Advice on Bumpers- My DD Is Sticking Her Legs Through the Rail Spaces!

They make mesh like bumpers that are breathable...so if they are sleeping up next to it they can still breath thru it. Try that....my kids did it too and it drove me nuts.

I used bumpers with all 3 of my baby's no problems. They also all had blankets. The controversly about these things I thinks is foolish, but then I had my baby's in the 80's. Use bumpers

All 3 of my kids lived w/o bumpers. i wouldn't do it. So what if they stick their arms through? i think a couple times a leg got stuck for a second, but, so what?

I remember worrying about such things. Now I worry that she will get outside without me knowing, zoom down the drive way in her big wheel and go shooting into the street. What I'm trying to say is this: soon enough you will be simply weeding it down to how to prevent serious injury and death. Don't worry so much about inconvienceces that may be painful like getting a leg stuck. She'll let you know if she's got a leg stuck, but she can't let you know if she's suffocating. FYI I gave into crib bumpers about this age. She still managed to stick her legs through (when she was older) and has never gotten stuck or suffocated.

Ugh. And THEN (in addition to the fear of them really getting stuck and hurting themselves), your prescious wee one looks like they've been caned. At least mine did.

We had bumpers, and they didn't work, except to cusion his head, which he ALSO liked to smoosh up against the side. He liked to wiggle his arms and legs underneath them.

What we did was to take the matress out, put a kingsize sheet under the matress, and then fold and and pin the sheet over the railings...so he couldn't poke his arms and legs through.

She will be fine without a bumper! She will learn about the crib slats and figure out her way around them. I did not use anything for either of my kids and it worked out fine.

I used the mesh bumpers too. His legs kept getting stuck in the railing and he would cry. : ( I found them at Babies-R-Us. My son was not in the crib for very long we ended up co-sleeping. Which we were never going to do LOL. I agree with the babies will cry if there leg or arm get stuck but can't cry if they are not breathing.

I had the same problem/concerns when my daughter was about that age. We didn't have a bumper at first. Then she started sticking her legs through but also spun around in her sleep and would hit her head on the wood rails, which we were more worried about. So I finally bought a bumper... but foolishly didn't get a mesh or flat one, but got a kind of fluffy one instead. It was never a problem for the baby, but it caused me constant fretting... so maybe go for the mesh or flat one just for your own peace of mind. My daughter immediately took to scooting herself into the corner and face planting in the fluffy bumper. We used to try to move her, but she always went back. We finally got comfortable with the idea that it wasn't harming her and she's slept that way ever since (now 11 months old). Hope that helps. Good luck with your decision.

At this age I think it is safe. Just make sure that it is well installed and is tight. If she can lift her head up, then I think she should be able to turn her head away if her face ends up in it :)

I'm sure you've already heard about these, but there are mesh breathable bumpers that are great. My four month old got her hand caught in the slats two months ago and I have been using the mesh bumper ever since. It's also nice because she's now at the age where she turns over but can't right herself. If her face presses against the mesh, I don't have to worry as much about SIDS and suffocation as with a regular bumper.

Same problem. Got the mesh bumpers off One Step Ahead online and he did great. Still occasionally puts his legs through now because his legs are longer now (14 mo) but he can figure out how to get out by himself at this point. Might take them off soon but since they're really not getting in the way, may just leave them.

I left my son's bumpers on until he was about 7 or 8 months old and using them to pull himself up on. If you are worried about her suffocating and sticking her legs through why not tie the bumpers to the outside of the crib. that way she can't put her legs through and she won't get her face caught. Although if she can lift her head and move it side to side then she's fine. She won't let herself suffocate.

We went through the same thing. My DD's legs would get stuck and she'd wake up crying. My mom told me it was fine to use a bumper despite everything I was reading and sure enough my daughter's head got stuck when we tried. So, we used a breathable, mesh bumper that they sell at Babies R Us and it worked great for us. It sags sometimes and makes changing the bed more difficult but it was worth it. She's 21 months now and we just stopped using it a couple of months ago. Good luck.

We used them the entire time my daughter slept in her crib (since 3 months old) without a problem. Just make sure they are tied on tightly, with the ties on the outside of the crib. You can even knot them so they are difficult to get off.

We took them off a few months ago, as my daughter was trying to use them as a stepping stool for climbing out of her crib.

I used them with both my kids as babies.
There are many different kinds of crib bumpers. Try researching it online.
Yes, some babies/kids will stick their legs/arms through the railings at some point. It won't be continuously...as they learn.

They sell "breathable bumpers" at Babies R Us. Those worked great for us!

I have a 16mon. and have used bumpers since the day we got home. But as to helping with sticking legs through she is still going to do it. it might take a bit for her to do it. I think you should just do what you think is best for you guys.

we used a bumper until my dd was about 15 mos. At that time she was getting to the point where she was trying to stand on them. we tied them loose so she would not get any leverage and then I took them off. her older sis started climbing out at 14 mos. and the the crib was over. Thank goodness for convertable cribs. If you decide to use a bumper make sure it goes down enough so she won't put her legs underneath. also she may stick them through the slats above the bumber.

Not sure if you already received this advice, but go to www.onestepahead.com - the site has a mesh bumber that we used for my older son and that we are now using for our 1 year old. It works great!

You might want to try a crib tent. I had the bumpers on my son's crib until he stood up and when I took them off, he was getting his legs caught. The crib tent has been on his crib since Sept. Love it! Worth the $70!

They make a mesh bumper just for this purpose. It is like a fine netting so they can't suffocate and it still lets air through, but it serves it's purpose. We got ours at Babies R Us. Good luck to you. : )

I was having the same issue with my four month old daughter and didn't want to use the nice bumper that came with her bedset due to SIDS. I likewise discovered the Breathable Bumper and it seems to be working great. I put my own face up to it in order to ensure I could breathe through it and I was able to easily do so. It's definitely worth checking out!

Breathable Bumpers are great, I use them for my 10 month old daughter. I was also on the fence with the bumper issue and I am so glad I bought them. I got mine at Babies r Us and they come in a wide range of colors. If you don't want your little one getting hands or feet caught between the rails and you are worried about the danger of bumpers this is the way to go.

I first used the "Breathable Bumper" at Babies 'R' Us....then we she could roll over both ways, I put the 'regular' bumper guard on. I think she would be fine w/the regular bumper now.

They have "breathable bumpers" that are a tight mesh that still allows the child to breathe through it if they get their face near it, and it would prevent her legs from going through. I think they sell them a lot of places, but I have seen them for sure one onestepahead.com Hope that helps! :)
