I have really bad allergies to dust mites and we have to clean and vacuume every week. We bought a shark infinity nv30 2years ago and it no longer works. The hose part does work well but when its upright it just doesn't suck at all. We paid like 200 at target with a gift card we had gotten and not sure if it can be fixed.
My dh will be taking it in to see if it can be fixed but in the meantime I need to do my homework on them.
This is our first vacuume so we really don't have much knowledge about them.
Our whole house is carpeting so we need a good one, that will last a long time.
Can you please recommend a good brand and model that will last a long time but most importantly be good for someone like me who has allergies. Someone mentioned something with Hepa, I have a hepa air cleaner but didn't know vacuume cleaners have them too.
Can someone explain that to me as well? Thanks for any advice and recommendations.
I also have a Kirby. You may want to look online as the prices are very good for a vaccuum or any accessories that you may want. We also got a discount by giving them our old vaccuum. Negotiate with them, its a pain but well worth it. We paid $700 for ours 5 years ago and a friend paid $2,000!!!!!!! It's a great vaccuum & it has been very good. If you have allergies its best to get a vaccuum that uses bags.
In the last 10 years, I have owned and parted with three vacuums - Sharp, Hoover windtunnel w/ bag (best out of the three) and Hoover Windtunnel w/out bag (the WORST out of the three - it just fell apart and lost suction in the very short time that it took to vacuum my home.) I have bad allergies and a good vacuum is important to me.
In October, I finally agreed to having the Kirby people come and show me a vacuum and give me the two room shampoo/demonstration. My husband and I decided that the Kirby was the one for us (minus the shampooer - I have a shampooer, didn't need that feature). I did, however, need a longer hose to do all of my stairs. A Kirby vacuum is rather heavy (around 25 lbs. but it has two motors and is pretty sturdy. You also have to detach and attach certain accessories before you vacuum stairs. Seemed a little cumbersome at first but I got used to it.
The bags that it comes with are heavy-duty filtered bags made to limit the amount of allergens in your home. Upon the first vacuuming - I could tell it made a huge difference in seeing the dust (or lack of.... ) float through the air!
For the cost of the three vacuums, I could have had a Kirby. My neighbor just brought her Kirby in for a "tune up" and says that it works as good as the first day she bought it. Hers is 9 years old. I love it!!!!! I'm hoping it's the last vacuum that I ever have to buy. There is some wiggle room in the price and they always have financing options. They also have a "pay by cash/check option" for an additional percentage off. We took advantage of that. I'm hoping it's the last vacuum that I'll ever buy.

EDIT: The previous post said that, at the time, the Kirby was a hard sell. For me, it was "semi-hard". The man was a little put- out, at first, that he "had to shampoo both my rooms WITHOUT a firm commitment." This attitude almost lost him the sale. I told him that wasn't part of our agreement - I agreed to see his presentation, open-mindedly, in exchange for him shampooing my 2 rooms. He did back off and even suggested that he "leave the vacuum overnight" so that I could really get the feel for it. And.... yes.... that's when I fell in love! I thought the shampooing feature seemed like a lot of work.
Hi Lisa, your going to pay for it but a Rainbow vacuum is about the only one that will really do a good job for that. They are pretty expensive, but they have no filters to kick particles back into the air, they use water in place of a filter. Also what type of products are you using in the house, especially with a child, these can be very h*** o* the respiratory system. You would be amazed just by changing what you use in your home to the health benefits.

I've had my Kirby for 20 years this spring. It still works like new. (I've taken it in for a cleaning and tune-up now and then, but it was well worth the $700 I paid for it in 1989.) I don't know what they cost now, but I do know you can negotiate the price. They can be kind of hard sell, and that's the part I don't like about their company. Their vacuums are so good, they should just let them sell themselves! Good luck on your search.
Check out SEBO, it's German made. We bought one last year for $850. It's hospital grade. It has a hepa filter like other vacuums, but another hepa filter on the exhaust (the air leaving the vacuum). We bought it b/c we thought we had bad allergies, but it turns out we don't. I would at least add this to your list to research.
I have a dust mite allergy and I use a Hoover Windtunnel with bag. Definitely get one with a bag because the bagless ones just release all the dust back into the air!
I also wear a mask when I change the bag. My vacuum has a HEPA filter and that definitely helps as well. I've had it seven years and it works great!
i have a Dyson and I LOVE IT! It has the Asthma and Allergy Foundation stamp of approval. My kids all have TERRIBLE Asthma and their allergist suggested the Dyson. It has a hepa.
