okay ladies~
this question has nothing to do with babies, but i thought i would ask. since getting pregnant in 05 i have noticed that my skin breaks out really bad. not everywhere, just my chin. and it's the ones that are deep, under the skin, that are painful. i have an antibiotic cream that i got from my dr. but it really doesn't seem to do much. i am 29 and my chin looks like a 12 yr. old boy with a football chin strap! haha. didn't know if anyone has had this problem and what you would recommend. thanks in advance!!

My best friend has always had problems with Acne, she got creams from the Dermatologist and they never worked. I think she was even getting some kind of shots also. She started using proactive form the info-mercial and it cleared her skin. That is the only thing she will use!!!

It helps with the breakouts and I noticed that when I start breaking out Proactive clears it ups within two days the most. I love the product. I hope this helps. Good luck with your search.

I had a similar issue, and my dermatologist prescribed Clenia for me. It's a miracle drug. It's like a moisturizer, so I can dab it on trouble spots under make-up. It clears up EVERYTHING. Hope this helps.

Hi H.,

I went through the same problem after my first pregnancy. It is definitely hormone related. I worked for a dermatologist for a few years and have seen several women go through the same thing with acne problems due to the hormone shifts before and after pregnancy. My advice to you is to find a dermatologist in your area that can find the right prescription that will work for you to help clear up the cystic acne (the really deep ones that hurt like heck). He/she will probably put you on an oral medication for the short term and then give you a maintenance cream like Retin-A. They may even suggest that you go back on birth-control pills to help regulate your hormones. In the mean time try products like Neutrogena, Cetaphil and Oil of Olay to wash and moisturize your skin. They do a great job of cleaning and moisturizing your face without blocking up your pores. What you want to look for is a product that says "noncomedogenic". (Meaning it won’t block your pores if you use it to wash and moisturize your face.) It’s a frustrating process trying to clear up acne. It honestly took a year before I was able to get rid of the cystic acne. Feel free to contact me personally if you want a list of dermatologists in the Akron/Stow area that are board certified.

I have a similar problem. My daughter was born in 05 as well and since that pregnancy I have had a lot more breakouts. My breakouts have always been on my chin area, though I never had bad acne or anything as a teen. Since my early 20s I haven't had but the occasional pimple, but since my last pregnancy I have more and they're leaving "scars" so to speak. I am also 29 years old. I didn't really mention it to my Dr - it didn't even occur to me. I just try to wash regularly with a good facial cleanser and use an exfoliating scrub and masque occasionally. It's not terrible - but a little embarrassing at this point in my life.

Hi H.,
I can feel your pain!!! I had my 2nd child at 34 and acne, terrible acne hit me hard about 3 months after giving birth. I had a little acne problem in my mid 20's but I began using Proactiv solution and yes it worked wonderfully. I stopped using it after a couple of years because it is so expensive. However, I have began using it again and it works very well. I also found some Extra Strength Proactiv on eBay that is a combination of benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid that really does work. My chin was exactly as you described and I hated it! Mine were those deep, into the skin and painful breakouts.
There is also this device that is sold at Walgreens that I hear is pretty good but it costs around $150. I have also found that using hot (hot as you can stand it) compresses on the breakout helps as well. I hope you find a solution!

my husband swears by peroxide. Get a wash rag put it on it and rub your face (kinda hard!) all of them will turn white then dry up and be gone
It works for us!

I have always struggled with acne and it is definitely hormonal-related, which means there isn't a WHOLE lot you can do. But a dermatologist could prescribe RetinA which worked the best for me, although it takes a couple weeks to really work. Nothing will work immediately, in the sense that it takes 2 weeks for the pimples to form in your hair follicle, so all you can do for anything that's already shown up is try and speed the healing. But the RetinA works in the follicles to prevent future eruptions. Is the antibiotic your doctor gave you Benzyl Peroxide 10%? If not, I'd ask for that. And again, you have to use it regularly, not just when you have pimples.
I'd be wary of taking anything while pregnant (or using a hormone patch), so whatever you do make sure to clear it with the OB first! But a dermatologist will have a lot more experience with skin problems.
Try not to irritate the area, for example, even putting your chin in your hands while you are sitting (to lean on the table for example) can make it worse--just like you said about the football chin strap!
By the way, my derm said not to use scrubbing masks, as they irritate the skin. He said to use either Neutrogena or Purpose face soaps, because they rinse completely while other soaps leave a residue (there could be other brands but those 2 are good for sure)--and that's it, no toners etc.
Lastly, are you putting any kind of moisturizer on your skin? If so, I would limit that or make sure it's oil free, because very few of them are truly not going to clog the pores.
I never tried ProActiv, sounds like it's worth a shot! Can anyone tell what's the active ingredient in it? Many of the acne systems out there use salicylic acid and that never did a thing for me.
Hope that helps!
Lynn
Forgot to mention that SUN works wonders against acne! I know it's something we all try to limit on our skin, but in your case it might be worth leaving the sunscreen off that area and getting 15 min of sun on it (before it gets too cold!) Of course, when you're pregnant, the sun may cause darkening of the skin, so it's up to you whether you want to try it.

Hi! I feel for you! I have the SAME problem. breakouts around the chin/neck. I went to the dr and he actually called them cysts bc they were so deep. He gave me an antibiotic, but said that creams and drugs are only "maintenance" treatments. The only "cure" is Acutane. He is a top dermatologist in the area and very well respected. He gave me info on the treatment and I am considering it, but it is somewhat involved. If you are interested further feel free to email me. I went back on birth control pills, started taking an antibiotic and use Neutrogena On The Spot treatement in that area. I am very well controlled with the combo of those things. Only a few a month. Hope that helps

Hi
I have also had this problem with no luck even prescriptions.I'm 31 and look 12 so its really hard for me I'm gong to try the baking soda thing thats one I never heard of. The only thing that has helped with the really oily ones is Toothpaste (no gel) it dries them out but doesn't get rid of them!

I used to get them on my chin and forehead really bad and then I figured out that I was in the habit of leaning my chin or my head against my hand while reading or on the computer. It has really cleared up since I've stopped. It sounds like yours is probably hormonal since it started after your pregnancy but you might want to pay attention to any habits that might cause you to touch your chin a lot or maybe even if you are sleeping on your arm or something. Also, I really like Biore Deep Cleaning Pore Strips and Cleansing cloths - they seem to work pretty well for me. Good luck!

Hi H.:
Sounds like a hormonal issue, in which case topical treatments (creams, washes, etc.) may not do much good. I had a similar issue when I went off my birth control pill a few years ago and I went to a MediSpa for a partial peel. MediSpas are run by docs so they can do more powerful treatments. And my aesthetician there has done much more for me than any of the dermatologists that I've ever been to. If you can spare the extra $$ (not covered by insurance, unfortunately) I recommend seeing a quality aethetician for an ongoing skin care program. If it is hormonal, it just takes some time...in the meantime, a doctor might be able to prescribe a pill that can help! Good luck!

Definalty sounds like your hormones are out of whack. I'd talk to your dr. about it, especially if anitbiotics aren't working. In the meantime, use a deep cleansing mask on the area (Neutragena makes a good one). Stress makes it worse too, although I know that's hard to avoid sometimes.
Hope this helps:)

Baking soda? It really dries things out, (such as rashes) so it might help.

Mix some with water to get a paste and scrub your chin with that. Lightly rinse, so there is still some soda on face and go to bed. when you wake up, wash your face again. I don't get horrible acne, but I have always had oily skin and I have to do this once a week (everyday on my period) or I get bad breakouts...

Do not do it more than once a week at first or it will dry out your skin. This is only a temporary fix until your dr can find something else to help. Birth control pills made me break out, but a suntan always clears up my back.

PROACTIV SOLUTIONS!!!! PROACTIV SOLUTIONS!!!! PROACTIV SOLUTIONS!!!! i broke out REALLY bad when i got pregnant to the point that a halloween mask wouldnt even help me! i tried the Proactiv solutions and within about a week i could see it working and within about a month my face was almost 100% cleared up. I had tried every over the counter medication cream and cleanser and even went to a dermatologist and that didn't help but this did! i can't say enough good things about their products but i would recomend getting the facial moisturizer lotion with your kit as well because your skin may dry out...i know mine did! try it and i garentee you will love it!

good luck,

The ONLY thing that I clean my face with since highschool (which is over 15 years ago...ugghh)is the regular gold dial soap either liquid or bar. When I started getting that puberty acne, this is what he told me to use and it works....if I got some crazy spots, I either dab rubbing alcohol on them or put toothpaste on them overnight(it will also pull the soreness out of them...also good on burns too!)....I know sounds crazy but works!!
Goodluck!

usually this is from the change in hormones, plus stress make us produce more estrogen, so our hormones are even more out of whack! Just don't over dry your skin! you will trick your skin into thinking that it is too dry and it will start producing more oil! I would try balancing your hormones. A ph balanced cleansing system, along w/ a hormone balancing cream. I have a friend who had the same problem. It is like a cystic acne under the skin that NEVER goes away! I have been using hoemone balancing cream for several months and not only do I love it, my hubby loves it too!! he doesn't dread that time anymore! If you want more info, email me @ ____@____.com, and I can send you some! Good Luck!

BHAs are the best for blemish prone skin because they exfoliate from inside the pore not just on the surface of the skin like AHAs, Neutrogena makes a good product here is the link the website describing the product: http://neutrogena.com/ProductsDetails_375.asp
hope the link works.

I also got really bad acne when I was pregnant. I started using that Proactive solution that they advertise on TV and in magazines. It cleared my acne up immediatley. I used it the whole time that I was pregnant. I had tried other stuff before that and nothing else worked.

i worked for an ob-gyn for about 5 years and i think your problem may be hormonal. that's why many women tend to break out before their period and while pregnant, it's just a change in hormones. are you on birth control or anything? that usually helps with the extra progestin and estrogen combo

I have had acne for so long I don't even remember when they started!! I am 31 now and would still have a real problem if it weren't for Proactiv!! I wish I would have started it sooner!! I read the other responses on here too and getting a facial from spas used to help clear up my skin too but that is kind of pricey to go on a regular basis. You can either become a memeber and receive it on a regular basis but I just buy mine from people on ebay! That way, I just get it whenever I need it. There is a cheaper brand that is like Proactiv that you can get at either CVS or Walgreens, I can't remember which. I think it was called ACNE FREE. It kind of worked but not as good as Proactiv.
