Allergic Reaction to Flu Shot?

I work in a group home setting so I get my flu shot EVERY single year. I got mine for this year yesterday afternoon. I got the shot at 3pm and by about 4-4:30pm I had started to itch really bad. I went to the bathroom and lifted up my shirt and found splotchy patches of hives. It did not get worse during the night so I thought maybe it was from the new body wash I used Sunday night. Plus I had never had a reaction to the flu shot before so the thought just did not cross my mind. When I got off from work last night I took some Benadryl and went to bed. I woke up this morning and the hives are worse! They cover most of my torso now and have started to spread to my arms and legs. My palms are itchy and burn a lot too. I had a similar reaction many years ago to Amoxicillin but not any where near this bad. As soon as I can get my son on the school bus I plan on heading to the ER. I was just curious if any one else has had an allergic reaction to the flu shot before? What was it like? What were your symptoms? What did they do for the reaction?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went to the ER this morning. They looked me over and decided that I had a mild allergic reaction to an additive in the flu shot. I was given some steroids to stop the hives and help with the itching. He directed me to take 1 Bendaryl during the day and 2 at night until the hives are gone. It's only been a couple of hours now but the hives on my arms are starting to go away. I still itch like crazy but it is getting better. He said if I want to get a flu shot next year I can because they change the additives every year. So we will see. Thank you for the responses. I appreciate them very much!

It could be the medium the vaccine is prepared in or the preservative possibly. Any one could express allergic reaction to almost anything anytime in their life. Benadrl is a short term solution. You might need a shot of epinephrine such as in an Epi-pen. In general I would not wait till it is convenient to go to the ER or a local doctor for an allergic reaction. It can be very serious not something to self medicate except for a very short time. The fact the hives are spreading is serious. If I were you head over to an ER tonight if can put up with waiting 2-3 hrs to be seen. But for an allergic reaction they may pretreat you as they dont want liability! It can cause the throat to close up and make it hard to even breath! that is Extremely and emergecy then! then call an Ambulance to take you! Sorry to give this news but my brother suffers from allergy to Ginseng and when he was at a summer college program and the clinit in the country was closed he called my Dad an MD. He said he could barely dial the phone since his fingers were swelling. My Dad immediatly said he would drive up to him which was over an hr. Drive! To give him what he needed. Best of Luck! Maybe not it is getting better if not GO! IMO

Have you tried taking Benadryl? That might take care of the hives and itching, without going to the ER.
I had a bad flu like reaction this year. I know they say you cant get the flu from the shot. It was within 30 min of getting the shot though. I was incredibly sick all day and had the chills real bad. I was much better the second day though. My arm hurt for about 3 days.

Get your butt to the ER or docotr's office immediately!

I went throught the same thing. Although i was a bit stubborn back then. I waited 3 days, had the same thing, rash starting on my legs though. I thought the rash was because i shaved my legs the night before. then the next day it was up to my torso, i called the doctor and he said to take benedryl. Took the Benadryl, got worse, became extremely out of sorts, by the third day the rash had made it all over my face. I waited again until my husband came home from work and he told me he was traking me to the ER regrdless of my stubborness. He dropped the kids off at grandmas, and by the time i made it inot the ER they thought i was in the tanning booth for too long. I coded in the ER, the last thing i remembered was waking up and having tubes in me.

So do not wait!!!

Get in there now! You never know what can happen. I can't get the flu shots becasue i have nerve disorder.

Get in there!

Love ya! and many blessings!

Just an FYI for anyone else out there. Besides benedryl we often give Zyrtec and Zantac in the ER for moderate allergic reactions. Zantac is usually use for acid reflux/heartburn but because it is an H3 inhibitor it helps with allergic reactions too. Most often though you will require a steroid so either a trip to the ER or an urgent care is needed.
