Adult Acne - Grapevine,TX

Hello! I have had adult acne ever since I had my first child - who is now 10. I'm done trying antibiotics that don't really work and really really want to try something natural. Maybe it's my diet? I'm not big on dairy other than the occasional slice of swiss on a sandwhich or glass of milk here and there. I drink organic milk. Don't drink or eat much junk food. UGH! Need help any suggestions? It's really gotten me down!

So What Happened?

Okay so right after I posted this I got tons of responses. Thank you ladies! Everyone's regimes are all so different. I have tried Arbonne, Proactive - both lines, Clinique, dermatologist, the list goes on. My husband swears in bacteria...so I went out on a limb and tried putting Neosporin on the affected areas and by morning the swelling and redness had gone down tremendously. I can't believe it! We will see if it continues to work. I've been using it for a couple of days now and I'm just amazed! I am still using my face cleanser line by Mario Badescu...which I just love! We will see! I am almost relieved that this may actually work! I'll keep you ladies updated! Thanks again for all your amazing responses!

I deduced that two things caused my adult acne:

1. Too much starchy food and sugars (ie pasta, bread, crackers, popcorn, sweets, honey, etc.). Cut back on these foods.

2. Too much omega 6 fat and not enough omega 3. Cut back on omega 6s (vegetable oils) and increase omega 3s (fish oil supplement, sardines, walnuts or pumpkin seeds only, grass fed beef, free range eggs)

Good luck.

I use Proactive. My skin was clear until I was 28. I went through specialist, over the counter items, prescriptions and nothing worked. One day I saw a commercial for Proactive and ordered it. I haven't had any problems with it at all! Proactive works great and my skin looks great!I don't have to watch what I eat either. You should try it.

So much advice! My son is 2 and I've struggled with post-prego acne as well. A lady I trust at a beauty supply outlet suggested I drink a cleansing drink. Ironic! I had been reading the book, Maker's Diet, and he suggests the same thing twice a day. Well, it's not the least bit tasty (I hold my nose and gulp down the 8 oz of green stuff) and after 3 days I've already noticed a difference in my face. She said my body needed to clear out the stuff that was left after pregancy. I use 2 tablespoons of Perfect Food Original (by Garden of Life) and 1 tablespoon of Super Seed Beyond Fiber (by Garden of Life) in 8oz of purified water, shake it up really well and GULP it down as fast as I can twice a day. I have gone organic with most of my diet so this was an added benefit. As for face cleansers, I haven't changed my Origins regime. I've added a grape wine peel once a week to bring the fresh cells to the surface. I hope you try something soon that works for you!

Hi,

I use products recommended by Paula Begoun. She has a website called cosmeticscop.com, and she has been featured on Oprah and the Fox morning show here in the Metroplex. She has a book out called, "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me." In it she rates all of the cosmetic companies out there. I use a combination of products that I can tell you about if you are interested, but her book and or her website will help you find something good for your skin. She's like the Consumer Reports for everything to do with your skin and hair.

Good luck!

I used AKN Skin Care by Nature's Way and it worked great for me. You can get the pills at a health food store. But eat a meal right after you take them so you don't get heartburn from the cayenne pepper in the capsules. It's only $9 a bottle and it totally got rid of my hormonal caused acne.

I tried all sorts of things from proactiv to theraputix and some helped, some made it worse. I heard a dermatologist on the radio one day saying to quit using any form of soap on your face. He suggested cetaphil and a few others. I tried cetaphil and within days I noticed a huge improvement. I tried antibiotics as well and they may have helped a little bit, but it was such a small improvement, I'm still not sure they really made a difference. I quit everything else and have just stuck with the cetaphil and FINALLY after a few years of being embarrassed by my skin, it's clear. Just try it for a week. Hope it helps you, too.

First, just hear me out. Go to the health food store or drugstore.com and buy "Dr. Brown's Pine tar soap" It smells really bad...like burnt wood. The smell does not last long...I promise. Read the testimonies on Drugstore.com. Also, change your pillowcase....alot! If you are a sweaty sleeper like me, it helps alot! This is an investment of about $5. Also, go to the dermatologist (after trying) and get Differin Gel. It is better than anything for making acne scars go away and brown spots. If you are in Frisco texas area, Family Health Market on Preston and Lebanon area has the soap. Good Luck

Jump on the Arbonne bandwagon. It natural and it WORKS! I had the same problem when I had my daughter, three years ago... the acne came and would not go away. Try the Clear Advantage line. It's close to proactive but natural with supplements to clear from the inside out! I can send you a sample if you're interested... Good luck and hang in there. There is hope but it's frustrating I know.

Believe everything you hear in those ProActive commercials, because it really is that great! It is the only thing that worked (and still works) for me. For about $20 for a starter package, it is well worth the investment. They will bill you monthly and continue to send you new boxes each month, so cancel after your first order. Since I don't use every day, I am still on my starter package...6 months later.

Hello L.,
I had a friend 6 years ago who had a bad case of acne. The medication she took was so strong, she had to have a pregnancy test done every two weeks-- just in case, and it wasn't helping any. Then we started use Arbonne skin care ---it was amazing !!! At first it seemed like she was allergic , her boils got bigger , but then, they all disappeared . She was so happy, she went around without any make up. She used the RE9 set, but there is an acne line, so you can try either one. If you don't know anyone who has Abonne products, you can go on Arbonne site and they will find someone in your area.

Hello -

Why does everything change after we have kids? I never had acne until I had my daughter. I noticed you said you have tried antibiotics. I recently went to a medical beauty place and they did a chemical peal. I also have found success with the microderm. I think my doctor said it was the hormone release that changed. I am not sure if that is what you are looking for but it is better than taking pills but can be a bit expensive. But if you got a chemical peel and then followed up with one of the at home microderm kits it might help. Hope that helps! I understand your frustration. Take care!

I'm on the Arbonne bandwagon, too, but for different reasons. Most adult acne, especially after having children, is hormonally related. check out johnleemd.com if you need more info than the bit I can give here. I'm a cancer survivor, and my cycles are normal but sometimes annovulatory - that means my body is not producing Progesterone in the second half of my cycle. Acne is 'fed' by estrogen that is unopposed by progesterone. Birth control is not the same - the progestins in it are actually a molecule closer to testosterone (one of the reasons a side effect can be acne). BC can also keep you from ovulating, adding to the problem. Low progesterone or excess estrogen from your food sources or environment cause the same problem, too much estrogen unchecked by progesterone. Oprah has had Dr. Oz talking about this lately, too!

If you are taking birth control, you can use Natural Family Planning instead at the same success rate as the pill, 99%. check out ccli.org for very affordable classes all over the metroplex for you and your hubby. My hubby was not on board until we went to classes. Now that I am not bloated, irritable, PMS, etc from the pill, he loves that we have made the change!

Arbonne has great skin care that is carcinogen free (safest I can tell from my research). They also have a progesterone cream called Prolief that I use on days 14-28 of my cycle to support my body in case I do not ovulate. It works great as a spot treatment for acne, too.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions. Helping other women learn from my past is a passion for me.

Blessings,

I have been taking a liquid supplement for a year now, and I heard my friend Cheryl, who has been taking it longer, say that she found that if she dabs what it left after she drinks the two ounces onto her adult acne, then it is quickly gone. Gets you well inside and out. Yesterday, I was walking my dogs, and I got stung by a wasp. I could feel the stinger hanging out of my neck, but couldn't pull it out. Such PAIN! Got home, got the stinger out, and remembering what Cheryl had said, dabbed some on the sting area on my neck. I was hurting so badly. Soon after that, it seemed to nutralize and the pain was gone. By evening, you could not even see where it had been swollen and red. All looked normal. Call if you want to know what it was I used. I am so glad I had the thought to use it on that.

Hello L.,

Well, I've tired Paul's Choice and that didn't work for me...I had to return that product. So the thing I'm using now is called ZENMED...a friend told me about this product. They give you some pills, cleansers, and a gel for your face. What it suppose to do is clean the toxins from the inside out....I've only been on it for a week....it's one of those 60 days money back guarantee. The website is www.zenmed.com. In my professional opinion, it sounds like a hormonal imbalance. There are a million ways to check that out. I use muscle testing in my office, there are other ways to check through saliva testing (which are more costly). After you figure that out, there are plenty of NATURAL ways to bump up your different hormones through supplementation. Talk to your doctor about it or find a doctor that is knowledgable in that area. If you don't find a doctor, check out this chiropractor:

I have this too. My Dermatologist put me on Spironolactone, which helps to block testosterone. Before you go medication, I would highly recommend that you start on a daily probiotic, which puts good bacteria into your system. This can help ward off any bad stuff so that your system can work on lesser issues, such as acne. I plan to try getting off the medication and going this route for awhile in a few months...I don't like being on medication, although I have no negative side effects from it.

A lot of people swear by proactive. I started using a face wash from Lush that has calyamine (sp?) lotion in it and it helped tons. Cetafil worked well too, but don't get in the mindset that if you have acne you shouldn't use moisturizer. It made it worse for me.

Children are the greatest gift in the world, but boy can they wreak havoc on our bodies!!

You might have your doctor test your hormone levels. Something might be out of whack since that first pregnancy. If it's only mildly out, it might not be worth it to correct it medically, but if not, it could really change your life to bring things back in line.

As someone whose had hormone issues for a while, it's amazing the difference that you feel when things are back in line. Things are corrected that I didn't even know were symptoms but just annoying little "issues" that I tried to treat with other products.

Good luck!

I totally understand, you are not alone! I have had acne issues since high school, well over 10 years ago. I seemed to have it pretty under control with Clinique products and Proactiv.
But then I had my sweet little girl and that really flared up my acne again. I felt like I looked terrible and I did not want to have to cake on the concealer and makeup just to go to the store. I was finally tired of Proactiv not working for me any longer and started to think that if a product was bleaching my towels that probably wasn't the most healthy thing to be putting on my skin.
I wanted to find something that would work and that would be a more organic and natural approach...I have found it!!! I started using the MyChelle Skin Care line...found at Central Market in Southlake. I am sure you could look it up online and find where else their products are sold. I use their Apple Brightening Cleanser that is filled with great ingredients and believe me, I have researched! It helps with hyperpigmentation left from sun damage and for me with the spots that acne has left behind...the results really have been pretty amazing. I also love their Clear Skin Serum which has kept my acne away!! I really didn't think I would find anything so gentle, but yet so effective. Their products are on the pricey side...around $20 for the cleanser and $28 for the serum and they are small bottles, but they last a long time! To me though, if it works I will pay for it!!!
I hope this helps you and if you have any questions just let me know! Blessings and hang in there, you will find something that works for you!

GO to the dermatologist. We use Dr. Allen Menter (one of the best in the area). He has since moved his office to Baylor downtown but he is FAR worth the drive. His PA's are very good as well.

I started going to him years ago for other reasons but I started taking my daughter for routine checks when she turned 11 just as a proactive approach.

We both have great skin. I use all Clinique and have since I was 11. She uses the Clinique acne wash and then has 2 gels from Dr. Menter called Duac and Differen. She is faithful with her facial cleansing and you can tell the difference. Her only issue is very mild and where she has bangs.

I would certainly see a Dr. to determine if it might be your diet or if you are just not responding to an Rx.

Best wishes.

During my 3rd pregnancy I switched from the anti-aging line that Arbonne has to their Clear Advantage line (anti-acne). So, actually I am on my 4th pregnancy now and I never switched back. The set has a supplement that you can take up to two times a day (I cut back to one once I had it under control) and the wash, toner & lotion. I love it. The supplement is healing you from the inside out. Find a friend who is a consultant to order it for you so you can get it at the discounted wholesale price. Good luck...I know it's frustrating.
