Any Job Search Tips?

Hi Mamas:
I have been a SAHM for 8 years and am now going to be entering the workforce full time as a single mom. I was wondering if anyone had any job search tips that have worked well for them. In my past life I was a bookkeeper, accounting, officer manager person. I did do some part-time administrative support type work while I've been home. I haven't looked for a job for a really long time so any advice would be great. Agencies, search sites, terrific hiring companies, etc? I don't think I want to do a home based business. I'm not much of a sales person.

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

I'm a WAHM (work at home mom - heh) and I run a resume business where I often work with parents who are returning to work after long absences. The workforce DOES want you! I can write your resume to highlight what you can contribute and you'll have something you can be proud of to show to prospective employers. In addition, as a former agency and corporate recruiter, I provide coaching to help navigate the waters. I'm in Bellevue, WA, but I work with folks all over the world.

Send a message if you'd like more info, I'm here to help.

I know of a program through Bellevue Community College (I believe it's State based...but it's not Work First)that does some pretty hefty scholarships/full-rides for SAHparents who are returning to the workforce. In addition they offer resume classes, etc., etc.

I don't know what your income requirements, or previous education is...but going back to school may be a good option for you. While I was in school there I knew many many newly single parents going through this program. I myself started school when my son was 2 months old, in PART because I actually "made" more money by being in school on regular financial aid then I would have working.

I'd also highly recommend getting professional help with your resume. There are agencies which will help you for free, as well as professionals who also offer this service.

Don't forget to look Craigslist, Seattletimes.com, and individual corporation websites in your job hunt.

Best of Luck! :)

S.,

There is www.monster.com that lets you post your resume online. There is www.jobfox.com that I've only seen ads for on TV that you post your resume online, then job offers start following you around everywhere. :) There is also the Work First office. That has a lot of classes and such, mostly for those on unemployment, but they should be able to help you as well.

Hope this helps,
Melissa
