My 5 yr old is allergic to alot of trees, grass, pollen, mold, ect. The only thing that has really happened in the past is the sneezing, breathing iritations, and some small facial swellening. Sunday evening and Monday evening she developed a lot of slightly raised rash looking patches all over her arms, legs and bottom. Sunday she did not complain about any itching but Monday she did. I have given her some allergy medicine after each has happened. Sunday night by the time she went to bed it was almost completely gone. The only different things she ate were a different brand of salami Sunday and our detergent I use is Gain which switched to being concentrated. She doesnt have any spots on her tummy or back. Could this reaction be from the pollen in the air or something else? She has a doctors appointment later today. Im just loosing sleep trying to think whats causing this.
If it was from the detergent wouldn't she have the rash on her tummy and back too?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Our 3rd night and she did not have any hives. The pediatrician said it is probably just a virus and the hives are how her body reacted to it. If it would have been food allergies she would have had a reaction after an hour of eating and if it was the detergent it would be on her stomach and back too. So we have 1-2 weeks that the hives can keep coming back. :S

My daughter has allergies too and I had to start using free and clear laundry detergents. You may want to try it for a while to see if that helps. Also you want to switch the soap she when taking a bath. We use baby Aveeno, even though my daughter is 4. If she plays in the grass the rash could be from that. I am allergic to something in the grass but I can't remember what its called. I don't spend a lot of time in the grass because I will itch and have raised bumps. Good luck!!

I've seen virus's present themselves that way. My kids are very sensitive to laundry detergents and Gain is a big trigger for us. The irritation was worse once they started scratching. We use Claritin Redi tabs half a dissolvable tab, it seems to help. Try running an extra rinse cycle on your clothes and cutting detergent amount in half. We have a tendency to use more than we need. good luck

my son would develop an all-over rash when exposed to mold or peanut.

But my vote is for the concentrated laundry detergent!

My son had something similar happen a few months ago. We took him in to see the doctor, and it was definitely an allergic reaction to something, but we never really figured out what it was. He is pretty allergic and sensitive to lots of things. Wish I knew what did it, because it was an awful rash! We were told to give him Benadryl until it cleared up. His rash would come and go on different parts of his body, but it seems like it was mostly on his face, arms, and legs if I remember right. Definitely see what the doc says, because there are other illnesses that can cause rashes. Hope she feels better soon!

raised red rash is a hive. benedryl is what should be used then.

you might need to switch to Arm & Hammer Sensitive Skin, Ivory Snow, Dreft or the Purex Sensitive detergents.

I would also give her the salami again - in a SMALL portion - be on the look out for the hives. If that happens, give her benedryl and then note what food she had a reaction to.

If there is no reaction - then have her wear something that was washed in the Gain. If the hives appear - it's a detergent issue.

My son can't use Tide detergent - he's 11 years old and even today - has a red rash when Tide is used.

I know some people would say DO NOT experiment on your daughter. This is about knowing what your daughter can and cannot tolerate. As long as you are prepared with Benedryl - you are fine.

Possible 5th disease. My son has it - all I noticed was a rash - face, arms, legs - but not much on "trunk" (tummy, back) - doc said once the rash appeared it was no longer contagious - he said it is a "sneaky" thing because it sneaks up and you probably didn't even know the kid was sick - maybe a slight runny nose or something - possibly low grade fever. I didn't notice any symptoms before the rash appeared .... and there is nothing to treat it - it is just a virus and it goes away .... doc said rash may last off and on for up to 3 weeks.. Apparenntly 50% of people have had this disease and either don't know it or don't remember it.

Try one thing at a time so that you can tell which is making her break out.

As an allergic person myself, with children with allergies and now grandchildren with them, I can only say you may never know what caused the rash. You can try to eliminate things one at a time and see if that works. I would agree with you that if from detergent it should be on her back and stomach but maybe not. Hives are very strange. I used to get them when I was a child from hot water baths. The heat must have caused them. Food often causes hives. Keep a list of what she eats. Find a good allergist and stay under their care.

I've learned a lot over the years, but the last seven have had the most impact. First, we are married to our laundry detergent. It's in everything - sheets, clothing, towels, etc. The ONLY line of products I use is Shaklee - there are no bad chemicals. Their cleaning products made a HUGE difference in our family from allergies to just being able to breathe easier.

Here's a short video that may be of interest to you - http://www.video.me/ViewVideo.aspx?vid=402014
- Item #50442 at http://www.ShoppingWright.com

Check www.householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/ingredients.htm and put in what you use to see the chemicals in them and the health effects. These are only a few to look out for:
• Sodium hydroxide
• Hydrochloric acid
• Butyl cellosolve (2-Butoxyethanol)
• Formaldehyde
• Bleach (sodium hypochlorite)
• Ammonia
• Sulfamic acid
• Petroleum distillates
• Sulfuric acid
• Lye (potassium hydroxide)
• Morpholine

Sure hope it helps.
