Hi Moms!
Now that my baby is getting bigger and eating more baby food we are having a problem with diaper odor smell! We use a diaper Genie. I have an Air Wisp in his room and I use the Glade things, but I feel like my whole house smells like diapers. (It seems to be worse when we have the windows opened instead of the AC on!) I am open for any suggestions you have--is there a good product out there I don't know about or a natural remedy? Any advice is appreciated!

We would wrap the diaper in newspaper, then put in a grocery bag. After this we would dump them in a trashbag in the garage. Hope it helps!

Hi L.,
I have found that the best way to keep the smell down is to
first, flush the bulk of the problem down the toilet, wrap up the diaper and use the sticky tabs on the diaper to seal it up,place the diaper in a small size plastc garbage bag, and the first chance you get... get it out of the house!
hope that helps.

Like many of the others, we got rid of our Diaper Genie really quickly. I did try the stage 2 refills and even those weren't the best. We use the trusty old plastic grocery bags and put them straight in the garage. The smell just makes me gag and those plastic pails hold onto that smell. EEEWWW! ;)

We don't have issues with this since we started flushing the contents of soiled diapers. Part of our routine, since DD was about 1 year old, is to flush the contents of the soiled diapers, throw it in the Diaper Dekor+ and then wash our hands in the sink. Now that DD is 2+, she knows that that's what we do and she helps.

It's better for the environment too.

HI,
You will probably have to pitch the diaper genie. I had the same problem once my little guy was bigger. I think they are only really good when they are little and their poop is little too.

Congrats on the baby, now the smelly thing, well first of all I found that the diaper gene does not hide odors very well, I use the diaper champ and you just use regular small garbage bags in it so you can use the bags with a scent. Second, put those stinky diapers in a jewel, target, etc.... bag and close it up or you can also purchase diaper bags with a scent. Do any of those and you should be odor free. Good luck and happy smelling :-)

Did you move to the stage two? We were having the very same issue when we switched to jar food and were still using the remainder of the stage one. I gave up and switched to the stage two and have had no problems since. They are much thicker and have more deoderant and work just fine.

I was going to advize you to use the Diaper Genie but I reread your email and you are already doing that. They do have toddler refills which are a green color versus the white colored ones. The green is thicker and made for toddler (smellier) diapers. Don't use Oust because of the toxins in there, if you read the back warnings it says to spray in one room and wait 24 hours to see if anyone has a reaction. There is a natural product by the name of Sol-U-Mel offered by Melaleuca. If dilluted it kills the smells and germs in the air and it is 100% safe. There web site is www.Melaleuca.com. I hope this helps.

I also used plastic grocery bags to wrap the diapers tightly and throw them outside as soon as possible, like many of the responses you received.
Some natural tips-
Use charcoal. Walmart sells odor-eating charcoal packages in the laundry aisle (where the hampers, etc are.) Baking soda in the bottom of your trashcans can help too- or maybe sit one of the venting Arm & Hammer boxes on top of a dresser in the diaper changing room.
As far as Glade Plug-ins, etc., please be careful with using these, as many of them (as well as candles) can emit lead into the air which can be breathed in by your baby and be damaging to his/her health!

We threw our diaper genie away. We just couldn't deal with the smell. The only solution we have found is to wrap the diaper tightly in a plastic bag and take them outside to our big trash can right away. Good luck!

Hi,
Actually, there are a couple of great natural products that I use here in my home. One is called Sol-U-Mel. It's a 3 in 1 cleaner and air deorderizer. The second one is called Sol-U-Guard. It's a botanical disinfectant that you may want to use in cleaning your diaper genie. Sol-U-Guard is the first botanical disinfectant to be approved by the EPA for use in hospitals, daycares, nursing homes, etc. Would you like to know more about these two products? I don't sell them but I can show you how you may purchase them.

Hi. Try keeping those plastic grocery bags and when you change your child, put the diaper in one of those bags and tie it up. Take them out daily.

I hate to tell you but I used two types of diaper pails and I figured out why after a few months neither worked. The plastic absorbs the smell somehow, no matter how much you clean them. We ended up using extra bags (plastic) from the grocery store and throwing them in a regular garbage or sometimes right into the outside garbage.

Hope this helps!

We also use the diaper champ, but I went from scented bags (like PP said) to giving it a good cleaning. Then weekly when I take the garbage out, I clean it with a lysol wipe, and spray with Oust. I also keep (and change weekly) a fabric softener sheet (on the bottom of the plastic container, not the bag), which I think helps a lot!

Make sure you switch to the stage 2 liners, and charcoal works great. Take a couple of charcoal briquets (the kind without lighter fluid in them) and put them in the bottom of the pail--not the bag. The charcoal soaks up the smells and you can throw them out and change them whenever you empty the genie.

I've been having the same problem with my diaper genie as well. I've tried washing it out, letting it soak, and nothing seems to work. I did stop using the diaper genie refills though and I went to the dollar store and I just use those now. They're scented a it works a little bit with the small, but not much.
I did try using one of those stickups on the bottom and then weekly cleanings. I have the oust sprayed in there as well, but all I've found is that it makes flowered scented diaper ick.

We don't use a diaper pail anymore because of the strong smell when changing the bag. I now use the kitchen stainless steel garbage can and extra grocery bag the stinky diapers. With the garbage can holding diapers AND regular garbage, the diaper smell is absorbed in the other garbage as well and the garbage can fills quicker so the bag is replaced more often. I have 4 1/2 (my 2 year old just in a pull up for sleep times) in diapers now with doing home day care and it's worked well for the stink. Plastic absorbs smells, so it surprised me that all the diaper pails seem to be plastic. The stainless steel helps to contain any smell there may be in the trash. Hope that helps as another idea.

I just use a small bathroom garbage can with grocery store bags in it. I wrap the diapers up very tighty as previously suggested then I empty into the big garage garbage can whenever it gets a stinky diaper in it. My diaper Genie always stunk up the place. I just got over the fancy scmancy pails and took em outside!

Hi, L. ~ We have the Diaper Dekor Plus and we have never had a problem with diaper odor. Of course, when we first open the pail it kind of smells, but other than that, my daughter's room has never had a diaper odor to it and she is now 20 months old. I have read and heard so many good things about this diaper pail and they are all true. I'm not sure if you were looking to invest in another diaper pail, but if you are I would highly recommend the Diaper Dekor Plus. A little FYI ~ the refill bags are kind of expensive and don't last as long as they claim they should. Good luck! L.

Hi there, I don't know if you do this or not, but is seems to help w/ odor. We wrap our diapers tightly before putting them in the diaper genie. When we remove them from baby, we fold them in half (similar to how they come out of the package), then we roll from the crotch up very tightly and take the velcro tabs and bind the rolled up diaper with them. Hope that helps!

We just put the diapers in a plastic grocery bag during the day, then tie it up and stick it in the trash can at night. If there is a super stinky one, it goes in 1, sometimes 2 plastic bags then in the garbage. No diaper smells in our house (most of the time, anyway)!

Good Luck
