Has any parents gotten them for there kids? I just found out today that my son is allergic to cats and dogs and he is a candidate for them. I was wondering if they are worth the trips to the doctor? Or would I be better off to try everything else before trying those?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi everyone, thanks for your words of wisdom. I think I will keep him on the nasonex for now and see how things go after a few years. His allergies are the runny nose kind, which he has all year round. I think that if he was more allergic I would be more apt to get them. My husband still refuses to believe that he's allergic to our animals (don't u love men lol) He doesn't see how he can be allergic to something he's lived with his whole life. Anyways, thanks!!

I use to get allergy shots (as an adult). I had so many allergies that I was miserable. And I feel they worked. I am not 100% allergy free. I'd say I am about 85% better than I was. But, I did end my section early because I moved out of the area and never started back with it.

So, I feel the shots were worth it.

One thing I am allergic to is cats. My entire life I've had a cat. I have one now and next week we are getting a new kitten. It will take me about 2 weeks to build up my immunity to it. And it helps to wash my hands after I pet them.

You can also talk to your Vet about a med. that you put in your cats water or food that helps people’s allergies to them.

I say if your son is miserable - get them.

Have you ever thought of taking your son to see a Naturalist Dr.? Taking those allergy shot and zyrtec (or any other kind of allergy meds or any sort of pharm. meds.) are extreemly unhealthy.
The allergy shots are only going to cover up the syptoms your son has...they will still be there, he just wont notice them.
There are many different herbal medications that your son can take for allergies, that will actually get to the root of the problem.
Does your son have a good diet? There are certain foods he can eat to help build his immune system as well.
I suffer from many different allergies and I myself went to see a specialist and even considered taking the shots...my mind was quickly changed after seeing a naturalist and a great chiropractor who have set me on a healthier track...and I feel SO MUCH better then I did when I was on Clartin and other meds.
Whatever you choose to do, I hope your son feels better!

Hi A.-
I totally disagree with the other two ladies. I get shots once a week. My son has yet to show any signs of any reaction so we havent givin him shots. But I do get them and yes they are a big pain in the butt to do every week for about 30-45 mins but in the long run its well worth it. I have allergic reation to cats, mold, dust and pollon. But when I am on the shots it help so much. I sugguest you try it and see what the out come is, and if you feel that your son is not doing any better on the shots you can quit going. Good luck

Hi A.~
That's a tough one b/c some ppl swear they work, but others swear they don't. I am among the latter group. I really don't think they work, as I have not been involved w/any patients who actually had success. They seemed to be more trouble than they are worth. My personal opinion is that I wouldn't get them for my kids. That said, I have no knowledge of just how allergic your son is. If he is miserable and you have tried all other options to no avail, then it may be your next logical step. If it's just an inconvenience that he is allergic now and then, I'd skip it and treat it on an as needed basis. My husband and I are deathly allergic to cats...we're talking severe reaction...and neither of us has had to make any big changes in our lives except avoiding touching cats. Good luck to you and your son!

I would not have a cat and dog first. Sorry but if a family member is miserable I would not have one in the house. Second I am into natural health. Accupunture can help with allergies like that and I know someone using it for her child. It is a reasonable fee usually. Or see a chiropractor or naturalist doctor. Read Natural Cures by Kevin Trudeau. It will benefit your family. Pam R

I would go w/ the allergy shots. My daughter has alot of allergies & its so frustrating for her to keep trying the meds. plus they will work for a few things but not all. I would love for her to get the shots just so she wouldnt have to try every meds thats out there. It stinks. Hoep that helps. Good luck.

That truly depends on how strong the allergy is for the child. My daughter is allergic to dogs/cats also. She kept getting hives is all. With the help of Claritin 2-3 x a week, it keeps her allergies in check. She doesn't have the outbreaks anymore. However, I would check with your allergist!

A.,
My 8 yo son and husband have been getting allergy shots for 1 year now, however they are allergic to everything outdoors (trees, grasses, pollen, and cats). They tested so severley allergic that they had to go once a week for 10 months. We saw a considerable change in their quality of life. Now they are down to once every 3-4 weeks and it does seem to be helping. They also take Zyrtec along with the shots on days they react more (like the summer months). I guess if your son is allergic to animals and you have them in your home, it would probably make him feel much better and would be worth it.

Hope this helps.

If you havent tried all other options, I would not go directly to shots...The shots are actually whatever he is allergic to in an attempt to build ammunity towards the allergy.... So if u can fight it off more power to ya Of course if nothing works... shots it is...
good luck
