We will be moving out of my boyfriends parents house this summer (either june or july) and getting our own apartment. I was just wondering what all we will need to get as far as supplies go. i kinda have a list but not sure exactly what all we should get right away (i love to cook and wanna get a food processer and blender to make smoothies and sauces with) I am not sure if we should get a good pot and pan set or just get one that is in our price range and maybe end up having to get a new set a few months later. and what utentiles we should get same with dish towls and rags and bathroom towls and rags

No I mean what does YOUR family use that you just couldnt manage without daily that you would suggest to a couple for the FIRST time going on their own at all along with their daughter. He is turning 23 and I am 20 and we are just really starting to figure things out what we need to get to move and its over whelming,

What can I do next?

Some stuff is trial & error, like Nancy W. said, you'll find that you buy or are given some things that you never use & there will be others that you can't live without. I don't know what your budget is like, but here are the things that I use on a daily basis which can be found between Kohl's, Target & Wal-Mart/Sam's Club:

Coffee pot w/ permanent filter
Wolfgang Puck knife set -- whatever brand you like, but get something decent or they won't stay sharp for long
Cuisinart hard anodized cookware set -- you can certainly get a cheaper set that will last several years, we've been on our own for 16 years & just got this set 2 Christmas's ago
Collander
Oster Fusion blender/food processer -- has pre-programmed buttons for smoothies & food processing plus crushes ice with no problems
Wooden cutting boards for fruits/veggies
Plastic cutting boards for meats
Measuring spoons & cups (dry & wet)
Wooden spoons
Rubber spatulas
Pot holders
Set of mixing bowls, either plastic or glass
Cookie sheets
Roasting pan
Glass bakeware (2 & 4qt covered, 9x13 & 7x11 oblong)
I would get 8 place settings of dishes as well as silverware so if you have guests over you'll have plenty for everyone
2 sets of sheets per bed
2-3 towels per person

Good luck to you! Things I use regularly -
Pancake turner, mixing spoons, collander
measuring cups - dry and liquid
set of teaspoons and tablespoons
mixing bowl, I still use the plastic ones with the lids I bought inexpensively.
set of tupperware type containers - buy one of the premade sets
Moderate set of pots and pans and a skillet - you don't need a great set, they will last for several years.
laundry hamper and laundry basket
depending on flooring - broom and dustpan, sweeper - I would probably go with a bagless for me if I could do it again.
Hotpads, cutting board, cake pan, cookie sheet.
We use our toaster oven all the time but friends don't even have one.

As far as the material things, there are many items you will need to get in order to do the things you want to do in the home, like cook, entertain, etc. Some of the things are rather important from the beginning like ice trays, and a basic set of pots and pans, and others items you may be able to pick up later at a good sale, like food processors, bread makers, etc.

I recommend you don't forget to equip your relationship with the tools you will need to make that successful too! There are relationship education classes that teach the conflict resolution skills, communication techniques, budget making skills, understanding your personality differences, setting goals and expectations together, etc. These are probably the most important things you can have to make your house a home. These things are what will determine whether this relationship will last and work. All the material things in the world will not make a difference. Visit smartmarriages.com for a list of providers of relationship education classes in your area or go to TrustMarriage.com for information about classes in southwest Ohio.

Good luck to you!

For the kitchen, I've bought so many things I rarely used and then given them away. Here are some of the things I use alot and have kept:

one chef's knife (i use the santoku style)
one paring knife and cutting board
half dozen good steak knives (the cheap ones bend)
hand held mixer (about 20$ -good for all types of mixing)
blender for smoothies
toaster oven
Cuisinart stainless steel cookware: large covered fry pan, 6-8 qt stock pot for soup and pasta, 2 qt sauce pan for making rice and sauces.
Corning ware dishes and serving bowls
set of utensils
glasses and coffee mugs
towels, potholders
glass storage containers with plastic lids
crockpot
baking sheets
a few wooden spoons, a ladle, large serving spoon

IKEA and Target have had starter kitchen sets for sale, usually around the end of summer when college students are moving into their own places and need everything right away.

I assume you are looking for the necessities
A good skillet
a pan to boil pasta etc
spatula
egg turner (egg, hamburger etc)
a draine(for draining pasta or washing vegtables)
a med sized cutting board
a least one small sharp knife and
one large sharp knife
I personally love my pampered cheif ice cream scoop (melts the ice cream for easy scooping)
and my pampered cheif garlic press (only if you press garlic or ginger)
Those are the bare minimums
Best wishes

I've moved so many times it is amazing how important the little things are and how little other things you can get by with.
some ideas
paper and cleaning products (I have moved only to realize I had to use the bathroom and had NO toilet paper)
toilet bowl brush
trash cans
3 towels and wash cloths each (if you have a washer and dryer, otherwise enough to get from whenever you do the wash until the next wash day)
At least 1 extra set of bedding for each bed
a basic pot and pan package, you can buy a cheap set and with proper care it will last a couple of years. Think 1 sauce pan, 1 large pan, 1 small and 1 large skillet.
enough silverware to last the day (at least) so figure 3 forks ect, per person per day.
laundry baskets
fans (you never know how hot a house is until you move in)
a collander (sp), slotted spoon, cooking spoon, spatula, rubber scraper, some steak knives, a good knife, 1 or 2 backing dishes, pot holders, 3 or more kitchen towels and rags, a cookie sheet
enough plates and bowls to get from breakfast till dinner for each of you
I'm sure you have seen the apartment, but budget for extra storage if you think you will need it, shoe organizers, under the bed storage totes, a behind the toilet shelf ect. (i've lived in some TINY apartments and storage has always been an issue)
also if anyone offers up stuff or you find a great deal with garage sale season coming, think ahead to holidays, you're going to need your own decorations, christmas tree ect this year.

Good luck!

R.,
When I was your age and had my first apartment I had three pans one spoon and a spatula. One medium pot for boiling water one skilled with a lid and one big pot corn or making chili. All hand me downs. If guests came over and we didn't have enough plates I used paper plates. Don't worry, you need much less than you think. 2 towels, 2 hotpads, 4 rags and your good. I use mostly water and vinegar to clean with, it disinfects and is cheap.
Enjoy your apartment and don't worry about all the other stuff.
Everything you own, owns you.

This is kind of a hard question to answer. I mean, do you want us to literally list every single thing you would need? You should know yourself and family well enough to know what the basics are and you know what your finances will allow. So you start with what you need the most: beds, places to sit, table, basic cookware and dish set, basic utensils, towels...etc. I mean, you listed needing a blender as one of your first things and I'm 44 and have never had a blender. So just start with what you need and add to it as you can. Good luck!
