I am a custom designer in Benicia, I deal with people all the time who have ideas and want to make them a reality. First find a designer who can make a prototype and a pattern for the bag. Have them sign a disclosure that prevents them from stealing the idea and it protects you as the inventor. Then take the idea, prototype and pattern to a manufacturer and have it produced. If you want to keep it small in boutiques, you can have a seamstress produce some and you can take them to boutiques and see if they will sell them for you. Benicia has many of those kind of shops that will sell items like that. Any town usually does. You can also get a booth at local fairs, or farmers markets and sell them in various fabrics.
If you are interested in having me do it, call me and set up an appointment at my studio. Hercules is not far from Benicia. Usually any custom designer should be able to do this.
Good luck and hope you get it going.

The patent is a good idea.
After that, depending on the material you want it made from, you can get a seamstress to make one from your design and then show it to some small shops or take photos and offer it online. If you need to explain features but you want to sell it online, have a digital recording made of you showing and explaining the bag ( I have seen a website video like this for a laptop bag).
You could also start out having a party at your house showing it to friends and neighbors and they can recommend it to their other friends if they like it.
There is a website called "etsy.com" that is for people offering handmade goods (although it is maybe sewn by machine, it is not mass produced so it may qualify still).

You may just want to apply for a provisional patent first, that way your idea is protected before you have an actual prototype. You may or may not want to go all the way and get an actual patent. Sometimes because there are so many knock-offs of patented products anyway and going after the offenders is time consuming and costly, it's easier to be the first one out on the market and build your brand rather than spend the time and money to go through the patent process. Just a thought. I have a website with more information on developing your idea and stories of moms who have made millions with their ideas. The website is www.lavellej-momguide.com

First thing to do is get a patent on it. I'm not sure, but I think you only need a design to get the patent, not an actual finished product.

No clue what to do next, but at least with the patent you'll be protected.

Ha ha. I was just about to type everything Steph C. did. I would get a patent first. Sorry I can't help beyond that. Good luck.
