Hi ladies,
My son (28 month's old) has had a fever for 3 days. Well, this is morning number 3. So far it is at it's highest at 102.7. We've been giving him tylenol/motrin regularly to keep it down but once that's out of his system it climbs right back up again. It started Friday. He woke unusually early, generally whiny and crying to be held. He didn't yet have a fever at this point so I saw no reason to call of my babysitting day. He didn't touch breakfast that day and had a small bought of diarrhea. I received a call from one of my regular kids's mom's saying her little one would not be in that afternoon b/c he was up in the middle of the night vomiting. Then it hit me- my son might have that too as I watched her child the day before. Well later that day my son threw up and began his fever run. Started at 100.3. I called the mom back asking how her son was (and also to know what I might expect next from mine) and she said her son was fine. Back to his normal self. I might add her son is 9 months older than mine.
I wish it had gone the same for my son. He's eaten total since the time this has started half an orange, 3 saltine crackers, a bowl of chicken broth and noodles, some dry cheerios and about a half cup of sliced peaches. He's not thrown up again since Friday afternoon and seems in good spirits once his fever starts to drop with the tylenol/motrin. When it's high he cries he thinks he's going to get sick again and doesn't want to. I know throwing up can be traumatizing to little ones!
Anyone else experience anything similar with their children? Any ideas? I've canceled babysitting for tomorrow and hope to be able to get him into his pediatrician, but thought I check around first!
Thank you,

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of your help!
Well because he still had a fever this morning I called and got an appointment with his pediatrician today. As it turns out he has strep! I was surprised. He never once said his throat hurt him or acted as if it did. I asked him daily if various parts hurt- head, throat, tummy, etc and always got a no. So at least I have answer now! We have a 10 day antibiotic to treat it. And if the fever is still around come Wednesday morning we have to go back for blood work. Hopefully the antibiotic does the trick!
Thanks again!
Have a great day!

From my experiences he could of thrown up due to a high fever and more n likely has a different virus than the other child. My 2yo son had a virus about 4 months ago, just fever nothing else. No running nose ear infection sore throat. Just fever for about 5 days. Sorry to break the bad news. I was too and from the doctors daily. I always thought that fever ment infections, but I guess not in this case. The doc just said to keep fluids and motrin and tylenol as your doing.
I hope I was in a little help. Good luck!

Hi R.,

I encourage you to google the book, "Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child; an A-Z guide to Natural and Conventional Treatments for Infants and Children", by J. Zand et all. You may even be able to read the section on fever.

Fever is the body's immune response to fight off infection and help him get well. Imo, treating a fever with tylenol/motrin tricks the body into thinking it doesn't need to fight anymore. Once the meds wear off, the fever spikes again because the body realizes it still needs to fight the fight. With my children, I keep them hydrated, use a tepid bath and homeopathics if they have a fever. I know it's scary to see our little ones sick but allowing his body to do what it was designed to do is the best thing for him.

I encourage you to let him rest, keep him comfortable, offer fluids or popsicles to keep him hydrated, vitamin C & D are great supplements to aid the healing and homeopathics are safe for children. A natural health store should carry these products or be able to recommend somewhere you can find them.

Hope your little man feels better soon.
Peace,
J.

:( I'm so sorry. We had that nasty bug go through my house our boys did not have it long sounds just like the other child vomiting that night but was fine the next day but hubby and I were soooooo sick with it. I seriously did not eat for an entire week, I have never vomited that violently, had the worst headache I've ever had, it felt like someone was stabbing my insides, and my body hurt even worse then it did when I had the flu years ago. I would not even wish this on my worst enemy. Keep him hydrated. The ER will not do much for him especially if he isn't dehydrated. If he starts showing signs of getting dehydrated take him in. Your pediatrician probably won't do much either stomach bugs can take a week or longer to get completely get over in some kids but I hope he starts feeling better sooner then that :)

There is a virus going around here with those exact symptoms. A friend's son had the fever for 5 days. My husband just had it last weekend. Threw up several times on Friday and then a high fever that finally broke on Sun night with general flu symptoms(achy, headache etc).

Unfortunately, it just sounds like a virus. Your doctor is probably going to tell you that it just has to run its course and as long as your child is still drinking fluids then he will eat when he is ready too. Keep an eye on the fever though. If it lasts for more than a few more days then maybe he also has another infection that he might be able to use antibiotics against.

Is his throat hurting him? Our pediatrician office said they haven't seen much flu this year but they've seen a LOT of strep. You could look and see if his throat looks red or has the tell tale signs of strep.

Since a fever can be the body fighting any kind of infection, so its so hard to say. If you want to avoid the emergency room today - do they have any of those urgent care clinics around you? The ones near me even let you sign in online, so you don't wait for hours.

Sorry your little one is sick.
