HI Moms,
I have ADD and have tried taking Adderall, but I can't handle the side effects(I get really irritable)
What have any of you with ADD been prescribed and had success with? Just curious, because I plan to have my MD
change my medication soon. Thank you for any info you can share.

What can I do next?

Strattera is a non stimulant ADHD medication that is approved for use in adults. It may make you less irritable. Concerta is methylphendedate, which is a different kind of stimulant, in the ritalin family (same generic medication, different delivery system) and for many people who cannot use adderall, methyphendate stimulants work better (and vice-verca.) There are also older drugs, one called Tennex, that has been reformulated into something called Intuniv, which is also not a stimulant, which is approved for ADHD in adults that has been very good for some people. My daughter (although a child) is doing very well with Intuniv. There are several others that may work better for you. Talk to your psychiatrist, they should be willing to give several things a try, and find the right help. We have had good success with a psychiatrist who does not take insurance plans, and we have to file ourselves, although it is more expensive, we can get in easily and quickly. Access is going to be a big obstical. You also might see if you can find a practice with a nurse practictioner, they may be more accessable and you could see them every month or couple of weeks while you try and find a fit for your ADHD.

Good luck!

Adderall XR was the only thing that worked for me. I have to take 40mg total a day. I know Vyvanse is pretty good. Concerta and Focalim are way too weak. Straterra made me sick, but may not for you. It didn't do anything for my concetration though.
Ohhh, I did take Dexedrine (it has just one of the ingredients of Adderall) and it worked pretty well for me. It's been around since the 70's...

I have been taking vyvanse for ADHD but not really sure if it helps. I have taken ritalin, intuniv, adderall, focolian xr and none of those help. I also take an antidepressant as well. I just started with a new Psychiatrist so it's trial and error so we will see.

Hope you find the right medication.

My DH takes Wellbutrin. It's a anti-depressant/Anti-Anxiety. But its prescribed for adult ADHD also.

My 13yr old son, who is as big as an adult, is on Intuniv. He was on Tenex for many years with much success, then switched to Intuniv, which is the extended release form of Tenex. We've tried Adderall and Strattera, both were total disasters for him - turned him into a mean, aggressive SOB. We may possibly consider adding Wellbutrin (per his psych's suggestion), but for now, I think he's doing just fine.
