Another Baby Name Poll ;) - New Baden,IL

Okay so we have narrowed down our list of baby names....would like your advice (good and bad!).

Our daughter will be 6 when the baby is born - her name is Ashley.
Our son will be 4 when the baby is born - his name is Elias.

Boy Names: Oliver, Austin, Tanner
Girl Names: Ella or Olivia

I have tried yelling first, middle and last name of each, saying all three kids names together and writing each name with our last name. I have reasons for liking all of them! The girls names are both in the top 10 this year...but I do not know anyone in the last 10 year personally who have named their girls either of those names....the boys are not in the top 10.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Didn't think to let you all know the middle name!

Michael for a boy
Ryan for a girl

Thanks so much for all your input!! We choose middle names based off family and have used all males so far (my daughter's middle name is Ray after her great grandfathers) and my son's middle name is Christopher after his dad. Ryan is my brother's name and Michael is hubby's father's name. Just thought I would clarify since they ARE masculine middle names even for a girl!

for the boy name, I really like Oliver. It's not very popular and it's just a really nice name. I do not like Tanner, sorry. I was friends with someone with a son named Tanner and he was such a winey spoiled cry baby. Anytime I hear that name I think of him. Sorry.

For the girl name: I LOVE both names! My SiL is pregnant with a girl and her top choice is Ella. I do know a few Ella's, but not so much that it's over done. Beautiful name :) Olivia is great too! I haven't heard anyone with that name since I was about 5 and I'm 32. I love both!

I looove the name Oliver. Wish I'd named my son this -- it would've suited him.

I'd also recommend Olivia for a girl.

With Austin, he and Ashley would have to "share" the letter A, leaving Elias as the only E. That can cause all kinds of friction with young siblings.

You don't have the letter problem with Tanner; I just think Oliver is a much nicer name.

And Elias and Ella are much too similar, IMO.

I personally would do Olivia or Oliver so each kid has their own initials, and tanner just doesn't fit the vowel theme ;) but they're all cute names! My daughter is Olivia and I wish I'd given her something slightly less popular but it was my childhood favorite.

Of the boys names, I think Tanner goes best with your other kids' names.

Of the girls names, I think you should go with Olivia. Ella is too similar to Elias.

There have been a ton of Ellas and Olivias in our daughter's classes. Not necessarily a bad thing, but just be prepared that she'll be known as Ella or Olivia M. (or whatever your last name is), so try pronouncing both names that way to see if it matters as far as sound.

With the boy names, I like Oliver, because it's a more classic name. The name Tanner makes me think of someone who works with animal hides.

I love Oliver and Ella. I like Olivia, too, and know many people who named their girls Olivia, but Ella just rolls off the tongue, whereas O-liv-i-a is four syllables :)

I would use Oliver over the other two boy names, which are trendy and dated. Oliver is much more classic and feels much more masculine.

I like both Ella and Olivia, but Olivia is so common that it's become kind of boring. Don't get me wrong... I love the name, but I feel like it's on burnout. Ella is sweet and charming but I think it works much better as a nickname for the more elegant Elisabeth or Eleanor/Elinor/Eleanora. If you elaborated on a full name for Ella it would also give a daughter more options for nicknames later on, or give her the option for something less nicknamey-sounding and twee.

I know you didn't ask, but I would keep in mind that Ryan (from the Irish RÍAN) is a purely masculine name that means "little king." There's no feminizing it. There's the lovely Rhiannon, however, which is Welsh for "great queen."

For the girl, definitely Olivia. Ella and Elias are just too similar. And, Ella Ryan doesn't sound as good as Olivia Ryan (though, I still think of Ryan as a boy's name...)

For the boy, I'd go with Oliver or Austin. Probably Austin. Tanner sounds like a last name, not a first name and it doesn't flow that well with Michael.

I love Austin
I personally know many Ella's only 1 Olivia. Plus Ella is very close to Elias. So I pick Olivia for a girl. Plus is sounds really pretty with Ryan.

Hopefully, I do not offend, as this is not my intention. However, Olivia sounds to me like a piggy. I read a book to one of my kids and the main character was a pig named Olivia. I do like Ella - it's pretty and elegant.

As for the boy names, well, I've never met an Oliver in my lifetime. One of my best friend's named her son Austin - smart, funny and boisterous child. I've always liked the name Tanner - again, never met one, but I like the name! :)

It would be interesting to know the middle names you have planned so we can put them together, as well.

Congrats and good luck!!

What you and hubby like are all that matter in the end...you will be dealing with the name forever more. Since you asked...

I don't care for those names but of the 3 boy names I prefer Austin and I like Olivia better than Ella.

I personally like Matthew James or Matthew Charles for a boy or Cheyenne Nicole or Kiera Nicole. The only reason my son is Michael Andrew is because his dad (my ex) decided he wanted a junior (after telling me to pick a name because he didn't want a junior) but the name does fit him. The only reason my daughter isn't Cheyenne Nicole is because my hubby was being difficult and we compromised (since he compromised on not having a jr if we had a boy, I had to compromise on the girl name).

Other names that I like but are less of a personal choice for me are: Callen and Hannah (which are not your every day but still normal names and would go nicely with your other children's normal but different names.

I never went by the top 10 list (you are either naming your kid what everyone else is naming their's or you are not picking a name just so you don't...either way someone else is guiding your choice but they don't have to live with your choice).

I like Tanner the best. Very distinguished.

Tanner is very trendy and not very strong sounding. I think Austin is cool and Ella is pretty. A lot will depend on the middle name. When my daughter is in trouble, I use both her first and middle name. They've got to go well together! :) Good luck!

Great choices! You can't go wrong.

Preference: Olivia/Oliver - so sweet, and yet, the names mature with the child.

I like Oliver or Olivia. The reason is you can yell that in a crowd and not everyone is goign to turn around. The other two boys names and you will and I agre with Everley Ella is so close to Elias.

Girl: Olivia, hands down! (That is my daughter's name and she IS 10); I didn't know anyone with that name either...I've heard it a handful of times since.
