Air Filter for Cat Litter Dust Problem?

Help! I use ScoopAway clumping cat litter for my 2 cats. It works GREAT for odor control - you'd never even know we had cats. My problem is the DUST!!!! The cat litter dust is EVERYWHERE! Whenever I dust I can smell the litter dust coming up. It's all over our furniture, my glass-top range, the kitchen counters, our kitchen table, etc. YUCK! I clean pretty often, too, but I have to clean off the counter tops to even cook. If the dust is everywhere I'm sure the microscopic poop and urine germs are circulating around the house as well. I emailed the company to ask and they gave me some explanation about what they do to the litter to help keep dust down before it leaves the factory but once it's out in the "consumer world" it's beyond their control. My husband and I had talked about getting an air filtration system for the corner where the litter box is and I just needed advice from anyone who has had this problem and how they dealt with it and any other ideas. We're trying for a baby and I REALLY don't want to bring a precious little child into this litter dust-covered house! Thank you!!!

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all the responses I received! This site is an amazing resource! In the end I decided to chuck the Scoop Away. I just couldn't handle the dust anymore. I couldn't go with any kind of pellet because one of my cats is neurotic and stopped using the box all together when I tried pellets before. And, as much as I'd love to have a self-cleaning box, it would be too big as the litter box is contained in a nice old wooden stereo cabinet I found at Goodwill to hide it (it has to be in the living room because the same neurotic cat started pooping on the carpet months ago and I had to re-locate the box). Also, after researching air filters, I found the cost to be prohibitive. So, after 10 minutes on the litter aisle at Walmart, I went with Arm and Hammer Essentials. I mixed my last little bit of old litter with it to hopefully ease the transition. The dust appears to be pretty much gone, even with a bit of the old litter in there. I'm sure it will be even better once I'm fully transitioned over. I AM SO THRILLED! And, my neurotic cat is using it!!! YAY!!! I'm so glad I posted this request. Thank you all, again!

Good morning J.:
I know just what you are going thru as my hubby and I are trying as well for a baby. I am 39 years old and beyond ready. Anyway, we have four cats and I used to use Fresh Step clumpling litter. I could not stand the dust and everytime I would love on my cats I would get the taste in my mouth! Yuck! You come into our house and could not tell we have animals till you saw them. I have solved the dust problem once and for all! I switched to ARM & HAMMER ESSENTIALS it comes in an orange bag and is completely dust free and best of all works even better than ANY of those clumping litters. It is derived from Corn and smells sooo good and it costs less, is safer for cats and your family because you are not inhaling all that other stuff. I have recommended to my mom who has one cat and she absolutly loves it too. I highly recommend it and would suggest you try it and let me know what you think. If you are trying to get pregnant you want to start now using better, safer products NOW for the sake of having a healthy baby.

Fresh Step clumping cat litter has almost no dust and works great. My cat is so spoiled to it that if I buy anything else she won't use the litter box. I would buy a small bag and see if it works good for you.

I won a Tidy Cats Breeze Litter System last year. There are pellets instead of litter. My two cats adapted quickly to the change. I love it because it's so much cleaner than traditional litter and not as much scooping because the urine goes through the pellets and into a pad that only has to be changed once a week. The downside is finding the pads and pellets. I stock up whenever I see them because they're always out of stock.

Good luck!

You know what my neighbors did? They made a cat door in their garage door (door inside the garage to the house) and put the littler box out there. Cats are very smart and will go to the garage to 'poop'. Maybe that could be an option. Saves you a lot of stress and the dust can stay outside.
Just a thought.

My other neighbor uses a self clean box. Maybe they are kicking up dust working around the clumps from before??

Happy cleaning, C

Hi J.,
I started using a pine pellet that is used for horse stalls that I bought at the feed store. It's so cheap and smells great. You can buy a 50 lb bag of it for under 6 bucks. The pellets expand when they become wet with the urine and you can still scoop the poop out with a scooper. It may not be for you but I love it and will never go back to litter.
Best Regards,
C.

Even with a HEPA filter, I could not keep the level of dust down. I switched to this new tidy cat litterbox system a few months ago:
http://www.amazon.com/Tidy-Breeze-Litter-System-1-Count/d...
I love that there is no dust - there a pellets and some get scattered, but again not like the clumpable litter. The liquids drain into a very absorbent pad and then you scoop solids regularly. I have 5 cats, so I have to scoop a couple times a day. The only thing I do not like at all is that I can smell when I need to scoop, but I still prefer this system over the old ones. I order the replacement stuff online from Amazon. com, so it's really extremely convenient. My cats also adjusted to the change with no problem.
