Hi Folks,

Any advice for dealing with smell sensitivity? I seem to be just about past the morning sickness but smells still really bother me. From what I have read it could be a problem until the baby is born!! Have any of you had to deal with this and if yes what did you do to make it more bearable?

Oh the smells that bother me are cooking smells - oils or fats from meats. I can't say that they make me nauseous, because they really don't anymore Now they just make me nuts... I can not stand how my house smells... I even had the windows open for the last 2 days but I still smell cooking smells. My husband of course does not smell anything. I have been doing a lot of grilling which is okay, no smell in the house. And at night I keep a papertowel with some scent on it near my bed. I can't scent the whole house because my husband is allergic.

So any thoughts, suggestions etc, would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great answers!

Since it bothers me most at night, I put perfume on a bandana and keep it by my pillow. It is not srong enough to bother my husbands allergeries, but works to keep the "smells" away.

Thanks again!

I was the same way, too!! Mine started to die down around 17 weeks. Everything from the way the bathroom drain smelled (and no one else could smell it reguardless of how much I tried to clean it out, I still would smell it) to a restraunt a far way away. Potatos were my enemy. maybe try a tart but dont' light it so it won't be too strong? For me, nothing worked, my house smelled horrible, even going from one room to the next made me nearly puke. The only thing that helped was time..once morning sickenss went down, so did the hypersalavation (excess saliva production) and the smell sensitivity. I hope you feel better soon!!

Does the smell of oranges bother you? This was one smell that I loved while pregnant.

Make a special cleaner (it's completely safe, don't worry). Take a big canning jar and fill it with orange peels. Don't stuff them in. Then fill the jar with white vinegar. Close and leave it for a week or so.

This is your cleaning concentrate. Fill a spray bottle 3/4 of the way with tap water and add your concentrate to it. Clean your whole house with it, concentrating on the "bad smell areas." The vinegar will clean everything and cut the smell, and the orange scent will be left behind.

Best of luck!

My nose goes into like...overdrive during pregnancy. I find a couple candles I like and use those. I'm grateful that the weather has been warming up - I do keep the windows open a lot for fresh air. On the positive side...it definitely helps me keep the house (especially the kitchen) nice and sparkly clean!

I can't help you with this - only sympathize. I remember having to change deodorant because I couldn't stand the smell of MYSELF. We'd be in bed at night and I couldn't believe my husband couldn't smell my armpits because I sure could! He swore up and down that he couldn't, but I still changed deodorant any way.

I was the same way! It's terrible! You could put out bowls of coffee beans and keep them close by you in the house . Sounds weird, but they smell good & usually overpower most smells. Spray Febreeze if you can, or if not, mix a solution of baking soda & water to use as a 'Febreeze' type spray. Also, get some house plants that are good for filtering the air. Here's a link:

Hope it gets better for you!

Oh the joys of pregnancy! yes, I had smell sensitivity with all 4 of my babies. Lasted throughout the pregnancy, though some days were better than others. Every woman is different so what works for me, may not work for you. But, you just try different things and hope it helps. Try to use unscented things. I know, this is very difficult because everything has a scent and for the pregnant woman who is sensitive to smells, she can smell things that most people cannot detect! For example, while I was pregnant with our last child, who will be 1 at the end of this month, our cat was sick in my early pregnancy. I told my husband, 1 week before he died (and I didn't know he was going to die until we put him to sleep) that I smelled something really bad in the house. I cleaned everything I could think of: under the stove, under the refrigerator, the garbage pails...everything. I couldn't get rid of this horrid smell! My husband asked me what it smelled like and the only thing I could think to say was that it smelled like death...and I have no idea what "death" smells like except that what I was smelling, smelled horrible. But the funny thing about it was that I was the only one who could smell it! My other 3 children could not smell anything, nor could my husband. A week later, our cat was put to sleep due to kidney failure and he ended up having a seizure on the day we took him to the vet for a check up.

Other smells that bothered me were my shampoo and conditioner and body wash. Oh my goodness, I dreaded taking a shower just because of the smells. I ended up using a lightly scented body wash, which still smelled horribly strong to me but for the shampoo and conditioner I found that mint scented soap seemed to keep my nausea at bay. At least in the shower. Brushing my teeth gagged me each and every time! The smell of coffee, chicken, and cleaning products like soap detergent and Bounce put me over the edge. Just try to switch to unscented things for the time being. Once I had the baby, the sensitivity was gone!

For me, the cooking-meat smell sensitivity lasted the duration. Sorry. I think continuing to grill outside is your best bet.Your husband can't understand wht you are experiencing, but at least he can be sensitive to your needs.

I had the same problem and it lasted the entire pregnancy and some smells still bother me. There is a certain shampoo I was using with my first pregnancy that I can no longer tolerate along with scented hand soap. Sorry I don't have any suggestions, just empathy. : (
