Another Food Storage Question - Is It Still Good?

So we get the sliced fruit (pears, peaches) in light syrup from Target Super Store - they're in plastic containers. It doesn't say anything other than "refrigerate after opening".

They look fine (nothing growing or discolored), no smell, but it's been several weeks since they were opened. My fridge is pretty darn cold, and I hate to waste food, but I don't want to take chances.

What's the best way to know refrigerator shelf life?

If they have been opened and its been several days toss them. those things are cheap but a doctors apt is not. not worth chancing it. If they were opened and used the next day or even 2 days probably fine but weeks is just not worth chancing

if they didn't have any mold in the container and didn't smell funny or weren't mushy i would eat them. treat them like applesauce

Go to http://www.stilltasty.com/ and it will tell you. I'd say if you already opened it and it's been weeks, you probably need to throw it, but this website not only tells you how long, it usually has a why with it so you can still make your own choice.

Open the lid. Is the clear flexible seal bubbling or taught? If it looks normal, they are most likely fine. If it is expanded, or if the fruit has an off taste/smell throw it out. If it does look fine, eat it in one day then toss it.

Generally speaking, in a professional kitchen, most things are not kept after 4 days - some as little as 1 day or a few hours depending on the food item. Some things can make it a week. As long as the food has been outside of the temperature danger zone (41-135 degrees) it is safer longer. If something hasn't been clearly marked with the date/time it was opened and an expiration or "Use By" date, personally, I follow the "When it doubt...Throw it out" philosophy.
