Hi Moms,

Over the past 2 weeks I've become an insomniac. I can fall asleep but once 1,2,3am comes I'm wide awake.. As you all know trying to function and take care a 2.5 year old "ready to go" child is REALLY breaking me down :0( Oh and my patience is gone and I'm very cranky.
There's been a some stressful things going on in my life and I guess it all caught up to me. For the past 4 nights I've taken a zanax but i DO NOT want to rely on a prescription to help me sleep.... (I've always been a light sleeper and a long time ago I tried Ambien and it did the opposite on me)
Has anyone done acupuncture? What did you do it for? Did it help? How much does it cost? Would it even help for something like this?
I'm at a loss for what to do... I've tried so many "natural" pills and there NOT WORKING!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you moms SOOO much for your positive advice on going to get acupuncture! I was recommended to a Dr. Wu Lee in Boca (on Meadows drive), so I'm seeing him tomorrow morning ( on my bday, so hopefully it will be good luck for me)... He's been practicing for 48 years and from what I've heard really great... He's charging 80 for the 1st session and we'll take it from there..
THANKS AGAIN.. I'll update you to let you know how I liked it :0)

I am a huge advocate for acupuncture. I started going for my migraines, and it got me off my medications (Topomax and such) and into a better place. I highly recommend Nicole Mezoff. Her phone number is ###-###-####. She is WPB and Boca Raton. She is completely reasonable -- I think she charges about $80 for a 50-60 minute session. She takes the time to discuss what is going on in your life at the moment to use the best treatment for you. I haven't been to her in a while because I now see an acupuncturist who specializes in infertility, but she is great and I wish that I could see her for this issue. I think you have nothing to lose by trying it once -- it is a much better alternative to drugs! Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any other questions. I hope this helps.

Hi Kristy,

I did acupuncture when I was getting ready to go through my second in-vitro attempt. I think they put down "back pain" for me so my insurance would cover it. I just had to pay my copays, but it might be covered for insomnia, so you would have to ask.

I have to say the first several visits felt very relaxing!!! I don't know how it works, but I felt like I had just gotten a massage. I also have to say it was a bit painful for me but everyone is different. It was mostly in my lower legs that hurt. But it was well worth it.

I used Dr. Wei when she was in a different office, but our kids ended up going to the same preschool so she gave me her new number. She's in Lake Worth now ###-###-####. And yes the in-vitro worked this time! I do believe it helped in some way.

Good luck!

Kristy,
I have two wonderful resources for you. The first is Dr. Annalee Kitay who is a chiropractor who specializes in homeopathy, balancing the body thru Neural Organizational Technique, which is a non-invasive blend of accupuncture, kineseology and chiro. She can completely determine the systems that are off in your body and support you in a natural, holistic way. She is gentle and has produced wonderful results for me and my children, beyond what I can begin to write in this response. You should give her a call. She's in Boca ###-###-####.

I also have a traditional accupuncturist, Yintang, in east Boca. But my gut feeling is call Dr. Kitay. You will be extremely pleased!!

Hi Kristy~

I've tried acupuncture for lots of symptoms and it has worked well for many of them. The best acupuncture doctor in the area is Dr. Shao, and he is not expensive. First visit, I think $75, then $50. Best thing is, you probably will only need a couple of visits. Let me know how it goes. Best of luck to you.

Blessings,

Hey Kristy,
I have an AMAZING acupuncturist it's Turtle Island Medical Center. They are on Yamato and Federal. They are a husband/wife team who have studied Oriental Medicine for over 30 years or so. They use herbs and all sorts of alternative healing methods. You will LOVE them. They are away till Monday but you can ring and make an appt with Paula: ###-###-####
They can also help you feel less stress from what ails you.
Tell them I sent you (no kickbacks for me-don't worry)
In the meantime, have you tried HerbPharms Relaxing Sleep tonic from whole foods?

I've received acc. several times. it releases emotional issues, as least that's the effect it had on me. It also hurts. Several tiny pins are inserted all over; and it's expensive. Most likely not covered by health insurance.
Go to the health food store and ask for an herbal remedy for sleep. It will most likely have Valerian, Chammomile and Peppermint. It may come in the form of a capsule or a tea.
I know a wonderful medical intuitive who will get to the root cause and recommend an herbal tea blended just for you. But try the health store and give it a week to get into your system.

Here is what the doctor told me to do when I couldn't sleep.
For starters do not eat or drink anything that has caffeine in it....Exercise.....dance,jumping jacks, long walks, etc....You need to learn to sleep naturally and not rely on medical treatment for sleep. Avoid coffee, tea, soda, chocolate, etc. You can google to see what you should and shouldn't eat. Also, nothing to eat after 9:00. And the other thing the doctor said is to stop using the computer by 9:00 and let your brain relax. Read a good book or watch a funny movie. No violence. If you do all of this it should help. Also some new pillows might help. We went and got new pillows and that helped up both with getting a good nights sleep. My daughter gets dwon alternative pillows. And I also got us a new down alternative comforter when they were on clearance. That made a big difference in out sleep. I couldn't believe how much differene it made. You can also get the sprays for your pillow at bath and body works. These seem to help also. But do the natural things, they are best for you. A long relaxing bubble bath right before bed can also help. When I was having problems with sleep I would take a long bubble bath with a good book to read by candle light. By the time I was done I was relaxed and slept pretty good. Pamper yourself. You need to get rid of stress. Sit on the floor and play trucks, cars, anything with your son. Not only will it burn some of your energy but give you quality time with him. Also I have never done this but I have friends that say a five minute nap during the day makes a world of difference. But they said to never sleep more then 10 minutes during the day. Set an alarm if you choose to do this. When your son naps instead of stressing over housework do something fun for youself. I used to be a super clean freak but as I have gotten older I have learned to take my mothers advice and relax some. Wish I had listened to her more when the girls were little. She used to be a super clean freak when we were little so guess that's where I got it from. I always wished Mom would spend more time with me instead of cleaning. The housework will always be there but your son won't. Relax, enjoy life, stop stressing, worrying doesn't make things any better, just worse. Hope this info helps you out. Just remember ENJOY LIFE!!!!!

it works and can be used for something like that. it will help will your stress too.
try to limit caffiene intake and just "be healthy". i know this is common sense but those things go a long way with accupuncture.
check and see if your insurance covers it too. i was surprised to see ours did.

Cut out all caffeine. Even the ones hidden in foods, like chocolate. Don't eat anything spicy before bedtime. Try all calm activities before bed, just like kids. You can try getting a massage close to bed time. Will make you very relaxed naturally. Don't get a deep tissue but a swedish. You need to drink water afterwards, but not so much it will make you wake up to use the bath room.

Kristy,

I don't know about the acupuncture, but, have you considered how much caffeine you are taking in up to 4-5 hrs before bed time? I have had insomnia for 20 yrs and this is one of the things I have to avoid. What else have you tried specifically? Bendryl, natural sleepy time teas, relaxation techniques(they really do work ),clearing your mind of what's bothering you until the next day? I know some of this sounds corny, but, you really have to fix the cause and the result will be there for you. I've had to learn that 'ol prayer:Courage to accept the things you cannot change , change the things you can and learn to be wise enough to know the difference. Women are fixers naturally, but, we can't 'fix' some things,we just have to make the most of what we can. You won't be much good to anyone, esp your children ,if you don't take care of yourself, Learn to relax and it will pay off. I know often times that's easier said than done, but, give it your best shot ! Good Luck to you, C. S.

I tried acupuncture with great success for back and wrist pain in South Miami. I also had her throw in some fertility treatments when I was trying to get pregnant. It was very relaxing and the only needle that ever stung a little was in my foot. You'd be surprised!

I paid about $100 for the first visit and she billed my insurance for the following visits.

I would definitely try it! You have nothing to lose!

Hi,
I would think energy healing methods like acupuncture, acupressure, reiki, and whatever balances the chakras and meridians can help (in my view a combo of acupressure and energy field healing like reiki would be good)... though you'd still want to do some spiritual exercises and meditative stuff yourself to help release the mental stress that set off the sleep disturbance. Stress is merely our resistance to or lack of acceptance of whatever we perceive happening in our lives. Go to meetup.com and find the local meetups for reiki and other alternative healing methods. I know a few practitioners up your way, while I'm down in Miami myself.

I have done acupuncture. I did it when I was a week overdue and did not want to have to be induced. I went in that morning and was having contractions within the hour! The acupuncturist I went to used really small needles, so I can honestly say they didn't hurt! She also did something for stress, since I was OBVIOUSLY getting stressed at that point! That helped too. I really mellowed out. I would definitely say to try it. You might be surprised at how well it works.
Also, if there are stressful things going on in your life, there is a product by Life Extension called Stress Relief that has helped me. It is made of lemon balm and tea leaf extract. Obviously all natural, and it doesn't make you sleepy. You can also take melatonin to help you sleep.
Hope something helps! There is nothing more frustrating than lying in bed and not being able to fall asleep!

Ok, what is the underlying reason you cannot sleep-
I've seen great results w/ acupuncture, and w/ checking your nutrition- what have you been eating?
No sugar, enough water(divide your weight in 1/2, and what ever that number is- make that ozs- drink that amount of water daily for your kidneys to function correctly) no pop, if this doesn't work, cut out white flour anything- but really w/ a 2 yo- no drugs, really
check out Dr. Bruce West's Health Alert- he'll tell you nutrition that works.
go to the health food store and get Peter Gilliams Cal Mag= for lots of folks that is the ticket- your body is trying to tell you something- and that needs to be fixed
best of luck, and feel free to write me back-k

I work for an accupuncture physician and have seen AMAZING results from as little as 1 treatment. Obviously everyone is different but I would say try it!! It's better than becoming reliant on pills :(
Most health insurance will cover part of the cost so check it out - it may end up costing you a little up front but then once insurance kicks in you're set! Good luck

Yes, acupuncture works. I have used it for various health issues. It works on physical stuff and also can calm emotions. For some issues it can work in one treatment, for others it may take a series of treatments. I don't know any APs in your area, but I do highly recommend you try it. And if cost is prohibitive, you could always ask the AP if they have a sliding scale or are open to barter (a huge pot of soup for a treatment, etc.)

Sorry I can't recommend anyone in your area, but I used acupuncture for the exact same feeling starting in January of this year--it's amazing! Not only does it release any tension knots you may have in your muscles, but it also gets your energy flowing.

I'm pretty scientific and I always took people's mystical descriptions of acupuncture with a grain of salt, but I feel the same now. I got warm on one side, cool on the other, then it all swirled around and I felt so much lighter and more relaxed. And I'd always be in such a great, energetic, roll-with-it mood after. And that mood stays with me more and more now.

My acupunturist also helped me with my diet, so that's something to bring up.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that you get to lie down in a quiet, pleasant room without kids for an hour or so.... I would definitely try!
