Affordable Airfare to Hawaii

My husband and I have a chance to stay for free in my FIL's timeshare in Hawaii. On a very quick price check on airfare from DFW to Honolulu, the tickets were $900 each. Do you have any tips on finding more affordable airfare to Hawaii? We would be there in early July. Thank you for your advice!

What can I do next?

All I can tell you is that we've looked everywhere recently, and inexpensive tickets to Hawaii don't exist. Airfare is generally expensive right now, and discount airlines don't fly that far.

Sorry for the bad news.

Your problem is your timing... :/ Unfortunately, during the summer, it's going to be VERY difficult to get cheap airfare to Hawaii. We'll be going in late March and I just bought our tickets for $600 each originating from a non-major airport (basically, not like DFW), so we got a fantastic deal. It's all about the season.

I don't think I would say that there is affordable airfare to Hawaii. HA. It's pretty expensive unless you catch a good deal.

I would recommend a few things:

Sign up for Hawaiian Air and get their email alerts. You can get some good deals that way.

The other thing I would do is to take a Hawaiian Air credit card out. They offer one free flight plus a companion fare at 50% off. Total deal if you ask me. We did that a while back and it worked out perfectly.

Good luck.

The cheapest time to fly is the middle of the week. Leave and return on a Wednesday if you can. We are flying in june (not hawaii, but a caribean island) and the differece between a mid-week vs. week end/friday (even thursday!) flight is $250 a person.

Good luck!

Try Skyscanner.net
I haven't used it though. After you enter the dates, if you click on "select dates" it will show you a month worth of prices for each day. A friend once found a flight to Florida for $25 one way.

I've also been looking as we like to try to go somewhere warm in the winter time for a week. From DC to Hawaii is stupid expensive. I'm not sure that trip will EVER happen for my family of 5.

That seems really high but I don't know for sure from TX. I actually saw $220 out of Monterey to the big island a few weeks ago with only one stop. It seemed amazingly low and maybe it was just a fluke.

One tip is to buy separate tickets for connecting flights. It's a total pain but you can save. You get a cheap flight from one hub to another and then the cheapest to your final destination. You have to re-check luggage though.

You may want to check Allegiant airways and the major cities they fly out of to Honolulu. You can get cheap tickets from Spokane, WA or other cities for less than $300. They only fly certain days, so that can be an issue... but if you're flexible and can find a cheap flight to one of their connecting cities, it could work out... Good luck!

$900 RT from DFW does not sound bad to me.

We fly in and out of DFW and Love Field a lot for business and pleasure. I only deal directly with American and Southwest. If you go to their sites, you can get good deals... mostly if you book way in advance but also, if you forgo a non-stop flight you might save a little.

I never shop the discounters because when you do, if there is an issue, you have nothing but an 800 # and someone who could care less about your situation. The tickets purchased on discount sites are also the first ones bumped when airlines start bumping as well... For the record, this goes for rental cars and hotels as well. Example on hotel.. we are diamond members for Hilton. If a hotel is booked and we call to get a reservation (or any diamond member for that matter), whomever booked that hotel via a doscounted site gets bumped to another hotel.

With your plans in July, you are looking well enough in advance for decent tickets and quite honestly, $900 for Hawaii is not bad.

Enjoy!

Have you tried Priceline? You can look at every carrier's airfare to see who is the cheapest. Then, once you know what price range you're dealing with, you can name your own price. If you don't care what time of day you fly, and let's face it - there aren't that many options from DFW to Honolulu - you might be able to get a good deal. My husband and I do this all the time and get crazy cheap airfare.

I tried finding discount tickets from Sacramento to Maui and the lowest I found was $700/ticket. That meant we had a stop on the way (WTH, we're not that far from the California coast?!). I checked every travel site out there and directly with airlines and couldn't find any deals.

We ended up cancelling our trip to Maui this year because it was going to be far more expensive than we anticipated.
