We went through this this past summer, and the doctor prescribed some stuff that did not work.
Here's what did work: Buy a bottle of olive oil and coat the hair and scalp with it, cover with a plastic bag, shower cap or something and leave it on overnight. In the morning, use a nit comb while the oil is still on the hair. You have to do a section about two inches at a time. It is very messy, so don't do it over carpeting.
Next, put a shampoo for oily hair on the hair , then wash and rinse it. A blow dryer is good because they don't like dry heat.
Nit comb the hair every day for a week and if there are still nits, repeat the oil treatment. It is non toxic and relatively cheap.
I bought some shampoo, and conditioner and repellant hairspray to use once I knew they were gone to prevent her from getting any more from school. I got them from Fairy Tales hair care. You'd have to google them.
Good luck

I went through this as well, but talked to a pediatric nurse before I bought anything. She advised NOT to use RID and any other lice treatment, as they are pesticides and who wants to wash their kids hair in something that is harmful to humans too? She recommended White Rain shampoo and a cholesterol hair treatment. Basically you want to suffocate the lice and remove the eggs. The hair treatments suffocate them, and then you use a fine lice comb to remove the eggs and nits. And don't forget to spray or wash the bedding, chairs, and backrest of the car.

The best thing to do is to buy Queene Helene. This is mainly used by african americans. It is a hair conditioner. Put it in your childs dry hair at night and leave it. Wash it out the next morning, dry and then pick out nits. Check hair each day for nits and re-apply every couple of days. I have had lice many times and this is the best safest treatment.

I feel for you. Please check out my post about lice from a month or so ago. There was an outbreak in my daughter's school, so I asked about it here. I got lots of advice--maybe something there can help you out. Good luck.

As a mom of a soon-to-be 13 year old, let me tell you...don't panic!! And especially don't make a big deal with your child. This happens all the time in the schools. Go to your local Wal-Mart or Kroger or other drugstore. The best I found was called RID. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS on the box and Sylvia will be fine. Strip her bed, pillows, anything else she might sleep with and wash them. All these instructions are found on the box.

Something else I learned during the "lice" stages of life: when getting her ready for school, lightly spray her hair with hairspray and then brush it through. Lice can hang on to clean hair, but using hairspray actually kills the lice if it comes into contact with her hair and dies before it gets a chance to multiply.

Good luck and don't worry! This is one of those natural, though unfortunate, stages of growing up.

We are just starting the same problem

My 3 yr old boy was sent home from school yesterday.

I put tea tree shampoo on his head......I waited a while. Then I resinsed it out....

This killed the bigger fast ones

Then I got a bottle of white vinegar/water...I measured out to a half and half mixture

I have two metal Rid combs....

I went to work on his head

I found quite a few of the nits yesterday

today when I went through
I found only 4 recently hatched
and then like a 1/3 as many nits

The vinegar and water will lossen the glue
I found it out from the school nurse..
it is saving us a ton of time off school

Now I wash his hair in the tea tree shampoo and then I use Lavendar conditioner

Just hoping that if one comes back it will be dead

Don't use those chemical treatments because they don't work! Go to the store and buy reg. mayonnaise and soak your child's hair in it. While soaking put some sort of cover over their head (hat, bandana, something) because the mayo becomes toxic after an hour, leave it in for about 8 hours. The mayo sufficates the louce and they die INCLUDING THE EGGS! Then wash their hair out with Herbal Essance shampoo (no conditioner!) several times, this may take a while to get the mayo out. Then rise their hair out with vinager (any type will do) this will release the grip the eggs have on the hair. Then comb with a lice comb and this should solve the problem in one shot! Also there is no need to wash everything. My doctor (who recommeded this treatment) said they die after being off of the human for 24 hours. That is why the schools don't do anything to their buildings because they know lice can't live with out a host for more than 24 hours. But I would put any bed sheets, blankets and pillows in the dryer for about 10 minuts just to be on the safe side. Good luck!

Hello. Just like the other mom said, first of all dont panic. I just went through beginning of last summer. This is what I did and it was all gone in a week. First thing I did was go to the store and bought a lice treatment, I bought the one that has the bed sray in it. I came home, put the lice treatment in my daughters hair and while that was sitting, I stripped all the beds, pillows, linens ect.. I started washing those, We sprayed all the beds with the bedding spray and opened the windows to air out the room ( not much of a smell to it but didnt want to take any chances).. I rinsed my daughters hair, and started going through it .. now my daughter had long curly hair,, unfortunately I cut her hair to go to the middle of her back, I didnt want to have to rip her hair out of her head trying to get through her banana curls with that knit comb, after I did that, I too used reg mayo.. I coated her head and let it sit.. I too beleive that using too much of that nit shampoo burns thier head.. soo I only used it once. I then rinsed her head and used a reg comb that has close teeth, to go through her head again.. (while she was still in the tub).. I read online that using conditioner on her head and using a reg comb will help slide the nits out.. so I washed her hair with reg shampoo and put conditoner on her hair and went through her head with a reg comb.. I then gave her a break for awhile and I vaccummed all my furniture. I then went through her head and I cut out the strands ( just the indiv hair that had any nits on them), the next day, I repeated the same process.. with the mayo, reg shampoo and reg conditioner, cutting out indivual strands, everyday you must wash her pillows, sheets ect.. so not to reinfest with the progress that you have made. Is it alot of work.. yes !! But I got rid of it in a week. Make sure you vaccuum your carpets, and furniture every day.. so that no one else takes a chance to getting it. Keep checking other children, and have someone keep checking you. I did it, ( i have a son, which I cut his hair pretty short, just to help insure he didnt get it. But like I said within a week it was gone and that was 6 months ago and we havent gotten it since. Good Luck

My sympathy is with you! We've been there. Just buy the lice kit at the pharmacy and follow directions on the box. You will want to buy a better lice comb than what comes in the box. Preferably, a metal one with closer "teeth" which will help get all the nits out. If after you do the treatment the first time and it doesn't get everything then try the mayonnaise treatment. You might be able to google lice treatment as well. We put REAL mayonnaise on the hair (coat it really well) and then a shower cap over it for several hours. This will suffocate the nits! Then take a comb through again and pick out everything you see layer by layer if your child has thick hair. Rinse well. It will make your childs hair really shiny, too. :) AFter the lice is gone make sure it stays gone. Read online for more details but, you have to clean all sheets/pillow cases anything you can in HOT water. Anything you can't wash, should be bagged in a garbage bag for 2 weeks until the lice die off. You should keep checking the whole family for the lice up to 2 weeks or more after it's been gone, too! A lot of work to make sure it's all out of your house! Good luck!

My daughter had lice 2 yrs ago. We treated with over the counter lice shampoo although it really didn't help so we had to call the doctor, they prescribed a more medicated shampoo and it worked. You also have to either throw out your combs and brushes or put them in your sink and soak them in hot boiling water. Also I was told to put pillows in a trash bag and tie it shut for at least 3 - 4 days. Also they love clean hair so maybe just wash it 2-3 times a week and use rave hairspray and keep her hair pulled up that seems to help. I hope some of this has helped you.

I am sure you have gotten plenty of advice about what to use for her hair, but also remember you must wash EVERYTHING that she has come in contact with. ALL blankets, clothes, sheets, should be washed and dried on high/hot. Don't forget the stuffed animals, those should all be put in the dryer and probably one of the most forgotten things, get a new hairbrush!!
Good Luck!

We put Mayo on our heads when we were young, put on a shower cap and went to bed. My mom cleaned our sheets in hot water and plastic bagged our pillows. They can't live longer than 24 hours off a host...but wit so many people in your house, they can be every where and on every body. Vaccum everything up, check everyones head, treat anyone that appears to have them, and check again in one-two weeks. Keep the pillows in plastic bags for 24 hours, washing anything that can be washed in hot water and hot dryer. RID works sometimes, but it takes MULTIPLE treatments. We tried that route, You buy it at walgreens and such. We used it for 2 weeks every so many days, and then we did the Mayo and it worked in one night. Throw away all the combs and brushes and buy new ones that your daughter or anyone else that has them can use. Or I think you might be able to wash them in HOT water and let them sit unused for 24 hours.
See, if your daughter has lice and sits on the couch and one climbs off on to the couch and the 2 year old sits down and the lice crawls into her hair, you now have two people in your house invest. If your daughter uses your brush and then you use it, you could get them. This is also how they are passed in school-coats hanging next to each other and such.

I would also find out the lice policy at school. Some schools allow you to come back after one treatment and really don't have a lice policy and others are strict and have a no nit policy. Which means, until you can look through their have, and not find any eggs at all (along with no live lice). Best of luck. With a good cleaning and proper treatment you can be lice free in 24-48 hours!

cheapest thing to do..
go buy the Suave shampoo. the main active ingredient in it (Laural Sulvate) is the same as that of many of the percription or pharmacy brands of the lice killing shampoo.
if you call the health departments.. they will tell you the same.
wash everyones hair with that shampoo, its gentle and you can get it in any scent you want.
comb out the lice with a lice comb and repeat.
