How does an adult get Thrush? Is it really serious? Is it a side affect from something else more serious going on in the body? A family member of mine is very concerned about getting this and was told it could be something even more serious going on in her body? I know babies can get it from BF'ing. Any info you have would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thrush is a form of Candida in the mouth, nipples, etc or yeast overgrowth. I find that many people get an overgrowth from food choices (sugar, dairy mushrooms, breads, etc.) or antibiotics.

Many women get reoccurring yeast infections transmitted from their husbands, etc. Babies and moms can keep transmitting it through breastfeeding....very often caused by antibiotics given to mom and/or baby at the hospital.

I find that PB8, ThreeLac, etc., (with diet changes) can get rid of it. Oregano capsules with 70% carvacol works even better. Some people have used gentian violet for it.

It's just a yeast infection in the mouth. You have a terrible taste in your mouth, nothing tastes good, and it looks like you have a yellowish tongue. Your tongue does feel sensitive and a little sore. I've gotten it from antibiotics. My doctor offered me a mistatin prescription (I think that's what it was) - but last time I had it, I was on vacation and just made a point of eating yogurt twice a day and that seemed to speed it along. Honestly, I don't think it is serious so much as very bothersome, but I'm not a doctor and have no idea if it could be serious if left alone.

I got thrush, a yeast infection, in my mouth after having my wisdom teeth pulled as an adult. It was very uncomfortable, but I was given a liquid antibiotic and it cleared up with no lasting effects.

As mentioned, it is a fungal infection in the mouth. It is common and considered a mild infection in babies, but in adults you need to figure out what may be causing it, as their immune systems should be able to prevent them from getting infected. It can be secondary to antibiotics, to uncontrolled diabetes, it can be seen in people who have weakened immune systems from different diseases including AIDS, or who are undergoing chemotherapy, and it can also be caused by systemic (pills/shots) or inhaled steroids; that is why if you are placed on inhaled steroids, you are supposed to brush your teeth after every dose, to prevent from getting thrush.

My husband got it from taking antibiotics. It stripped all the good bacteria (the antibiotic) and he got thrush. It's painful and uncomfortable but the doctor gave him a prescription mouthwash and it took care of it. NOW he actively takes pro-biotics! Good luck!
