Acne Products Without Benzoyl Peroxide or Salicylic Acid

I am interested in any OTC products that have been successful at treating acne but that do not contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. We are going to start trying to get pregnant again soon and my doctor has recommended in the past not to use these products during pregnancy. I typically use the Proactiv system but this contains benzoyl peroxide. Any recommendations would be so appreciated!

So What Happened?

I have been using an Olay cleanser with witch hazel for about 3 weeks and so far I haven't had any new breakouts, and the redness from my "healed" breakouts is finally going away. We'll see how it stands up to the crazy hormones of pregnancy or my period! Thanks for all the advice ladies!

You can wash your face with Milk of Magnesia to help cut down on the oiliness. For spot breakouts apply toothpaste (white kind) just like you would the Proactiv mask. It'll pull the oils out of the pimple and dry it up...it may not work in just one application like Proactiv but try for a couple of days and you should have the same results. I also really like the Skin Milk and the Vanicream products (both of which can be found at drugstore.com).

Funny, I never heard of the no benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid...would have never thought topical facial treatments would affect a baby that much.

I have found the ultimate solution!! I am 37 years old and have had oily icky skin all my life, I have tried everything under the sun - from drugstore cheap to mucho expensive. I recently found out that Milk of Magnesia is a home acne remedy. It sounded crazy to me at first, too - but I have been using it for about 6 weeks now and my skin has NEVER looked better. What you do is in the morning, right after washing your face, shake it up and apply it all over with cotton balls. (It always takes me more than one.) Once it is dry, rinse it off with cool water and apply your makeup. It controls your skin's oil production and does it without drying out your face. It has been amazing for me - I have never been happier with my skin. And it is soft and smooth. Some people use it 3-4 times a week and it works great for them. My skin is so oily that I use it every day. I understand that if your skin is not truly oily this may be a little harsh, but I have had no negative affects. The best thing about this is the price - $3.99 at Walgreens. Good luck!!

Mary Kay has a cleanser and moisturizer (Velocity)that works to help fight acne and you add the mask and toner once or twice a week to help even more. It is much milder than Proactive and has very little of those items in it. We recommend this for anyone that is pregnant and has any problems with acne. If you are interested let me know. Good Luck, J.

T. - Try using a mild, natural soap. Look for a handmade soap with no colorings or artificial fragrances. Those with rosemary, lavender, or tea tree oil can be especially good. I make my own, but you should have no trouble finding a soapmaker who sells those types.

I tried so many different things for adult acne, and mine always was worse during pregnancy, too. I finally got significant relief by switching to natural soaps and cosmetics with no parabens, preservatives, dyes, fragrances, or propylene glycol, PLUS dietary changes. It really all came together for me after I had food intolerence testing and eliminated the trigger foods from my diet. My body just works better altogether without those foods and without the artificial chemicals hampering my immune system. We found the same to be true for my daughters when they were teenagers, and still true in their 20s.

Good luck!

Go to www.biore.com and check out their products. I use the daily cleansing cloths and love them. They have a tab that you can click on to view the ingredients. I checked the cleansing cloths out and they do not contain those two ingredients in them. Hope this helps and good luck!!

Use Tea tree oil, it's helped me a lot, and I just started using it a week ago. Also, when you buy an OTC product, look for one with Natural enzymes and or spherical beads, as they help exfoliate with out damaging skin. Or even plain yogury works as a cleanser. You can also use sugar with seasme oil as a scrub, and for a mask use organic honey, or sage honey, or avocado & groud flax seed mixed. Lavendar oil also is a good cleansor with warm water. I got all this information on an "AOL beauty report" haven't tried any of it yet, except the tea tree oil. I just started using the Burt's Bees blemish stick, and I heard the Desert Essence Blemish stick works well. They contain tea tree oil and other natural things. Best of luck! I know battling acne is no fun as I do it everyday too = P

I would use Arbonne. It's better for you than Proactiv anyway... Botanically based, no parabens, fragrances, dyes, etc. They have a basic line called Intelligence "Not so basic" and they do have an acne line with a dietary supplement. If you want to e-mail me I can tell you how to get a 35% discount and could get you some samples.
Congratulations!

Hmm looks like you will have to talk to your dermatologist to find out the safest way. I was on tetrocycline (sp?) when I found out I was pregnant with my first baby but my doctor said it should have no effect on the baby since I stopped the use as soon as I found out. I am highly allergic to salicylic acid, if it even touches my face I break out in a horrible itchy rash all over my face and neck! But anyways, like I said, its going to have to be the doc that tells you whats best. But if I can make you feel better, I had pretty crappy skin until I got pregnant with my second baby, it all of a sudden got better. I thought it was just the pregnancy but hes almost 4 months old and its still under control. I do get a zit here and there when Im about to start but thats about it. I hope this happens for you! Hope it gets better, I feel your pain! Good luck with baby/making! =)

***I read your responses and Im going to use milk of magneisa! Its just sitting in my cabinet from when I was pregnant for "you know what". I never thought of that, maybe give that a try! I will let you know if it works for me!

I dislike my face now due to pregnancy I have severe breakouts not pizza face like but bumps on my cheeks followed by redness that won't go away I started to use Dove bar soap and that seems to help. But since my skin has become so sensitive to beauty products i'm unsure what to use.I plan to try Cetaphil a gentle cleanser but unsure of the ingredients.

I'd tried everything (including Proactiv) and nothing worked for me at all, except Clinique products. Since my skin is oily, I use the bar soap for oily skin, but they have normal/dry, also. I use it in the morning and at night and my face has been clear ever since the switch! They have other products that can be helpful, too, but just the bar soap has made a huge difference for me. Not sure where you live, but you can check out their website and find a place near you where it is sold. Hope that helps! Good luck!
