Any Other Home Remedies for the Cough

My more poor little guy (2yrs old) has been coughing non stops for the last 2 nights/3days while sleeping. I just put him down a little over a hour ago for his nap and he has coughed the whole time. He's not running a fever, and up until naptime the cough did seem junky, now its kind of dry. But he's obviously really crabby, since he's not sleeping well, I just don't know at what point to take him in. My pediatrician doesn't like prescribing for stuff like this unless they are seen--blah!

I have humidifiers (cool) in their rooms, their mattress are elevated, I've tried the honey, the OTC all natural cough and cold--I even gave him a dose of benadryl this time hoping it was just a post nasal drip giving him the cough (maybe it made it worse)? Vicks vapor rub etc, making sure the nose is clear before putting him down, and to no avail he's coughing like crazy. My tired pregnant state of mind is telling me to take him in (because I'm exhausted from not sleeping because all I hear is him coughing) , but generally we work through these coughs, since I'm told it could take months to get over the "cough" from a cold.

When he's awake he's coughing, but nothing like when he's in bed. I already have to bring him back on the 28th for his 2nd flu shot, I was just there last week for my 3.5 yr olds sinus issues. Is there any other remedy out there someone can fill me in on, before I pack this kid up and head to the pediatricians again...

What can I do next?

I agree with Denise but you have to put a THICK layer of Vicks on the BOTTOM of his feet then cover with cotton socks...works all the time and for adults too. =)

I love this website. It has alot of home remedies.
I like it because people post things they have actually tried and tell you the truth if it worked or not.
One of the things we tried was Vicks Vapo Rub on the feet. Rub the feet then cover with socks before they fall asleep. Not sure how it works, but it stops the cough!
Good luck and GOD BLESS!

Might need a nebulizer. Asthma can be a cough.

Well I am an anti medicine anti vaccine person. (after my daughters first and only vaccine at 18 months, she kept getting sick. Then when coughing at night only the Dr. said it was a sinus infection, so she prescribed like 20 days of antibiotics. It went away. Then weeks later an awful cough set it. The dr. said it was either asthma or bronchitus and prescribed antibiotics. I was very suspect. I then took her the next day to a homeopathic dr. and my current dr (also anti medicine unless absolutely necessary). Both said no brochitus. She did not take the medicine and I used homeopathic stuff. I never went back to the first dr. and now my children at 7 and 9, and have never had antibiotics since (or vaccines).

So, what can you do. Options are, tea with lots of honey and cinnamon (two healers). Also, I have given (which I heard about) was a spoonful of honey with some tumeric on it. (I did that twice a day and my daughter loved it). When I thought one time that I had a sinus infection (because I was coughing only at night like my daughter had been) I went to the homeopathic pharmacy and asked for a recommendation, and it worked. Also, since the time my daughter was told she may have the bronchitus, but did not, the homeopathic remedy that we have used is Briar Rose (for immunity) and Lithy Tree (for coughs). When the kids were younger we did 12 drops (calls for 50 drops for adults). The dr. say that when they are sick we can do it twice a day. You can check out the Dr.'s website for other suggestions http://www.drfeder.com/

Good luck and if he remains sick, I would postpone the flu shot. (my daughter, last year, we think, may have had the swine flu. She had 105 for 5 days and we watched it every day and then it subsided. Natural immunity at its best).

Good luck

Did you put the Vicks on his feet with heavy socks? I have no clue WHY that works but it really does seem to help!

I also use the vicks vapor rub on the feet. I have even used it on myself. Google "the wet sock treatment" we use that on our kids and it is fabulous and free. We also use Chestal by Boiron. It is a little expensive and I usually give a generous teaspoon/tablespoon (whichever the does is) every hour instead of every 2 hours (it is a homeopathic so no risk of overdosing at this level). I find elevating the head and back helps too. Something about laying down really brings out the tickle. Good luck.

It could be asthma. My son has asthma and when he's sick he gets a horrible cough, strong enough to make him throw up. You could also try running a hot shower and sitting in the bathroom with him. I find that works with my son. Good luck!
