beds so I don't want the ticks dropping off in their beds!

Frontline works great. Kills the ticks that are on the dogs and they should fall right off once they are dead. an easy way to get it is through 1800-pet-meds or i think pedmeds.com.

E.,

Call your vet, and arrange for them to do a tick dip on your dogs. After that, do the other suggestions. Consider doing the house spray concurrently if need be. I remember, as a kid, this happened to our dog and my parents did the tick dip alone, and the ticks were already in the house; one day we found them crawling around in my own bed covers, and that was after the first dip on our dog; she had to be dipped again. It's not so bad. Once all of this is taken care of, stick with Frontline, or garlic, or whatever works for you.

We've always used frontline on our pets. It's worked great. I would take them to the vet to make sure that the ticks haven't made them sick. We adopted a dog who had no tick repellent before, and tested positive for lyme disease. It was easy enough to control because we caught it early.

you will have to have your dogs get a tic-dip,usally at the vet you might be able to buy it at a pet store but I am not sure. if they have a lot then you should have your back yard sprayed by a pest controll company, if they are not to bad you can add a table spoon of bleach to there water bowl daily, about a capfull per 1 liter of waterticks don't like the way the bleach taste it won't hurt your dogs use less for smaller dogs, it will take a while but they will start to back out and fall off or just starve to death and the easly brushed out, keep bleach in there water to prevent any furture tic familys buliding thier homes on your dogs. good luck

We had them also a few years back. We ended up having to get Terminix Pest Control to help get rid of the ticks themselves. We believe that cats may have been bringing them into our yard. We washed the dog numerous times in the tick shampoo and over a couple months all was getting back to normal. We did use that tick liquid/gel stuff as well as the collars I think. You just squeeze the liquid between the shoulders if I remember correctly. I hope this helps and that you are able to get rid of them. Good luck to you!

Hi E.,

I had the same problem when I moved into my new home, my Golden Retriever and Chocolate Lab had never had even a flea. I took them to Petco and they groomed them and both were given a flea/tick treatment and it has been 5 months and there hasn't been a tick since. The treatment was about $20.00 for each dog, not including the grooming. I also had the back yard treated before we had it landscaped so that was a huge help as well. My vet also recommended Advantage. Hope this helps!

As a veterinary technician, I would recommend Frontline. It's a flea and tick application that lasts at least one month. It's the best. Flea and tick collars usually don't work in my experience. It's kinda expensive, but worth it. You don't want your dog getting Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever (transmitted by ticks and people can get them too). You can buy it online, at veterinary offices and some pet stores. Hope this helps.

You should brush your dog or cat regularly with a special brush made to remove fleas and ticks. It’s also good practice to manually inspect their fur, not only for their own safety, but because they can spread to your family. Washing their bedding, grooming them on a regular basis, and keeping your grass mowed short will help reduce a tick problem.

I would take the dog to the vet to get rid of all of the ticks...I would also have someone come out and spray specificially for ticks at your house and in your yard. If you have close neighbors with dogs you may want to suggest that they get their house sprayed also...

Front line or advantage works best be cautious about using the collars or even the Hartz drops. Please do some internet reaseach befor putting the hartz product it on your animals there have been many animal illness associated with that product. The ticks may be coming from birds. SO maybe an exterminator.

Ugh! We were having the same problem a few weeks ago. My husband and son brought our dogs camping in the White Mountains a couple months ago and brought them home. They were the tiny little ones, too. Horrible as they can cause all sorts of skin reactions and carry diseases. First make sure you stop watering any grass you have - cut it short and let it dry out. I went on-line and there are a lot of tick chats and blogs - just google "how to get rid of ticks" and you will get several. I prefer natural methods rather than chemicals so I was looking at the cedar oil options for yard application. But I haven't seen (picked off) any in a couple weeks now - still checking the dogs ears and between toes for them just in case - but once we stopped watering the lawn, gave them all a bath with a very concentrated all-natural tea tree oil shampoo, and checked all the bedding and house carefully we have thankfully not had the problem I thought we would. Just be vigilant and you can eradicate them. Good luck.

E., Ticks can only reproduce eggs after a blood feed so getting them off your dog is the first step in taking care of the problem. Second, vacumme all the baseboards in your home, this is where tick eggs are most commonly found, once you have vacummed get rid of the bag outside. Wash any bedding that the dog occupies in very hot water. Once all of these steps have been completed hire a professional service to come in and treat your property to ensure any additional live ticks and eggs are killed. Adding garlic to your dog's food will help in keeping more ticks from attaching to your dog in the future. Please feel free to call me directly if you have any additional questions. L. I'm a dog breeder/trainer, etc from years back. I can honestly say to throw away those collars. Do not buy the cheapies in the drug store or Walmart. Advantrix (flea and tick) has worked the best for me. You might check your yard as ticks breed in stones, etc. A good outdoor bug spray should help. Read the label and be sure it is OK around pets and small children. I have a bug phobia and went balistic when I found a tick on my dog. I had to go get Advantrix immediately and since using that regularly, plus the outdoor spray, I have had no problems. This episode was my fault because I recently moved to the southwest and thought ticks were limited to woodland areas. I guarantee this will work.
