My 17 month old son has 8 teeth. He has four on top and four on the bottom. I am concerned because all his teeth are aligned on top and on the bottom the central incisors are alingned together and to the front. The lateral incisors which are positioned on each side of the central teeth are pushed further back but are aligned whith each other. My question is should the teeth be positioned like this? Is it normal? Will they move forward as soon as the other teeth start coming in? Has anybody else experienced this. I need to know because I am concerned. My son will be seeing a dentist for the first time next month but would like to know if I have anything to worry about. Remeber there not crooked there just alingned further back!!!!Are primary teeth always aligned evenly?

What can I do next?

I wouldn't worry at all. My teeth and two of my kids' were horribly crooked as baby teeth but my adult teeth and so far one of my girls' teeth have come back in perfectly straight.

You really can't tell at that stage because the mouth is still growing and changing shape.

My sons (all 3 of them) were not aligned properly either. The orthodontist loves our family. When their permanent teeth came in, they all had braces. We just unloaded $6K on braces for #3. Don't worry, they can always be fixed.

I wouldn't worry. Most of them are gonna fall out anyway :) Just wait and see what the dentist says. I'm sure he will be just fine.

One thing, don't stress over baby teeth. I thought my 14 yr old would need braces and she didn't. Her baby teeth were crooked and misaligned. talk to the denist about it. I'm a mother of three the oldest is 24 the youngest is 14. don't stress over things that most likely nothing to worry about. Take care and have alot of fun with your baby.

Yes - you should go ahead and worry...

About what specifically? I don't know...but with raising two little ones there'll be plenty to worry about.

Now - what are you going to change by worrying about the allignment of the primary teeth before you make it to that dental appointment?? Are you looking for a way to quickly get them straightened out before the appointment?

What you're doing is the RIGHT STUFF, mom... You're taking your guy to see the dentist! Regular dental visits are important for little ones. I'm glad to hear you see the value of the primary teeth and the role they play with the "adult" teeth.

But stop "worrying" and borrowing trouble. It solves nothing, just raises your blood pressure! And like I said...there's plenty more to worry about that you can actually DO something about :0) Talk to your dental professional and see what she/he says. :0)

His teeth will shift as others come in. I wouldn't worry about them as baby teeth. Just wait until the dentist sees them, he or she will be able to reassure you!

Hi A.:
As an orthodontist I will tell you not to worry about it for now.
It’s great that you are taking him to the dentist; ask him for advice after he examines your son. But most likely nothing should be done for now.
In general it is recommended to take your kids to the orthodontist for 1st check up at the age of 7.
Probably your son won’t have enough space for the permanent teeth, because the baby six front teeth should have spaces between them in order to have enough room for the adult dentition.
For most kids braces are done after all the permanent teeth are erupted (9 to 13 years old) if ortho treatment is required. But sometimes there is a need of early treatment (6 to 10 years old) in mixed dentition (when baby & adult teeth are present) to help make space for the permanent teeth or when orthopedic (to correct jaw grow problems) treatment needs to be done.
In some cases it is important to start with orthodontic treatment early (this not necessary means braces) to avoid that the permanent teeth that haven’t erupted yet get impacted in the bone. When teeth that are still in the bone don’t have enough space to come in, they could move to awkward places, requiring later gum surgeries to bring them into the mouth (like when they end up being in the roof of the mouth)
Also sometimes the orthodontist could tell the dentist which baby teeth need to be pulled out to help the adult teeth erupt in a better position, so early treatment sometimes does not require any type of appliance.
I hope this helps a little. Good luck.
Maria

My suggestion is to make sure you are taking him to see a pediadontist, they specialize in childrens teeth. Also, he will probably tell you not to worry about it untill all of the primary teeth are in or even until the adult teeth have replaced them...things can change so much between now and then.

Well I would take him to the dentist if you haven't yet, and I really wouldn't worry about it, unless it's bothering him, as far as having a hard time chewing or biting himself. My 2 year old had some fillings on his 3 top teeth and the dentist told me that either way, he is going to lose them sooner or later, they are just baby teeth.
