It really depends on what percentile they are in for height as well. My kids were always equal, though high (percentile), so no one really cared.

Though being high would probably make everyone mellow too. :p

My baby was 10.4lbs and 22inches at birth, she's 9 1/2 months old and weighs almost 21pounds and just under 28 inches. She's right up at the 98% and has always been. Nothing wrong with that.

If she's consistently been in the 100th %tile since birth and is growing in her own curve consistently, is thriving, is healthy, happy, and doesn't have any developmental delays neurologically AND her size isn't inhibiting her development of gross motor skills or fine motor skills... I wouldn't be worried.

My eldest daughter was in those very same upper percentiles until she started walking. Then she started to lose the chubbiness a bit. She was thriving in all areas so my doctor never, ever mentioned seeing a pediatric endocrinologist in spite of my worries. She just said that some children are in that part of the curve and are still normal. It's when they're off the charts that she worried AND/OR their growth was not consistent.

However, I do suggest that you get a second opinion from another pediatrician. My concern is that your pediatrician is being alarmist right now, but she could also be "covering the bases" and making sure that nothing is actually wrong. Another pediatrician could reassure you one way or the other.

My opinion? They are alarming you for no reason.
There are large kids, and there are little kids.
And kids everywhere in between!
I remember O. young new pediatrician making done remark about my child's growth and a need to re-check him in 3 months then possible leg X-rays, etc. I was FREAKING for 3 months! Upon the re-check? She was all like "oh-didn't mean to alarm you--he's following a curve, and tats what we look for." Really? Thanks for pushing my panic button! Lol
The next 2 years, my son had 3" then 4" height growth.
He went from being the peanut to passing up his friends.
The thing is, you cannot change her genetic makeup and kids grow at different rates at different times.
Soooooo...relax, wait & see, then follow up in 6 mos.
Good luck!

Well, I'm no doctor, but someone has to be in the 100 percentile...

Jo, your kids were high? ;-)

I'm not sure you should be worried.
What does the doctor mean by plateau? It sounds like your baby has remained consistant.

My daughter was so little, she didn't even hit the "charts". She had her own little percentile curve. She weighed 12 pounds at a year old. However, she was a dynamo since day one and was walking at 7 months. She was perfectly healthy. Now, she's 26, 5 feet tall, weighs 100 pounds soaking wet (and that's after giving birth to an 8 pound kid). She's built exactly like my mother. Her dad and I are both tall and thin, but she got the tiny from my mom.

So, as long as your daughter is healthy, I wouldn't worry too much for now. I know that they tested my daughter for iron and other levels, but like I said, she was such a little dynamo and a good eater, there was no cause to worry due to her small size. All tests came back normal.

Consults are just that....to make sure that all is well.

Unless the pediatrician has told you to put your baby on a diet or you are feeding her tons of high fat foods, I would just enjoy her. Keep her active with play, practice motor skills. Try not to stress between now and her next check up.

All babies develop differently.

Best wishes.

My oldest was 9 lbs.....always over 100% off the charts. Shes now happy healthy 15 year old.....size 0.....no worries. As long as she's eating healthy and not fatty high calorie food all is good.

At 5 we saw Endocrinologist.....long story short-eating a lot of highly processed foods (like chicken nuggets) makes kids bigger faster, makes girls development faster. At that point we went natural and organic. My second who eaten completely different from my first is small (she was also breastfed which my first wasn't). I wondered if organic and natural hurt her doctor said shes very healthy and probably more in line with what kids should be like.

I know each kid is different. My third is also breastfed but bigger than my second smaller than my first.

I am not concerned, yet. It is big for a girl but there are percentiles for a reason and somebody has to be that 100 percent. My son was 9.2 lbs and 22 inches at birth and 28lbs at a year. I nursed him for 19 months and he took a bottle for a few months. He was a great eater.
He is just your average size male in his 20s. You have time. Make sure her diet isn't junk and she runs and plays and she should slim down when she starts running.

If you do end up seeing a Pediatric Endocrinologist, they will take a long history and factor in genetics on both sides of the family. Were either of you large as children? And what are your heights as adults now?

Even if you or your husband are large people, I would recommend you still do the consult if she does not plateau by 15 mos ofage, as you really want to treat her as an individual and not just an expression of your genes.

My daughter was born in the 100 percentile and has never fit on a growth chart since. She's 17 and 6 ft. tall. My youngest daughter is 16 and is 5'4". NO, do not be worried. If her weight and height are proportionate, she's healthy.

My daughter was always off the charts. She was only 6 pounds 9 ounces at birth, but by her 2 month check up, she was at 100% for height and weight. Now she is 7 years old and she is the tallest in her class by almost a head, and I think she is in the 60 or 70th % for weight. I can't remember what it was exactally. Most people think she is 8 or 9 years old right now and she won't be 8 until March. I wouldn't worry about it.

Personally, I wouldn't get too alarmed at this point. My son has always been on the upper range of the growth charts...he was born at 7 lbs 14 ounces. During his first year and for a while there, the pediatrician was concerned about the size of his head. They measured him and then measured mine and my DH's heads. We actually had to do monthly head circumference checks for a while there. They finally determined that someone had measured incorrectly and larger heads just run in our family. Looking at my son, he does not appear to have a big head at all.

My daughter has been at the opposite side of the spectrum. She will be 5 in January and is just about 32 pounds. The pediatrician was concerned last year at her well check up and sent us to a dietician. The dietician did some measurements and determined that my daughter should be eating about 150 more calories per day than she was. She said that my daughter didn't look malnourished at all and was likely just small framed....

Different kids just have different body types and builds....

Same as others have said..my kids are 100%-ish in both respects and always have been. And both outgrew infant seat very fast, etc. tallest kids in their class, and my oldest needs to have smaller portions and exercise more than the younger. But neither of them have a problem or anything I or their doctors are worried about.

Mine has been since he was 6 months old. For about 15 minutes the doc was worried about his head size, till he saw a picture of my husband and then wasn't concerned (since he was meeting all his milesontes).

I wouldn't worry unless there are other problems. And I like the idea the other parent had of checking out other countries' growth charts. My son was breastfed till he was 2.5 - don't know if that made him more robust. He's not thin or fat, he's just dense. He is now a 4 foot tall, 60lb 5.5 year old. And no doc has ever suggested he see anyone about his growth. I don't understand why the doc would want growth to plateau either - that mean flatten out. To me that would be a bad thing if it was for any length of time.

Is your pediatrician using the World Health Organization's growth charts that the AAP says to use for the past few years? http://www.cdc.gov/growthcharts/who_charts.htm

Also, someone has to be at the 100th percentile, just like some kids have to be at the 5th or 25th!

My pediatrician went out and got a scandanavian growth and height chart for my son.

On the US chart, he was off of it, or in the top brackets. On the scandanavian one, he was 50's-60's.

My son was actually "little" for our family at only
10lbs 23.5 inches long at birth, and
37.5 inches at age 2.
((We have lots of 11 & 12lb babies in my family, and a lot of 6'6-6'8 adults, which means 40" at age 2))

He outgrew his 'infant' carseat before 6mo old (but I changed him at 6 mo)
He drank 20oz of milk or formula every 2 hours.
He didn't crawl until 8ish months
He didn't walk until well after a year old
((fast growing = slower on large motor milestones))

_____

I never viewed him being big or a fast as a problem.
BUT we have the genetics to make it not a problem

We're big people. I'm 6'1. My dad and brothers are 6'4. My mum is 5'11.5 (she's determined). Most of my girl cousins are 6'-6'3. My Uncles and several of my cousins are 6'6-6'9. My gramma (dad's side) is a throwback. She's 4'11. Waist high on most of her sons, can walk under the arms of her daughters. We're big'uns.

How big are you and your husband? If your daughter has been consistantly on the high end of the growth curve, I don't see the problem. Some people are just bigger than others.

Not a problem so far.
My son was 9 lbs 1.5 oz at birth.
The rule of thumb is - they double their birth weight by 5 months and roughly triple it by 1 yr.
My son was 25 lbs at 1 yr (so not quite tripled).
Once they get to crawling and walking (he walked at 14 months), they really slow down on the weight gain.
30 inches is not unusual for many babies at 1 yr.
How tall are you and hubby?
Have any other tall relatives?
I'm 5'5" and my husband is 6'1" (and we have some cousins and grandparents that are 6'4")..
The doctors always told us our son has the potential to reach 6'4".
Right now he's 14 yrs old and he 6' and it's not likely he's finished growing yet.
Our son has been at the top or slightly off the edge of the growth charts but it doesn't bother us.
It doesn't hurt to keep an eye on it, but so far it's not anything to worry about.

My experience is similiar but differnt. My son was 7 lb 15.5 oz at birth. He gained about a 15 oz a week for the first 3 months of his life (9 lb 12 oz at 2 weeks, 11 lb 10 oz at one month, and just shy of 19 lb at 3 months). He ate alot and was always active...rolled, scooted, crawled, and walked early He was at 95-99% throughout his first year. He did plateau a bit because at 6 months he weighed 20 lb and at 8 months 22 lbs and he stayed there for a while because he was super active. He was big enough that WIC wouldn't let him have peanut butter but the nurse looked at him and said she wasn't worried and allowed it.

He was also always adding weight and then growing while other kids tended to grow and then fill out. By the time he had started school he had evened out and no longer even "chubby".

pretty much same here and my husband is super tall so I figure my girls will be very tall. But now they're 6 and 8 and in the 80's Percentiles... My oldest's best friend though has tall but not as tall parents and she is just super tall. So you never know but don't worry. The chart is the key. If she kind of goes on a projectile, then consult a specialist. And if you need to, that's what they're there for. My mil took hormones as a teen to stop growing and she's in her 80's now and totally healthy. She stopped at 6 ft btw. I'll admit I don't want my daughters to be quite that tall but it's also not freakish at all. Each generation gets taller too.

I would not be worried. We are pretty much in the same boat here. My daughter was actually born at an average size, but pretty much right away she started growing like crazy! She has been off the charts for at least height (sometimes weight) her whole life. She's 5. My son was bigger, 9 lb 5oz at birth, and has been big his whole life too! He's 3 and is 95% height and 100th for weight. My husband and I are pretty normal size, neither of us very tall, so we're not sure where it comes from, but no one here is worried. I think that as long as you child is growing consistently, eating fairly well (for a 1 year old), and not having issues with bone or muscles, they are fine and will be fine.
