Any Experience with Frozen Embryo Transfer?

I am looking for any information from those of you who have gone through a frozen embryo transfer or know someone who has. We had a successful first attempt at in vitro a few years ago and are now hoping for baby #2. We have been trying the "old fashioned way" for several months with no success. We luckily were able to freeze 4 embryos from our prior IVF procedure, so we realize now that using them is becoming much more of a possibility. I know I have heard a frozen embryo transfer has a lower success rate than a fresh IVF one. Do they still place the minimum amount of embryos or do they place more because of the lower success rate? Also, if and when I make an appt with the fertility clinic, will I be required to undergo all of the testing that I needed to do the first time around (HSG, etc.)? What kind of medications/shots am I looking at? I know it is a lot less involved than a full IVF cycle, but any info/advice would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

My friend had a frozen embryo transfer after not getting pregnant with IVF and has twin girls. Like pp said it really depends on the grade of the embryos after the thaw of how many they would put back. I would think you would have to endure all the testing again (maybe not as extensive) since your body can change so much especially after having a baby. You still have to do the medications but I don't think they are as much. Let me email my friend and ask her the specifics and then post again.

Hi Carla,
My very good friend is going through the same thing. Her and her husband succesfully had a baby boy last year via IVF. They attemtpted to have their frozed embryos implanted last winter, but unfortunately didn't take. They implanted her with 3 (I think). She had to go through the same testing and shots and hormone treatment the second time too. I am pleased to say though that they went through the IVF "harvesting" process again and she is now pregnant with her second child via IVF. I hope this helps. I don't know all the details, but I do know she had to go through all of the testing again.

Carla,

I did not use frozen embryos, we actually chose not to go that route because our insurance covered most of the process. I do remember that they said it would depend on the grade of the embryos to determine how many they transferred. If all 4 end up being grade A then they will probably only transfer the minimum amount. If you end up with some that are not as high, they may place more. I also know that my Dr. (Dr. Yeko with the Reproductive Medicine Group) told me that I had the choice to go with less, but not more.

I have two boys - 5 and almost 3 (2 years and 3 months apart) and both of them are from IVF. They are both a dream come true! Good luck to you and your family on your second try. May the outcome be as great as the first time!

Sam
