Hi mommies, hubby and I just got invited to a wedding and we are very excited.
I'm just interested in your thoughts about what kind of dress to wear. I'm inclined for black since it's at night. The ceremony won't be in a church but it will be formal.
I've heard white is off the list because there's already one bride :) but I'm clueless as to what colors are acceptable and what lenght of dress is better. I do not want to look like a vixen but I do not want to be a wall flower either.
Thank you all in advance for your responses! any experiences that you can share are highly appreciated.

So What Happened?

Thank you mommies! I read all your posts,Thank you so much for your advice, I definetively don't want to be remembered for the wrong reasons :) so fear not, I will settle for something classy and feminine.
I actually went window shopping to the mall today, there were sooo many dresses, some beautiful some downright tacky. Still , I had a lot of fun, I still have time to choose since we are a month away from the wedding date. so far, I've settled on knee lenght and No strapless or white. I'll follow your advice and have fun!
Thank you again and I'll keep you in mind when I'm shopping for "The" dress .

Black, white, red, any color....no color is off limits now. I recommend a nice cocktail dress. Personally, I wouldn't go too sexy, but that's just me. But, it's ok to show a little cleavage. have fun!

Be aware of your body type. Always wear something that looks tasteful on your figure. If you own a solid color suit, wear it with some new colorful jewelry and carry a small handbag in the color of your suit or to bring out the color of the jewelry. If you choose to wear a suit and have great legs, get a pedicure and wear a sexy sandal heel to make the suit more of an evening look.

Dress your age. The last person advised against anything to revealing. I second that!!! Cleavage at a wedding is a no no!!! Black is fine!

Wear something comfortable that you can enjoy dancing and standing for long periods of time. Weddings are a time to socialize and if you are not comfortable in what you have on, you will be sitting at your table watching everyone else have fun.

Have a great time!

Christi

I've seen all kinds of dresses worn at weddings, so go for anything you feel comfortable wedding. Try some summer colors...coral, pink, orange, yellow, etc.

I recently had a formal evening wedding at a country club to attend, so I combed the internet for advice on what to wear. What I learned was that black is perfectly acceptable in the evening. The only colors I was told to steer away from were white (for obvious reasons) and red. You may want to avoid anything overly flashy (like sequins), so you do not "outshine" the bride. Additionally, stay away from anything that is low-cut or too revealing. One site said not to go strapless, but I noticed several strapless dresses at the event that were still tasteful, so that would be a judgement call for you. Foley's/Macy's in Collin Creek mall has a lot of really pretty, fairly inexpensive dresses that fit the bill (I had a really hard time deciding), so you may want to check there. Hope this helps you!

Proud Mommy,

As long as you aren't showing to much clevage and the dress is to your knees (or close) you should be fine. Black is always a wonderful choice. Red is probably not good and white is just wrong. Yes, you must remember the bride is the center of attenion and should be... BUT. It is a night out for you and you shouldn't hesitate to look as beautiful as you can.
I been to about 4 weddings this year alone and you will see evrything. If it is formal go for the little black dress. You can't go wrong. Have fun with it and enjoy your night out.

Good luck.
Jenn

Hey, it's always so exciting to go out and have some fun "adult time" at a wedding! I had the same oppportuniuty 4 months after my little girl was born and had no clue what to wear. I have always been told not to wear white for the same reason but was also told no black. I can't remember the big deal about it b/c my thoughts were that it made me feel slimmer and pretty after being home and having a baby. My conclusion? I wore a black skirt with a matching black and white top that was perfect for an evening wedding. I wanted to wear something with more color but the black and white outfit turned out to be the thing that fit best and that I felt pretty in and I thought it worked out fine. Im not sure of the details on wedding ediquet but I think wearing maybe a knee length dress of your choice, maybe your favorite color will be great! You can always check with Emily Post for wedding ediquet advice! I hope you all have a wonderful time at the wedding and im sure you'll look great!

black is always safe, but it can also be very boring since nearly every woman at an evening wedding wears black. if you wear black, i would chose a dress with some interesting detail such as a halter top or back with a cutout. nothing trashy of course. i like to wear a pretty color that is unique but not flashy. that way i don't feel like i'm wearing a uniform. i think any length works from knee to floor. the most important thing is for you to feel comfortable and pretty! have a good night out!!!

Sometimes the invitation has a color font/ribbon/card on it. This usually (but not always) tells what colors the reception will be. I always wear these colors, it makes me feel more of the 'spirit' of the event (and I don't feel out of place! Get a simple, elegant cut dress and assesorize with a pretty jewelry emsemble (earrings and a necklace) You don't have to spend a lot (get something you can wear again). It's no fail and classic! Stick to something that isn't too bright or flashy. Just add some mascara, lipstick and a smile!

My only advice is not to wear something "loud". I know I can't even remember half the people who came to my wedding, let alone what they wore, but I CAN remember this one lady (a Parental friend) who wore this black lace top and tight skirt. That's the only outfit I remember besides a girlfriend who wore a bright red halter with her boobs half hanging out. So, my advice would be muted is best! You don't want to be a funny memory! : )

Good Morning! Proud Momma P.

I have my own feeling about this, and I read all of your responses. Well, I think they have coverage all. We really have some classic young woman on our Mama's Source Site. congradulations
you did it. I love dressing formal but I always dress what makes me feel good. I never wear flash colors during a time like this. Tastefully, in season, attitude just be one of sure happiness.
Sometimes, people tend to bring their "I wish it was me" with them. Well, tone that down alittle.
Be geniune happy for the couple at all cost. Secereity is the best policy for both wedding mates. Have a good times and relax. And please do not embasse the bride and Groom by having too much fun by acting too silly, and by all means don't over do it in the drinking to much and don't forgetting this is their Bride & Groom day. But, "at all cost" have a Ball. It is a celebration!
