My family and I are somewhat new to the area and I am wanting to find a great Dr or Midwife to establish care. Does anyone have a good recommendation? We live in Parkland but I am willing to drive a bit if needed. Please let me know. I would appreciate any help as it sure beats looking in the phone book:)

I had a great experience with all three of my children at the Women's clinic in Tacoma. I had a midwife for all of them. The midwives are just wonderful! Here is the address and phone number: 1812 S. J. St., Suite 120
Tacoma, WA 98405
Phone: ###-###-####

Good luck!

P.S. I also had Peggy Dunlop as my midwife and loved her!

Hi C.,

For a great directory of holistic practitioners in our area check out http://www.southsoundhealers.com There is a great directory there, and any of the people listed in the directory would be happy to make more referrals as well! :) Welcome to the area!

Word of mouth IS so much better, isn't it? I have been going to Pearl Place Women's Center for years now. There are two physicians and a bunch of really great midwives, all of whom are awesome. It's just a quick trip up 16 off of Pearl St and N 21st.

The Pearl Place Midwives in Tacoma are AWESOME. Google search them. I've been with them for GYN for years, and had my OB care with them as well (6 month old daughter). They have 2 OBs on staff who they consult with, as well as folks in the Francsican network (St. Joe's in Tacoma), but you definitely get the midwife approach with them. We had a higher-risk pregnancy and were treated exactly as I wanted to be - as low-intervention as possible with a totally natural approach to childbirth while balancing the extra monitoring they wanted to do. I was planning to deliver at their birth center (the Birthing Inn), but was considered too high risk. They did a great job of providing me with a birth-center approach at the hospital. The midwives are great - they rotate care so you know everyone by the end of your pregnancy. They aren't in South Tacoma, but you can get their easily enough from 16, and I think they're worth it.

Oh, despite the higher risk situation (my daughter had a 2-vessel cord), everything was TOTALLY fine and my daughter is absolutely great. Has been since birth - no complications at all.

Good luck!

We love our pediatrician! His name is Dr. Nicholas Themelis and he is in the Parkland area. You may have even driven past his office before. It is located on Pacific Ave in btween Garfield and 112th. It's a white house and it's called Pacific Pediatrics. The phone number is ###-###-####. They are closed on Tuesdays, but he is an amazing doctor and puts himself on call during the office hours! We have been going to him for over 4 years and we have yet to have any problems. He is slow to give antibiotics and gives the body a chance to heal on its own first. However, he knows when antibiotics are necessary. We love him!! Good luck in your search. If you're looking for a docotr for yourself and your husband, I would highly recommend Dr. Stringfellow with Tacoma Central Internal Medicine. He doesn't do pediatric, but he is a great doctor for the adults in your family. I think he'll start seeing kids when they turn a certain age. His phone number is ###-###-####.

I see Dr. Hitchcock at Tacoma Multicare OBGYN, right by Tacoma General hospital. I switched to her after a bad experience with my last dr. and she's been great. She really takes the time to go over everything with me and explain things. Good luck, I know that can be hard!

I worked with the midwives through Group Health, whom were aweswome. I do have a good friend who is a Dula if you would be interested in that? She lives in Spanaway. I could pass along your info. if you would like, or ask her permission to give you hers if she is accepting new clients.

I don't have a good midwife or doctor in Tacoma but I do know a really good doula if you are looking for one. Her name is Julie Benedetti. Her email adress is ____@____.com. I used her when I delivered at Tacoma General with an OB doctor. With my last son I delivered in Seattle with a nurse midwife that was great.
