I am new to the area, and also new to motherhood. My husband and I are beginning our family and I need to choose an ob/gyn and hospital. I have never had to choose my doctor with pregnancy in mind before. What should I look for in the hospitals in the area?

What can I do next?

Erica,

I just had a a baby girl in February. I had a wonderful experience with GBMC. It is one of the best hospitals around to give birth. My OB/GYNs practice there. Their names are Dr. Erdman (a woman), Dr. Ottenritter (actually delivered my baby), and Dr. Sigh (has delivered over 3,000 babies). I would highly reccommend these doctors and this hospital! Don't go to St. Agnes when you can choose the best. I also heard that St. Joe's hospital in Towson is wonderful!

Good Luck!

Amber

GBMC is amazing! Just had my c section there in Nov. 2007. My Dr. is Women's Capital Group. I also delived my first born at Ann Arundel Hosp. and that was equally as good. My ob there was Annapolis OBgyn. Good luck!

We focused on one thing. What the hospital's neonatal care (NICU)level was at that hospital. The hospital's website will tell you what level they are. Most in this area are level 3. I believe John Hopkins is level 1 or 2. Level 3 however is very good care in case of ICU type of emergency care and monitoring for babies. Also always keep in mind that the doctor that sees you or that you choose may not be the doctor that actually delivers your baby. I drove an hour to see my doctor for every appointment. I wanted him because of his experience with high risk pregnancies but ended up seeing his colleague who was on call when I went into labor in the middle of the night. He is very good and I had met him before but he was not the reason I chose that office. Keep in mind when searching for a doctor, that you are really checking out the whole practice's staff and doctors and not just one particular doctor. By the way Capital Wormen's Care is very good. They have offices all over this area. Hope this helps ?

I had my two at GBMC. My husband and I call it Hotel GBMC. No complaints at all. I felt like I was the only one on the ward. I have heard good and bad things about all the other local hospitals, but nothing negative about GBMC. There are many excellent OB/GYNs that work within the hospital. I love mine but she is no longer taking new patients. Good luck!!!!

Congratulations, first, on beginning your family! I'm not sure where you live but I highly recommend Capital Women's Care for ob/gyn (offices in Towson and Bel Air) and the hospital they are affiliated with is St. Joseph Medical Center (in Towson). I had a phenomenal experience with them when I delivered my daughter 17 months ago. The nurses and the entire staff at St. Joes were wonderful! I've never met a nicer, more knowledgeable, caring group of nurses and I've volunteered and worked in many hospitals.
Good luck making your decision.

Hi E.. I am not sure what area you are referring to but if it is DC I can help a little. Okay first you do not want to have your baby at Howard or Providence. I had children at both and I would not recommend them to anyone. Hospital Center is a really good hospital and their birthing rooms are really nice. They give tours etc along with birthing classes. So I would recommend finding a doctor who can deliver there. Now in Maryland my SIL and best friend had babies at Holy Cross. It would not be my first choice as the birthing rooms, and nurses weren't that great but neither one of them had a bad experience. You should look for a hospital that is family friendly. It sounds like that would be a given but not always. Ask questions about their policy for the delivery; number of people allowed in room, cameras/no cameras, number of nurses on staff at anyone time stuff like. oh also alot of hospitals let the baby stay with you the whole time you're there but not all of them, so if that's important to you check on that also. If you plan to nurse ask them about that. I told them that I was going to nurse and did not want the baby given bottles, everytime I turned around they were giving them bottles ( it makes getting them to latch on harder). I hope this helps.

I have Dr. Susie Chung and I love her. She delivered my youngest two children, one at Harbor Hospital one at St. Joseph's. Her office and St. Joe's are in Towson.

Last I heard she is accepting new patients.

E.,
Now is a great time to find a midwife and birthing center to have a birth the way YOU and your husband choose. If you prefer a hospital setting, there are midwives that do attend moms in hospitals as well. Midwives spend more time with you and focus more on normal birth than on what can go wrong.
Feel free to contact me, and I can give you several choices in the area.
