i am trying to save money and cut down on some of my bills like, the phone and etc items. I was wondering if anybody knew of a phone service that has reasonable prices. I currently have Bellsouth and they are getting to expensive for me now. I tried Charter and they do not provide service in my area yet.

What can I do next?

I also had Bellsouth and thought they were too expensive. We no longer have a land line in our home and use our cell phones, like Estrella suggested. If you really want/need a home phone, you might try Vonage - we have been looking into them recently. My neighbors use Vonage and really like it and I believe they have very reasonable plans. You can look into them or some other Voice Over IP service.

There is a service called MagicJack. I belive that you pay for the unit and the first 30day are free. Each year you only pay $30 a year. The draw back it that this service work with your computer (plugs into the USB). Look this up on the internet for better details. A friend of mine was telling me about this a few months ago. I plan to sign up for this service when my contract is up w/Comcast.

Hi A.,

We have AT&T for DSL/Internet and then use Vonage for our phone line. It is referred to as "internet phone" instead of the regular phone line. Go to www.Vonage.com and check it out. For 32.00/month flat fee we have our phone and unlimited long distance.

I'm also a mom of four boys, so I try to save wherever I can.

We have VoIP/internet phone through Via Talk. I think we pay $20/month. It runs on our cable modem and we get all of the usual services: voicemail, caller ID, call forwarding... There are several VoIP providers around. Google VoIP reviews & you should get some good hits on which services are reliable and the most reasonably priced.

Another place I like to cut financial corners is with www.couponmom.com It's a free website & she has tons of good tips & updates weekly according to your zipcode (in Atlanta), though some of the coupons are for national chains like Target & Walgreens...

Good luck!

Hi A.,

I'm not an expert in phone rates, but the cellular only idea (as mentioned by the other moms) has worked for my husband and I for the past seven years. Just recently, I had to get a new phone for a home business and found a site called LetsTalk.com where you can get some phones for "free" (rebates are used) when you sign up for a new plan with certain carriers. We are using T-Mobile's "Faves" plan (you have certain numbers you can call with unlimited use) and added "HotSpot at Home" which is an awesome option if you use wireless internet already. This is a $20 per month option that "unlocks" a wifi ready phone so that anytime you are in a wifi area (including at home -- if you have wireless internet) you aren't using minutes at all -- it's unlimited usage through the internet. This enables you to go with a lower minutes plan (like the family faves plan with 700 shared minutes and unlimited "faves" calling) where you can pay as little as $70 per month for two lines. If you already use cell phones, you would probably save money doing something like this.

I also have vonage which is a voip service thru internet connection. It is very reasonably priced, the only drawback is when your internet goes down, so does your phone. We have caller id, block, forwarding, long distance, etc...

A. hello, you may want to check out Global Connection. With them you can get service with or without long distance. You can also prepay your long distance. Meaning you can pay an additional amount + your monthly bill amount to go toward long distance. There pretty affordable.
