Advice on Kindergarten in Garland Independent School District

My son went to kindergarten at Armstrong Elementary in Sachse. It is a wonderful school. The principal there was also principal at my older son's school (Kimberlin Academy) when he was in first grade. I have a tremendous amount of respect for her. My son loved it there. He now attends Watson, which is a science/math magnet school. My older son attended Sewell for kindergarten, and I wasn't real happy with it. Of course, he is a 6th grader now, so things may have changed significantly since he was there. I know they have a different principal than when he was there. I'm not sure what area you live in, so I don't know which schools you are close to.

Not all schools in the Garland ISD wear uniforms. It is up to the individual schools. I know Lister has uniforms. I don't believe Sewell has uniforms. Armstrong does not have uniforms.

1. Once your child starts school you will not be asked to change to another school. (i had this fear also two years ago when we relocated hereto Rowlett).

2. Just remember that the child that lives closer to the school gets priority over anything. (I chose a popular school in our area. I was worried we wouldn't get 1st choice due to it's popularity.. I chose it, because it was only two blocks from our home, and we got first choice bcs of our location!

3. I just received a list of schools that will be going to uniforms next year, so you might be able to get this list from GISD. But not all GIS school required uniforms, it up to each school principal! But all school have made their decision already about uniforms for next year in GISD..

We live in Garland and my daughter will be in 1st at Abbett. I don't know about the schools that you are speaking of, but I have found alot of info on the GISD web site which can take you to each individual schools site, and also greatschools.org
I would also go up and talk to your school(s) asap-- I found that to ease my stress instead of listening to all of the neighborhood mom's opinions/gossip

I also live on the border of Rowlett and Garland. I have a 7 year old daughter who goes to Herfurth Elementary. It is located on Miller in Rowlett. It is an awesome school! My daughter loves her teachers and the other students. You should take a tour there sometime and see if it something you might be intersted in. Hope this helps!

What is your neighborhood school? If you are on the border of rowlett Garland what about Rowlett Elementary. You can get bumped the next year if the school you choose is not your neighborhood school I think these are both fine choices. I have worked for garland for 5 years. GOod Luck
