Any Red Wine Connoisseurs?

Looking for a special gift for hubby for Father's Day. I love to spoil him on this day. He mentioned a while ago that he would love a bottle of Modavi Merlot Reserve 1997. I remember him saying it would be about $150-$200. I am not finding it just by google. Any ideas where to go? How on earth do I know if I am getting the right thing?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

ETA: I googled Mondavi, correct spelling, originally. My typo was here. Thanks, though.

I'm impressed he knows exactly what wine he wants. How easy is that one?

Great advice already...just wanted to share that I went to Costco recently, one in SoCalif, and spoke with their wine manager, and explained that I needed a very nice thank you bottle of wine. What wonderful deal could he recommend, etc. I bought what he recommended, an Italian Merlot, that they only had one case of, he said it sells for $50, they were selling for $30. I got home and googled it, and he was correct. I love deals. I bought one as a thank you, and one for my husband too.

I work at a winery. I can tell you that 1997 is a library wine and won't be sold at any wine shops unless you call a broker = cha ching! Your best bet is to call the winery directly.

Good luck finding it!

With the full name and year you've got a lot to go on!
Go into your local NICE liquor store (here it would be BevMo, or a specialty place we have called Wine Thieves) and ask for their help. Chances are if they don't have it they can order it.
You may also contact Robert Mondavi directly and ask them where you can get it. Who knows, maybe they can ship it to you!

Do you have a local wine/liquer store?

We have some specialty wine stores here and if they do not have what you are looking for, they can order it. We did that with some Caymus and Rubicon that is pretty pricey.

Since you know the price point and year, it will be easier for someone to help you find it. As you know, many wineries have different "levels" of their wine at different price levels.

Good luck with your search.

You are better off calling a wine specialty store. If I were going anywhere near Kirkwood in the near future I would check for you. I used to know a distributor.

How close are you to the Lake of the Ozarks? The Blue Heron has an extensive wine cellar. They may have it or know where you can get it.

Oh, I don't wana but if you are against the wall PM me, my ex father in law gets his wine from a distributor....but I don't want to call him...but I like you....

We just bought a few bottles of really nice wine (retail value $80-180) for our school auction at Costco. Check around a bit, there is usually only one Costco location in a certain area that carries the high end wine, but the deals are great. Let us know what you buy and if you open it, how it tastes!

S., if you're going to go to the trouble of calling the winery or looking for a distributor... make sure you ask if this is a wine you really want. There are a lot of wines that didn't stand the test of time - that might have seemed good 10 years ago but wouldn't be worth drinking now. Merlot is generally not a wine you'd keep a long time, but this particular one could be different. Anyway, if you can't find it, a good distributor will be able to tell you what characteristics the 1997 wine your husband wanted had and what other wines (in your price range, newer, older, whatever) are similar.

I'd agree with Everley. I found a site that says that particular wine/year should be drank by 2008. I think it may be a little late for that vintage, but you've gotten some great advice from the others.
