I am four months along with baby #3. I am a medium/large build and am 5ft 8in. I stepped on the scale this morning to find out I have went from 137 lb (pre-pregnancy weight) to 170 in four months! WOW! The last two babies I gained only about 40 lbs with the whole 9 months. I can only imagine what I will gain this time. I am going to ask my midwife this appointment next week, but last month was my very first appointment and she didn't act like anything was abnormal.

What can I do next?

Hi there, I gained 63 lbs with my 1st and 73 with my second. I gained all my weight up front. I have taken most of it off and my yougest is 8 months old. As long as you are healthy and the baby is too I would not worry.

I just wanted to add. I read some comments that said its ok to gain a ton of weight. Of course it is normal to gain weight during pregnancy, especially if thats been normal throughout your other pregnancies.. but I have read that gaining too much weight during a pregnancy increases the chances of your child having allergies. So as long as your eating healthy and don't gain weight dramatically then you and your baby should be fine. Just mention it to your OBGYN. Good luck!

Everyone gains (or loses) pregnancy weight differently. With my first, I gained all my weight in the first few months - went up 40 lbs in the first 6 months. But in my last trimester, when the "experts" say you should gain about 1 pound per week, I only gained 5 the last 3 months. With my second baby, I gained 25 pounds evenly over the entire pregnancy. Everyone, and each pregnancy, is different.

Well, considering that I am 5'8 and weigh 170 lbs now and I am not pregnant- means I don't feel bad for you LOL!
But for me, I gained all my pregnancy lbs up front and then didn't gain anymore during the prehnancy. When your baby begins to get bigger it puts pressure on your stomach and you can't eat as much so I actuallt platowed in weight @5-6 months.

Hopie,

Stop getting on the scale. It doesn't matter what you weigh, as long as you are healthy and the baby is getting what he needs. You will lose your figure, it just happens.. but what is more important, having healthy children or your vanity? For those who have had just one baby, vanity is still in the running, no matter what anyone says. I know moms who's vanity has stopped them for trying for a second or third. I know beauty makes the world go round, but you have to decide what is more important, a small little figure or a healthy baby.

I've had 7 pregnancies, in 8 years, resulting in 5 wonderful children. (We started late, and wanted a large family) Each pregnancy I would gain more than the last. I am 5ft 3in, and the last one I was over 200 lbs at the end. YES, it bothered me a little bit, the DR said I was very healthy with no ges. diabetes or any problems.... and now I have 5 HEALTHY children.

There is a time for watching pound by pound with your weight, but pregnancy isn't one of those. Enjoy it, only a few of us are lucky enough to experience it more than one-twice in a lifetime!

Again get rid of the scale! The DR/midwife has a scale, and you see her once a month right? And there are simple test for gestational diabetes, so don't let anything anyone says on here scare you.

I am sure you are an active mom, you will have no trouble losing it after the pregnancy. Remember Breastfeeding (for at least 6-8 months) is mother nature's natural slimming secret!

oh, I am 39, our youngest just turned 3, and my figure is perfect now!
Good luck and congrats on #3

I am a firm believer in letting mother nature take her course. If you are eating right, your body will take what it needs. Starving yourself won't change that. I am 6' tall and started out at 160 lbs, and with baby #1 I gained 75 pounds. Yes, 75 pounds! And that was after hardly gaining anything the first 6 months! (I could still zip my regular pants at 5 months, no joke.) By the end of that pregnancy, I looked like the Goodyear blimp, it was absurd. Thankfully most of it was water and I had dropped 35 pounds of it prior to leaving the hospital after delivery. But I still had to lose 40 pounds. Thankfully it came off pretty easily that time.

Ok, so I was prepared for that same scenario with baby #2, and ended up starting to gain weight pretty much the minute the little blue line showed up on the pregnancy test! (Oh no!) But I ended up gaining only 35 pounds total during that pregnancy. Go figure. But it was so much harder to lose that 35 pounds than it had been to lose the 75 pounds I gained with the first one! I'm at a loss to explain any of it.

So... every pregnancy is different, and the weight you're gaining may just be water, or maybe it's real weight, but your body seems to need it. Just make sure you're eating as healthy of foods as you can so you're getting the right nutrients, and let your body do whatever it will.

Congrats on your pregnancy!

maybe not all of that is actual weight....maybe it's water retention? i went up 25 lbs quick just from it being summer and retained a bunch of water, but i'm almost done (36 wks)....

If your midwife is anything like mine, she will definitely be bringing it up if she sees it as a problem. Since you are so tall, and last month was your first appointment, she may not have noticed that you gained. It is good to mention it.

Since this is number 3 for you, remember that your risk for gestational diabetes increases. Depending on your age, of course, you could be at risk for other complications. Take a good luck at your diet and make sure you are making the best choices possible.

I hear that every pregnancy is different. I have only carried one to term, but even noticed differences in the pregnancies before I miscarried.
