My DH works in an ER this is going around right now. No explanation just a fever on and off. They think some sort of virus.

My son had the same thing a few months ago. He showed no other symtoms, did not pull on his ears as if they were bothering him, and did not complain about his throat or ears hurting. I knew that my niece and the neighbors' son down the street had strepp throat about a week before my son started running fever, so I asked his pediatrician to do a throat culture. Sure enough, my son tested positive for strepp throat and never complained about anything hurting!!!

If your pediatrician hasn't already done a throat culture, request one. Your son may have strepp. GOOD LUCK!!!

I would pay attention to how high the fever is. I constantly ran a fever at night as a child, but was not sick. But, since she has tubes in her ears, I would pay attention. Also, she may be sick, but since it is only at night and not during the day, I wouldn't be too concerned as long as she is acting normal and the fever is not high. But, in the end, follow your gut.

It sounds like this could be viral. In viruses, fevers and symptoms tend to come and go and come back in the evening time. It is not uncommon that viruses last 7 to 10 days. Anything beyond this then I would question the doctors advice. Hang in there, I know how it feels to not be able to help your sick child get better.

With a low grade fever there is something the body is trying to fight off on it's own, just keep keep her comfortable and hydrated...One other question, is she urinating normal? Sometimes in the summer they get a little more dehydrated and can get urinary tract infections that will cause a fever, that has happened to my 9 yr old daughter all of her life. She just gets too busy to stop and take a drink and we have to remind her. Also make sure no one is giving your daughter sodas.

Hi S.,

My child had 2-3 sets of tubes between ages 1 and 5. Whenever she had a fever, she almost always had an ear infection. I believe she was 3 when the pediatric ENT (Ear Nose Throat doc) finally removed her tonsils and adenoids. I don't believe she had any more ear infections after that.

How is her throat? Strep should always be ruled out, since a strep infection can go to the heart, cause rheumatic fever, and permanent damage to the heart.

BTW, I had my daughter in the pool a lot, and the doc didn't want her to get any water in her ears with the tubes in--so the ENT doc referred us to an audiologist who took imprints of her ears and made custom, molded ear plugs. They worked GREAT for the pool and bathing.

If you don't feel your pediatrician is on top of your daughter's health, or is too lackadaisical, then check around for a good one and change! If I were you, I would get her to an ENT doc quickly. Fever is a sign that the body is fighting an infection, and it should be addressed. Sometimes the tubes fall out, and need to be replaced.

If she does have sinus and congestion problems, I would consider taking her off WHEAT and DAIRY, as these cause more mucus production--hence, sinus and ear issues.

Best of luck! jenifer

It's probably just a virus that needs to run its course. I had 3 kids with a similar problem this last week. With Virus's meds don't work, you just have to treat the symptoms. Motrin/Ib Profin and tylenol. Fevers always are worse at night too. I don't know why but they are.

My son use to have febrile seizers from fever. It was caused by constant ear infections. I took him to an ENT (ears, nose and throat specialist). They put tubes in his ears and he's been fine ever since.

Well it is common to have fever at night for a virus, but allergies would not cause a fever. I would call the doctor back if you haven't and let him know how long the fever is lasting and how high it gets, or if you are worried enough take your child back to teh doctor. You did not say how old your child is, if she is a baby I'd take her back to the doctor if she has a fever for a week after the last visit, so they can re-check. If your child is a toddler or older and it is just a mild fever (100 or below) I'd call and ask them about it.

Just what I'd do . . .

Good luck.

A week is the point where it is starting to be too long if it is a significant fever (100.4 or higher). It is probably fine, but since a prolonged fever can indicate something more serious, you need to bring her back to the dr. to be rechecked.

Your child may not really have a fever, it could be her metabolism. Whenever, since just about day one, when my child lays fairly still for at least a min. of 15 mins, her body temp starts to rise and it stays higher than normal for the time she is sleeping till about 30 minutes after she wakes up and gets moving. The daycare used to call me everyday to come get her because she had a fever. I told them to wait about 20 min and take her temp again, and it would be normal.

When I toulch her when she is sleeping she feels hot, as if she has a fever, My husband, her father, the exact same thing.
Hopefully this might make you feel a little better.

when babies have fevers like that and its mild, meaning not over 102 on a semi constant basis...my pediatrican said it was because they were teething. You didn't say how old you baby was.

I'm assuming that this is your 2yr old that you are speaking of. I would guess that she is cutting her molars. My DD had no problems with any teeth except her molars. It was horrible, and of course worse at night. She did break a fever with these teeth, but not with any others.
The only other thing I would think it could be is a virus. If she is feeling fine during the day, she is probably wearing herself out and having a hard time getting over it because of how great she feels during the day. I do this to myself all the time.

S.:

you said your child has tubes in her ears. I am assuming it was due to cronic ear infections. My daughter had ear infections and then it went to sinus infections. We went to see an allergist and they did blood work to check for allergies and also did an immunology workup. It came back that she never developed antibodies from 2 of the vaccines she was given, the HIB and the pneumococcal which means she is more prone to infections and could get pneumonia. We went and got her the boosters and are waiting the month to test her for the antibodies. Now as far as the fever I am not sure why she is only getting it at night and if this has anything to do with it but I like to share the experiences we go thru with other parents in hopes that it helps someone else. I wish I had this done when she was 2, it may have saved her from all the infections and antibiotics!!

Good luck with everything!!

Has the fever broke yet and if so, did she break out in a rash? If she has, it could be Roseola- a childhood viral infection. It scares you to death with the fever for so long but once the rash comes it makes you feel alot better. It could be some other viral infection, and I know once the child has reached 2 years old the pedi's are not as concerned as they would be with an infant. If not though, being that she has tubes have they ruled out an ear infection? I know my Pedi always says to come in after 72 hours if the fever has not broken. Good luck!
