I don't remember how long I bled from after my first son.. How long should I expect to have my "period" after my second son? He's 2 1/2 weeks old now-- the bleeding has gotten lighter, but just trying to figure out how long..

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who shared :) The bleeding has stopped, so now I'm just waiting for the "real period" to start so I can start figuring out my new schedule. The baby's doing great, as am I. You all are so nice for your well wishes and sharing of your personal experiences.

Congrats on the new arrival!! For me, post-partum bleeding lasted 6 weeks for baby #1 and 10 weeks for baby #2.

hi,J..
usually it should end within 10days after giving birth. when i had my first son, my "period" couldn't end after 4 weeks. so i went to see a Chinese doctor, and after taking 1 week Chinese medicine it finally stopped.

by the way I'm Chinese. so i know when to see a american doctor, and when should see a Chinese doctor.
hope you can find a good one. good luck.

Hi J.! Congrats on the birth of your second son! I have two sons as well! Lots of fun coming your way!! Anyway, I am an RN on the maternity floor of a local hospital. You can bleed up to 6 weeks after delivery. It's typically not that long though; but 3-4 weeks is normal. It will get lighter and lighter and the color will change as well. It started out bright red after delivery and will change to pinkish then to brownish.. If it turns bright red again and gets heavier, that's your body's way of telling you that you're doing too much..
hope that helps!! congrats again!

With my second, I had heavy bleeding for 2 weeks, then light for another week before it tapered off. Nothing for a week, then came back lightly for another week or two.

Got my real period when he was around 5.5-6 months and starting solids. My period is now way different than before. It is super heavy day one and two, then super light for another 2-3 days.

Good luck- and just remember that EVERYTHING changes with each pregnancy.

I think it varies w/ur physical activity - w/my oldest I bled for about 8 wks (i was also running around though) - w/my youngest I didn't do too much and it stopped around 4 wks. Good luck!

I bled for one month after I had my son. Then it stopped for one week, just like the doctor said. After that one week the "real" period started and was supposed to last as long as my normal mensis did before the baby. Guess what? It didn't stop, so after 28 days I called my doctor. He said I should have called sooner, because of the high risk for anemia and prescribed a higher dosage of birth control pills to stop it. What happened was that I don't make enough of the right hormone to stop it. You might want to call your doctor to make sure your body is on track.

After my son was born I bled for 3-4 week real blood like a period and lightly spotted old brown blood for another 2 weeks after that. I have always read though that if you are passing big clots call your doctor regardless. But that never happened to me.

Hey J.,

It really varies from person to person,

For instance the bleeding your having now might stop next week.

But then immediately afterwards you could get your first period,

I remember one pregnancy I bled for 6 full weeks, then I didn't get a period for 6 months due to my breast feeding

Another time its was 3 weeks, and then one week later my period came.

and another it was 4 weeks, then 2 weeks later my period.

So you just never know LOL its one of those crazy things.

Good luck

M

It should stop soon! Good sign that it's gotten lighter. If it seems to get heavier again I'd call the dr, but you should be on the way out.

Mine was a full 6 weeks, although the last 3 or 4 were very light. Breastfeeding helps to shrink your uterus down, which will make the bleeding lighter, so keep that up as much as possible. Then my period didn't come back until my son was 14 months old because I was breastfeeding. It was so nice!

I think it depends on the pregnancy. With my first baby, I bled for only one week (very light) and then nothing until my baby was 6 months old (I was breastfeeding and she had just started solid foods). With my second baby, I bled for 4 weeks (still very light) and then it stopped until my son was 5.5 months old. It'll stop soon, don't worry!

Hi J.,
The after birth lochia can vary from person to person, usually a few weeks. As long as it's getting lighter and tapering off, that's normal. If it starts to get heavier/darker again, let your OB or Midwife know. Good luck and congratulations on the new baby!

hi J.,
I bled for over a month, and it got lighter then heavier during that time. I had a very long birth though which may have added to the length of bleeding. anyway, it is normal and it is not your period.

J., I had c-sections (which you are supposed to bleed a shorter amount of time after) with all three of my children and the time afterwards was different with each. My first two seemed to last a while...I'm thinking 6 weeks with my oldest and 4 with my middle. Now, the last one was only about 2 or 3 weeks! :)

You are probably very close to the end from the sounds of it. :) Congrats on yur little one!!

If I remember correctly, I was still bleeding enough for a panty liner until about 6 weeks after giving birth.

Congratulations on your new addition.

The good news and the bad news is that each pregnancy is different. If you are breast feeding it may take longer but doesn't necessarily have to.

It will come when it comes and if you are like me it will be a surprise.

Enjoy these moments, they go by so fast.

Hi J.,

I think it was about 6 to 10 weeks for me. Sorry, it may be around for awhile.

I have this same situation too. I am currently 7 weeks postpardom and apparently had my period two weeks ago during week 5. It was really long and heavy. My doc said it was my period. But now I have more bleeding and it is darker, a brown color and I don't know what to think of it. Apparently we can bleed every now and or steadily, it may not be consistent. Since you just had your son you will probably bleed for another two weeks. Then it should stop and if you are not breastfeeding then you will get your period anytime after week 4. It varies in each woman and pregnancy, that is what the other women are trying to say as well.
