I have been very nauseated off and on for well over a year now. I have been to the dr. and they have done blood work, run test, etc. They cannot find anything wrong. They also have failed to give me suggestions on how to hepl relieve the nausea and they will not prescribe me anything. I know that I am not pregnant. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all of the opinions. I went to a different doctor and he did a lot of lab work. Everything came back normal. Right now he has put me on Reglan. So far so good. Thanks again to everyone.

I have basically been nauseous my entire life.
Ginger tea helps. Fresh air helps. Not much else does. I have a genetic kidney disorder that they think may be causing some of my discomfort, but there is nothing really that has been found concretely. I hope you find some relief.

Ginger and ginger ale are helpful. Also, papaya and papaya juice. I would see a dr that will try to really help you. Perhaps its an ulcer, or you've developed one. Nausea for a year certainly isn't normal. Do you consume a lot of caffeine? That could cause it.

When I was pregnant at least, they told me to keep my stomach full and whenever I really started to feel nauseous I would suck on Jolly Ranchers or eat sugary cereal. Is there anything that you eat that makes it worse. Maybe you have an allergy to something you are eating. But I am not a dr. Hope this helps.

If you don't mind my asking, you don't have to answer. What do you do for work from home. I am really wanting to stay home with my kids and just am a little leary about doing the online businesses that promise good income from home.

Hope you get to feeling better.

R.,

Have you sought a second or third opinion? I know it is something I don't usually think of, but I saw on the news the other day that very few people get 2nd opinions, but those who do usually get a different answer and the one they need. Each doc is different and puts their own spin on things I guess. Good luck - I hope you are feeling better soon.

I go to a fantastic chiropractor/acupuncturist in Lee's Summit- his name is Dr. Todd Jones. I would try chiropractic and/or acupuncture for what you have going on! Misalignment in nerves, muscles and bones can cause nausea!! Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

I get extremely nauseated with my migraines. My doc also has never prescribed anything for it (though my sister was able to get Reglan and Zofran). I use Emetrol, which is an over-the-counter anti-nausea liquid. That seems to do a pretty good job.
Have you had your gallbladder checked? If you have gallstones, that will also cause severe nausea.

Have them check your gallbladder by doing a ultrasound and if that is negative, then doing a HIDA scan (nuclear medicine study). Hope this helps!

Are you taking vitamins? Make sure you are getting the right nutrition and enough of the daily vitamins. I think B vitamins are supposed to help with nausea sometimes (I've only heard that it's during pregnancy though, but it might help in general too).

At a pharmacy, they have these wristbands called Sea-Bands (for motion sickness). I used them when I was VERY nauseated with morning sickness with my last pregnancy, and they worked....You might give them a try....Also, eat some ginger candy or gingerale....

I get nauseated easily by a lot of things - most of it is just in my mind, because I am worried, stressed, or whatever is bothering me at the time. I have had this problem since I was a child, anti-depressants helped with that. Also as some other people mentioned birth control pills made me extremely nauseated. I don't take a lot of medication because my stomach is so sensitive. Just mentioning these in case they fit your reasons for being nauseated. Good Luck and I hope you get better.

Have you had your iron levels checked? Are you anemic? Sometimes iron-deficiency anemia shows up as nausea. Try spinach salads with citrus, more red meat, egg yokes, cooking in iron vessels, Floridix with minerals- from the health food store, etc. I would not recommend an iron supplement-a single one-they are usually too harsh on the system- and you can get constipated when taking them. Do you take a multi vitamin with iron? You need at least 18 mg of iron a day- and more if you bleed heavily. good luck.

This is a little personal but do you have regular bowel movements the human body is suppose to have three bowel movements a day if you dont then the toxins that are not being expelled start to poison the rest of your body. I would recommend a colon cleanse you can google it and do research for yourself. Im doing one right now i started a week ago and i feel better already. Im use one called colonix and it is very easy to do. Hope this helps good luck

Your body may be telling you something. I would be more persistent with your doctor or maybe even going to a different doctor if the one you see now doesn't want to do more. Be your own advocate and ask what the symptoms could possibly be. Maybe in a 3 months span keep a journal of what you eat, drink, or come in to contact with. Also activities you do, so you can find a pattern of what may trigger the nausea. This may help the doctors find a diagnosis. Good luck and hope you start feeling better soon.

You made not have thought of this but this is what I discovered with myself. When I get real nauseated, (when I am not sick or pregnant ;o) I need an adjustment from my chiropractor. I can walk into his office very sick and thinking I need to throw up and then I walk out feeling normal.

It's worth a shot, no side effects...just feeling better ;o)

Let me know if you want his info.

When I had nausea why pregnant etc... I craved egg rolls for the cabbage in them, as apparently the cabbage can help calm a upset stomach. Also I've heard I think it's vitamin B6 or B12 can help with that issue. Peppermint as well... Good Luck trying to figure ou what's wrong, that has got to be unplesant!

I would talk to your pharmacist...see if there is something OTC that he would suggest that you try. I would also be tempted to go to another doctor..if I was nauseated for over a year and my doctor couldnt find the reason and wouldnt prescribe anything to help me I would be looking for another doctor!! You have to be your own advocate...speak up ( in a kind way) and dont let them just push you aside and ignore you!!!
Have you tried a bland diet??? No spicy foods, no fried foods?? Does that help any at all??? Keep a food diary and see if there is a relationship between the nausea and what you have eaten...or what you are doing?? IS it worse at night or when you are lying down??? These are all things the Pharmacist will ask you....to help determine what could be causing it.

Good luck.

I have had this problem off and on for a long time as well. In high school I was sick every morning until about 9-10 and it was definately nothing to do with pregnancy. I just dealt with it then but have learned a lot since then. Cold weather makes it worse for me. For some reason, my body does not like being cold. I have had my gall bladder removed and it is still a problem sometimes. The gall bladder issues usually cause lower back and stomach pains as well as sickness. My gall bladder isssues we all right after pregnancy and pretty sever though so I was probably not a very typical case in that situation. I have also found that sinus congestion causes me more stomach problems which become worse with pregnancy. The post nasal drip collects in my throat and starts to kind of choke me and makes me feel sick to me stomach. Sorry if that is kind of gross. I notice that I don't have as many problems when I take a decongestant. You can't do that all the time of course but you could try it and see if it helps and then talk to your doctors about it if it helps. Good luck figuring it all out. I know how frustrating it can be.

Try EMETROL it works really well for me when I'm nauseous. Check with your doctor if you are diabetic. You can get it a Wal-greens, Dillons & Wal-mart (probly other places to - in the pharmacy). It is an over the counter medication. It tastes like sugar syrup, but do not drink anything after taking it for the greatest effectiveness. My mom (who is diabetic) was told to get a can of peaches in heavy syrup & drink the syrup (again check with your doctor if your diabetic).
Sucking on peppermint candies are also helps!

I hope this helps!
God Bless!

I'm sorry to hear that you have not been feeling well for so long. I am sure it is frustrating to not have a diagnosis for what ails you. You didn't mention if the nausea is associated with any foods, fatty foods can make one nauseous. Fatty foods doesn't always mean deep fried or greasy, but sometimes lesser fat foods can cause stomach problems. Certain foods at certain times of the day may also be a culprit. What you eat the night before can cause you problems the next day. Also, stress could be a factor, in conjunction with foods or by itself.

There is always the possibility of a medical problem your dr didn't consider. You may want to see him/her again or see a specialist. There may not be a quick fix or pill that is going to help you, it may be a combination of things. Hang in there, don't give up. Good luck!

That sounds awful, R.!

Any chance you have some hidden mold in your home? I saw a documentary once on that. Mold hidden behind sheetrock walls that were once wet. Easy to get rid of, though. How do you feel when you are away from your home for a length of time? That is the question I would ask myself.

That must be horrible to be nauseated all of the time. If all medical problems have been ruled out have you tried a chiropractor for an alternative? They have a lot of natural ideas & may be able to help you eliminate the problem. Have you tried the OTC Prilosec of Zantac? Good luck, hope you find the source of the problem!

So sorry that you're feeling crummy for so long! Nausea is awful and so many things can cause it! I would ask for a referral to a GI specialist if you haven't been already. Further studies, like an EGD, ultrasound, upper GI series, even an ERCP or CT might be needed to rule out things like gallbladder disease, and others.
Ask if the labwork checked your pancreatic enzymes, liver enzymes, as well as your sugar level (both high (diabetes or pre-diabetes) and low (hypoglycemia) sugars can cause nausea).
Without more info about triggers/time of day, etc. it's hard to guess what's going on...but for some reason, nausea tends to perpetuate itself (the more it occurs...the more chronic it can become), so sometimes just getting a reprieve for a bit can break the cycle, depending on what is causing it.
I would ask your doc to consider a short trial of Zofran as needed, but just to give you some relief while they try to find out the cause. Chronic nausea is not normal.
A couple questions...(things you want to mention to your doc)
When does it occur? Does eating make it better/worse/no change? Does the type of food make a difference? How often does it happen? (Keep a "nausea diary" to try to pinpoint any triggers like food/stress/etc.) Is it associated with bowel changes (diarrhea, constipation, etc.) or cramping? How long does it last? How severe is it?
Do you eat breakfast each day? Do you take a vitamin? (notorious for nausea) or birth control pills or other medications, even things like Motrin? Does the nausea ever make you vomit? If yes, what comes up? (gross I know).
Ok...so these are some things you want to write down.
In the meantime, ginger tea or ginger ale or even chewing a bit of ginger root can sometimes help. Lemon flavors can also help a bit. Believe it or not, a massage might help too! (I looked up a lot of "alternatives" while I had "all day" morning sickness).
Good luck and keep us updated. Don't give up...you know your body best!

As one person has already suggested - see a chiropractic doctor. They can be amazing when it comes to symptoms like nausea, dizziness, headaches, blurred vision, sinus problems and a host of other things you might not think about. I had been put through extensive testing by "regular" doctors with little or no help but my chiropractor helped immediately. Also, if you are in the Collinsville IL area, Beltline Chiropractic is the place to go. The doctors and entire staff are awesome.

You might have TMJ. If you had an injury to the face or jaw or just plain old grind your teeth at night, you can end up being very nauseous and dizzy. I had an injury to my face, starting getting dizzy all the time and throwing up, it was worse in the morning like you were pregnant and was miserable for nearly 2 years before a doctor figured out what was wrong. He was a osteopathic doc who did manual manipulation of the jaw. Four visits and I was fixed. Some chiropractors will manipulate the jaw too. It is worth checking out. Good luck.
