Hi, I am 28 years old and I have recently had a lot of trouble with acne. My face has become very oily (which I used to have clear and not to sound conceded but perfect skin). I was always complimented on my skin. Now It's horrible. I have never worn foundation or any make up on my face other than eyeliner, eye shadow and mascara. I have read reviews on proactiv and am not convinced. They say it is harsh on the skin. I am in need of advice on how to get rid of the acne and prevent breakouts. I used to wash my face every morning but now I have to wash it in the morning and at night due to the oily skin. Please help....I want my good skin back.

Side note...I do not think it is my diet...it has not changed other than the fact I am eating more salads with NO dressing.

What can I do next?

I tried ProActive and it just didn't work, total waste of money. I now use Melaleuca's "zap it" which is the only thing that I have found that works. I also use another product by Melaleuca, an anti aging serum which has helped even out my skin from acne marks and has really minimized my "frown lines" but that is another story.

For one thing, hormones can play a big role. It wouldn't hurt to run it by your doctor.

My son, who is 16, never had a blemish and suddenly, he started breaking out a lot. Hormones.
I got him some Proactive and in one week I can see a noticeable difference. His skin is so much better! And like I said, the difference is obvious.
It hasn't dried out his skin at all. It's actually kind of balanced things out.

The kit I ordered him contained a bar of soap and I tried it. I LOVE IT! I will order it again, for sure. I'm 49 and it cleans without overdrying. It feels like heaven. It's Proactive Solution Medicated Cleansing Bar and even though I don't have acne, I used it to test it. It's not harsh at all! I have sensitive skin and it tends to get dry in winter. The soap is the bomb.
My son also has sensitive skin and he's had no problems. Only improvement. He loves it.

I'm not trying to sell Proactive, I'm not a representative in any way.
I'm just saying that I got my son the $19.95 kid to try it out and it's been working great.
One thing I know is that using things that are too harsh can only make things worse. I definitely have seen the exact opposite with Proactive.
I have "older" skin and it hasn't been harsh with me at all.

It might be worth a try.
I used lots of different things for my son and this is working wonderfully.

Another thing I want to suggest is witch hazel as an astringent.
It's natural, not harsh, super cheap at any drug store. Apply with cotton balls.

I waited a long time seeing all the Proactive commercials before trying it.
It might not work for everyone, but it's defininitely working for my son.
And, like I said....the bar soap is amazing.

Best wishes!

With certain people that have very sensitive skin or allergies. Proactive is not a likely choice. It can be harsh. However, if your skin can handle it, its very good. Far better than some of the more expensive and less effective natural remedies.
I am 36, and like you had perfect skin as a teen. Occasional one or two blemish a month, but other than that. Beautiful, mark free, oil free skin. Didn't matter what I ate. I hit 30 and had my first baby. My skin to a dive into Oil-ville and hasn't regained its beauty since. I have horrible adult acne, plus I developed a nervous habit of picking at it, till I make sores.
I really dis-re guarded proactive as a gimmick and hoax. Till my 14 year old niece gave me her free sample order (she gets her friends to sign up for them so she gets a bunch of free product) in a week I was seeing a marked improvement. I ordered my own, and in a few months it has drastically reduced. Its not fully gone, and I better never forget to wash or I get a new crop pop up. Though I don't mind as long as I am not a pizza face at 36.

I tried proactive and it didn't do anything bad - it just didn't work at all. Then when I called they convinced me that some people just take longer to see results - I foolishly agreed so they didn't have to give my my $ back - seemed pretty dishonest to me. I tried lots of drugstore brands and nothing really helped. My friend started selling Mary Kay and I bought some stuff really just to help her out - but the combination of blemish control toner and their acne cream really works for me. If I run out of either, I break out again - I need both. Good luck!

Hi there,
I always recommend this product when an acne question comes up because it's been a life saver for me:

Neostrata Gel Plus AHA 15
http://www.skinstore.com/p-650-neostrata-lotion-plus-aha-...

I searched high and low, read all the reviews of the various products out there and this one seemed the best to me. I've been using it for about 2 years now and rarely, if ever, break out. It also leaves my skin soft and smooth and bonus! Diminishes fine lines and sun spots.

Anyway, it's a little on the pricey side, but one bottle lasts me about 6 months, so really it's a bargain. You use very little and I only use it at night. If you've never used a glycolic product, take it slow. You also may want to start off with a slightly lower AHA and this company does make one w/ less AHA to start out. Good luck!

Whatever you do DON'T USE PROACTIVE! I used it and WOW I looked great for about two months then I started to get these little bumps all over my skin (way worse than the acne) and they did not go away for months. It was awful.

With acne you have to keep in mind your mental state too. If you are stressed at all you will break out, as well as hormonal surges. If you are eating ok then you are probably fine there, just keep out refined sugar (it's in everything) and up your water intake.

I have found great success with Arbonne Clear Advantage. It is very mild in comparison to other products out there. I can hook you up with a consultant if you want to try it, it doesn't sell in retail stores.

One last thing you might want to consider is that sometimes you can be having an allergic reaction or even some other type of reaction on your skin the looks like acne. I thought I was having a breakout a few months back and it turned out it was shingles. Go figure.

Good luck!

Good luck!
