How Timely! I just got a newsletter from the Safter Pest Control Project and it had some natural tips for controlling ants!

"ANTS: AN IPM PRIMER

Ants are a common pest in many kitchens, and they appear magically each spring. You can more effectively get rid of these tiny bugs without spraying pesticides. While spraying takes care of the ants you see, your ant problem will not go away unless you stop ants from getting into your home or destroy their nests.

Simple Steps to Get Rid of Ants:
• Figure out where they are coming from by following the trail until it ends.
• If it ends up at a crack in your foundation or wall, seal it with caulk.
• Mix liquid soap and water in a spray bottle, and spray the path of the ants. This will cover up the scents they use to follow each other into your home.
• Remove any visible nests around the perimeter of your home by pouring boiling water over them.
• Clean up any food spills quickly. Simply keeping your home clean and putting food in sealed containers will reduce ant problems.

All of these simple techniques will not only get rid of your ant problem, but will also prevent them in the future.

Hope that helps!

I just heard corn meal will work, but it takes about a week. I also second the vinegar spray for outside. Good luck!

Hello,
You can use dish washing liquid which will cover up their chemical trail. Borax is also safe and green.

Hello,

I use vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray it all around the exterior doors where you believe they are entering. I also clean the counter, sink, and spray it in the trash. Seems to keep them away. Hope this helps.

I tried everything that has been mention and none of it worked for us. I only clean with vingar, so would think ants wouldn't be a problem. We found if you put the ant traps outside around your house it takes care of the problem. They have traps that have spikes so you can stick them into the ground behind your bushes and plants.

JB,

My kid is always snacking and spilling stuff on the floors so we had an ant problem too. I do the Swifter and or vacuum to get the crumbs every night. Also you have to figure out their trail. When you do, put Bounce sheets in these areas. It has to be original scent Bounce. For some reason, ants hate that smell. It worked for us. Also we planted mint along the outside of our house. Ants hate mint.
