Advice About Rash

I have an 11 month old girl. We have been very lucky with diaper rashes up until this point. The only time we see anything it is just a couple of bumps if she has sat in a diaper with a bowel movement for any length of time. It seems like lately her BM's have been more sneaky so she's had a few bumps here and there. My mother is the main source of care when my fiance' and I are working. The other day my mom talked me into putting a little fresh aloe on the little bumps. Well now it is very red and dry. I believe she had a little reaction to the aloe. We discontinued use immediately. I have been using burt's bees diaper ointment on it since but it remains. Does anyone have any better advice on the best care for this rash. I am so dissapointed that I caused it and want to do the best thing to relieve it. We do not use many things on her because we like to be as natural as possible.
Thank you!
K.

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for the advice. I ended up going to the doctors and we were prescribed something for a yeast infection rash. Well I just discovered last night that we have thrush. We are taking natural steps to eliminate it. Using Flora and looking into gentian violet. I can't understand what happened because we don't take antibiotics or almost any prescription medication. I am also taking the flora. I hope we can take care of this!!! UGH!

You should have her pediatrician evaluate this, it could be a yeast infection and need Nystatin cream. Often, bathing with a bit of baking soda helps also, but don't do that until the pediatrician evaluates.
Also, never put Aloe to a rash area, Desetin ointment would have been a better choice.
Good luck and hope she's feeling better.

you may want to try corn starch, it's not harmful and if you mix the powder in a bowl with water and make it pastey it will harden and dry like a mask. I did this when my daughter broke out with a rash on her face. good luck!

Hi Kristen D. again. There are a couple of diaper rashes that u can use regular diaper rash cream. However if it seems to get worse when u apply or powder makes it worse she could have a yeast infection. If so she needs presriction diaper cream called Nystatin. It is made for that. They get it most likely from being on antibiotics. If she wasn't on medication I would use A+D ointment works real good and is soothing.

We tend to use the thick Desitin overnight cream which works wonders because it doesn't come off easily when we put on the diaper. Also - Beaudreaux's Butt Paste also is amazing. My doctor recommended that when my daughter had the norovirus and bad diarrhea.

I would also say giving her some time to "air out". We do that with Samantha once a day so she gets fresh air to those areas too.

GOOD LUCK!

My son doesn't get diaper rash that often, but I found that when he does, the best thing is fresh air - talk about natural! And then change her diaper often. Sometimes overnight can be a problem since we don't change the diaper as often, so I found that if I apply a lot of desitin (a thick coating) that not only helps it, it is a barrier against overnight wetness, preventing it from sitting against his skin which can make it worse. Since you did apply the aloe and it looked worse after, you might want to talk to her doctor, just to be sure.

hi, the best thing to do his keep her bottom very clean & dry. wash her bum with a mild baby soap instead of useing baby wipes. the wipes with an already irritaed bum can only make it worse. my son use to have extreme diaper rashes. along with many other medical issues. anyways let her be naked if possible too for short periods. for ointments use either desitin or a&d diaper rash cream. dont buy the ones with aloe or or creamy kinds....they actually have more chemicals in them that can make it much worse....we leanred the very hard way. if this doesnt work....this is another alternitive. take a small container & mix a whole tube of regular desitain, stomaheisive poweder(get from pediatrician), & a tube of nystatin cream(from pediatrician as well) & mix throughly. this ended up being our miracle diaper cream for our lil one. but just try the regular desitain....if its not blistering red then it should be fine. if it does continue to be yucky go to the peditricians & they can write a script for something else to help. good luck. luv always C.

My son also had very few diaper rashes, but the ones he did have were very bad. Our Dr. told us to use Desitin. we used it for all of them and we would LOAD ON THE CREAM!!!!! Put so much on so that when he only pees, you do not have to wipe him because the cream forms a good, solid barrier between the urine and his skin. The less you use wipes, the better when they have diaper rashes because even the most sensitive wipes will dry their skin even more. Also, he is at an age where it is VERY possible that it was just good timing and you did not cause the rash. Babies get rashes from colds or teething or many, many different things. I thought I had caused my sons first one also because I had tried to use up a package of scented wipes (because they had been freebies and he didn't appear to have sensitive skin.) I thought the rash was from that, but it actually ended up being related to a minor cold that was coming on, because after that, he would always get a little bit of diaper rash when he got a cold. So don't beat yourself up over it. It is a diaper rash which is very normal for kids to get!!
Good luck!

Good morning K.. The best treatment for my daughter when she has a diaper rash is a bath -- it works like magic. Then a touch of A&D when the diaper goes on. And to this day, she still refuses to tell me when her diaper is full! UGH.

Good luck and don't feel guilty... every baby & person reacts differetnly with just about everything.

K.,
I am in the medical field, I work as a physical therapist in the homecare industry and what really interested me about your post is that you are trying to use the most natural things possible. I believe I have a solution for you with the rash and helping you from any future issues with allergies, exzema etc.. We purchase products from a wellness company that has natural products that are 30-40% cheaper than Walmart prices! Also, I give presentations about how some items in the home are harmful especially to small children. I am doing one of these wellness presentations over the phone on Monday night at 8PM. If you are interested email me directly and I will give you the # to call. At the end of this call I will talk further about the wellness company that I mentioned earlier. I have 5 1/2 and 2 1/2 year old daughters and my youngest suffered from severe excema, allergies and asthma and when I switched to these safer products everything cleared up!!! The doctor could not believe it! I know that I can help you with this. You can even call me if you want to chat I live in RI ###-###-#### Please try to take the time to hear the information, it will help you and your family. Have a great day D. ____@____.com
In the meantime check out this site you can type in things that you use now for personal care and you will be shocked at some of the things that are harmful to you. I typed in Desitin because I used that on my girls and there was a red x in front of KNOWN TO CAUSE REPRODUCTIVE PROBLEMS!!! I was shocked and out raged.. I will discuss more during the presentation
Here is a site to check our personal care products to see their ranking as far as hazardous chemicals. Try typing in "shaving gel". Most are in the RED meaning they are highly dangerous!

It could be possible that she has a yeast infection and just needs a little lotrimin to clear it up. If the bumps look red like a pimple it is possible that it is a yeast infection on her skin. If so, the diaper rash cream will not clear it up. Get an over the counter ointment/cream with the ingredients that a lotrimin would have or lotrimin cream and it should clear it up within a few days to a week. Good luck

Dumb question, but did you call her Doc? Anytime my daughter's skins acts weird my Doc said to use Petrolium Jelly. I would call them. Your daughter might be allergic to the Burt's Bee's stuff even though it's all natural.

Hi Kristen~ I have a question...is it rough skin or actual "bumps"? With my children when it got bumpy it was usually a yeast infection and was because they were teething. Have you tried yogurt? Good luck!

3 Words... Boudreaux's Butt Paste!!
It works well for a rash that won't go away. I use bag balm as well, for rashes that aren't that bad. My daughter had a really bad rash for about 5 days and nothing worked... I put some Boudreauxs on it and it started clearing up within the next diaper change!
Good luck!

The best thing I've found is butt paste mixed with A&D ointment. It works quickly. Also, if you're breastfeeding, put some breastmilk on it & let it dry then do the ointments. Odd, but it works well. Good luck.

Hi,

Desitin worked really well for my children but put a coat of vaseline first because desitin is so hard to wipe off so when you bathe her and wipe the cream off it comes off easier. I havent had any rashes with my third child I been using this method since she was born and knock on wood it worked. Also check with your dr. I heard oatmeal baths are good too once a week but I am not sure of her age if its appropriate for her, just ask her dr. Good Luck!!!! J.

Hands down the best thing ever to prevent and heal diaper rash is "Bag Balm". It is used for cows utters. You can get it in the pet section at Walmart, or at Feed Store. It comes in a green square can. I had a maternity nurse in England and I used it on my baby. She called in a miracle cream because she had never seen anything work so well. It is perfectly safe for your baby. My son not once had diaper rash.

Good luck, S.

Hi K.-
My son had a rash from a very acidy BM and I cannot use zinc oxide on him as he is very sensitive to it and it burns his skin. I researched online and saw this:
Mix A&D (yellow ointment, not the one with zinc oxide) and pure cornstarch to make a thick paste. Put a good layer on the rash and by the next change it is so much better! It really worked well for my son and I didn't use anything else for a bad rash except this concoction. Good luck.

I really like the A&D Diaper Rash Ointment. My son usually doesn't get diaper rash but when he does we know a tooth is cutting through! Also, you can try letting your baby be without a diaper for a little bit. I've heard the fresh air really helps with diaper rash.
