Alternative to Mederma Scar Creme?

About a month ago I had minor abdominal surgery. I started using Mederma scar creme last week and within 2 days broke out in a red, itchy, blistery rash. Doc told me to take Benadryl and use cortizone creme...may take a week to clear up. Any suggestions on an alternative to Mederma to help reduce scars? Am wondering if maybe I am alergic to a drug used during surgery...2 weeks after having a c-section (several years ago) I broke out in a similar rash on my legs - same treatment was used. Thanks in advance for your help!

Try Vitamin E oil. It was fantastic for me. I used it faithfully after my hysterectomy and you can hardly see my bikini line scar now. I also had 2 minor office procedures done last summer and the Dr. told me to use Vitamin E oil.

Also, make sure the scar stays out of the sun or has heavy sunscreen on it.

Good luck

Shaklee C&E Repair helped me with scars ranging from a raging case of Poison Ivy to breast surgery scars. You can't even tell I once had scars. My husband used it after surgery on his chest, he has problems with keloid (overgrowth) scar tissue, the C&E Repair helped when the cortisone shots did not.

My son just had surgery to remove a birthmark last month. They told us to put zinc oxide on it. I honestly don't know if those ointments work on reducing the scar. The doc was mostly concerned with sun exposure, which wouldn't be a problem with your scar. I've heard vitamin E capsules are good - rubbing the gel on the scar, but that's just an "old wives tale" an dI don't know if it's actually true.

Hello H.,

I have a botanically based skin care, health and wellness company.

We have a couple products that work wonderfully to reduce the appearance of scars. We have a skin conditioning oil and a rejuvenating cream which are pretty inexpensive. We also, have a body care system (body serum and body lotion) that is awesome!

Our products are botanically based, ph correct, dermatologist tested, never tested on animals, has no animal products or by-products, hypoallergenic, and contains no mineral oil. So they are much healthier for you then a lot of other products.

Feel free to check out my website at www.atterberrynation.myarbonne.com.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Take care and God bless!

I've been told by several different MDs to use Vitamin E Oil on the incision site/scar. Hopefully you won't be allergic.

Blessings,

Hello! I had my thyroid removed in January, and my Doctor also recomended Mederma. It also iritates me. It gets red and starts itching. So now I just try to use it once a day, and I use very little and make sure I only get it on the scar and not all over the skin. It seems to be a little better.

I work for a board certified plastic surgeon (www.DrMichaelBogdan.com).

Mederma or Scar Guard is what he recommends to his patients. Vitamin E Oil is also an alternative that is less expensive. If you have a reaction to one, then discontinue use, and try another kind.

Scars that are pink are still healing, so using sunscreen is also VERY important. Scars turn white when they have finished healing.

Wishing you a smooth recovery! :)
