my little girl is 5 mos. She takes 2 tsp of rice cereal with a spoon before her bedtime bottle. I am wanting to start some other foods/cereals at 6 mos. I know about introducing slowly to watch for allergies. What first foods did you start with?

What can I do next?

I started with rice like you and after a while, I had to add other food b/c baby didn't like the rice cereal plain anymore. I winged it and added banana and applesauce (not together, at different feedings) and she did fine with it. After we made the rounds with the fruits and had no reactions, we started veggies. We have had no problems with our baby eating veggies.

I usually give half a jar of veggie on one side of the bowl and half a jar of fruit on the other side of the bowl. If she starts getting tired of veggie I plug in a couple of bites of fruit and then go back to veggie with no problem.

I have used the book Super Baby Food with my third. It gives a lot of good info about making your own baby food (which is super easy), it also tells you what are good first foods and at what age to introduce certain foods. She has a lot of info in there so you have to kind of sift through it. She recommends the first foods to be bananas, sweet potatoes, avacados, and of course rice cereal.

I started w/ fruits like applesauce, but they say not to, to start w/veg. So they don't only want the sweetness of fruits. I didn't have that problem w/my kiddos though.

At our four month check-up our pediatrician gave us an infant feeding chart. The chart says to start with dark yellow (not corn), orange, and dark green vegetables first. She reinforced introducing one at a time for several days to check for allergies. Hope that helps!

Hey M.!

We went to the Dr. for our 4 month check up today! We have been eating 2 tablespoons of rice cereal in our night time bottle for about 2 months now. We just starting this week eating 2 teaspoons of rice cereal with a spoon 2 times a day. The Dr. said after about 7-10 days of that then to start with either rice cereal with fruits or if you want to mix it up then to do veggies and try each one for 3 days before starting a new one. Then after that fruits and then meats!

Good luck.

My pedi also said to start with veggies and then go to fruits and then meats. I found out later too that my daughter prefered the taste of the fruits cold from the fridge and the veggies just straight from the cupord. She didn't like the green veggies much at first but I tried them again after the other veggies before the fruits and then she ate them just fine. Good luck and keep the camera handy for all of those funny first taste faces! :)

green, yellow, orange, then fruits. I did this wrong in the begining...I started fruits first and it was SO HARD to get her to eat veggies later. I started at 6 months and just now at 10 months I have got her to eat green veggies. START WITH GREEN, then they will eat ANYHTING.
