We just started looking into angel food ministries. Does anyone know of anything that is like them but different (offers different foods)? I know there is Great food for all but they don't have a host site near us. I'm just trying to see what our options are for reducing food costs. Thanks in advance.

Update: We are not low income. Angel food Ministries does have a site near us. I was just wondering if there was other food pragrams like them---like Great food for all is another type of program like Angel food ministries but Great food for all isn't areound us. Thanks.

What can I do next?

We use Angel Food, also.... it has been a great help for the food budget!

Anyway, someone once posted on Facebook that Angel Food would ship you the food if you didn't live near a host site. I don't know where to find this out, or what their shipping parameters are, but it might be worth writing to Angel Food directly and find out.

Good luck!

Hi Brenda. Some things I have done since being laid off to help my food bill have included 1) buying more store brands. I used to think substandard or not as good, but found out from a friend who used to work at Lays that the store brands are really them and other brands under the store brand label. This saves me a lot of money. Other things to do: 2) buy the meat that has been reduced (I go about every other day and pick up some meat from the 30-40% section). The meat is fine and I don't stock up but cook within day or two. 3) look for the specials in the Wed flyers 4) plan your meals around the specials 5) coupons 6) have a list and stick to it (my hardest as I am a impulse grocery buyer). I have known people who do the grocery game also and same tons of money and it is very cheap to do.

I was once told about WIC which now uses debit cards so there is no embarrassment at the store. I used to live in a city with a local food bank that sells food, diapers, formula, etc... for 17 cents per pound. There was a form to fill out to qualify but the nurse thought we would based on income. Also, several churches had food closets and would allow people to come. Again, you had to fill out forms to prevent fraud. Some cities were giving out debit cards to be used only at the Farmer's Market for produce.

I am not going to assume you are low income, just someone trying to cut costs like you stated. That is wise in today's economy. In ANY economy, really! Why pay more when you don't have to?!

((Just FYI: WIC is only for low income Women, Infants, and Children to age 5 and you receive monthly food 'checks' for specific items, not a debit card. The debit card (SNAP) is for food stamps, and is also income-based. ANYONE can get Angel Foods, not just people with low income.))

Do you belong to a church? If you are interested in Angel Food Ministries, then why not see if they will become a host site? Maybe you could be the contact person. Their website has the details and forms for this.

Wait....I just went to the website and there are 18 host sites in Houston, plus 46 more within 50 miles of Houston. Could one possibly be in a town close to you? Check here: http://bit.ly/9aF32c :)

The easiest way to save money is to avoid prepared meals. It takes more time, but if you prepare several meals at a time or make larger meals so there are leftovers, it is so much cheaper.

With recipes available online, you can put in what ingredients you like and you can find hundreds of recipes. For example, I had some chicken leftover and I found a chicken tortilla soup that was to die for. So cheap and very tasty.

For example, google "easy chicken and tortilla recipe." You can freeze extra soup in freezer ziploc bags and they fit so easily in the freezer. Just be sure to mark the bag.
