My 7 week old daughter has been put on Prevacid, has been on it over a week now, and it still isn't working. I've called the gastroenterologist, he's changed her medicine from Zantac to Prevacid, her dose from a 1/2 tab to a whole one, then from one whole tab at night to 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at night and Mylanta as needed. My problem is every time it's changed, she does okay for a couple of days and then it's like the meds stop working. And the Mylanta gives her diarhhea. She's also on that Nutramigen formula. Has anyone else had this much of a problem controlling acid reflux, and what finally worked?

What can I do next?

I am going through the same thing right now with my 5 week old. She has been on Zantac and now Axid. Both worked the first day or two and then same thing. She just won't sleep and is just miserable all day! She too is on Nutramegen. I am at a loss. I am waiting to hear from the Pediatrician again to see what to do next. All I can say is just cuddle her and keep her as happy as possible.

I went through the same thing. I ended up asking for a referral to a gastroenterologist (ST. Joseph's - Dr. Winesette) and she's now on Prilosec (instead of Zantac which didn't do much). It's not a cure, but it helps them be as comfortable as possible with the acid that comes up. Also, just know it gets easier with time. Mine's now almost 6 months old and she had it really, really bad. Sleep gets better. Try to keep her propped up during and after feedings and even during sleep. Once she gets to 4 months old, you will be able to add some rice cereal to her bottles and start her on some spoon cereal and veggies/fruits to help keep things down. Hang in there!! She'll outgrow it eventually - that's what I keep telling myself... And again, just cuddle her and try to comfort her. Best wishes for you & baby!!

R.,
My mom saw a report on Doctors giving kids these meds only because they get a kick back on these meds. A newborn does not need acid reflux med. Alot of newborns throw up their formula, just find the right one that works! In my days all of this stuff was normal, now all of a sudden there is medication for everything. I don't get it! Doctors get kickbacks from medication. It has become a huge money thing. Go to a natural food market and talk to someone there, they can help. My daughters ped. doc. tried to put my granddaughter on prevacid and my daughter refused. We went to the health food store and got some acidopholis and a few other items. She is fine now. Because of your daughters age I would talk to a health food store like Chuck's Natural Food Market.
Very Sincerely,
L. Jacobs

My daughter was on the same meds, and they didnt work! Same formula, she did good with it. They put her on Axid. She did great with it! She is almost 10 months old now, and has been off of it for 1 month, and she's doing great! Good luck!

My daughter also had reflux and was on Zantac. The meds helped her, but it took us 3 months to figure out that she had a food allergy to cow's milk as well and that was causing her discomfort. Maybe there is something else going on with your baby. Once we switched her formula to Pregestimil for the allergy she felt much better. You should check with the doctor again and let them know what you're doing isn't working maybe they can run more tests. Good Luck!

I had just as much problem with my youngest who is now 19 months old. What I learned is that nothing really stops the spitting, the meds are really only there to help neutralize the stomach acid so it doesnt hurt them when they do reflux. I really wish you all the luck in the world, though it is hard a discouraging and sometimes can be pretty disgusting it does pass. At about 11 months old we were able to stop Jason's med's and by 13 months old he was no longer spitting at all. you will make it!!

Hi R., my 8 month old daughter has had reflux since 1 month old. At first they said it was colic but we had an xray and it show reflux. She use to cry for hours on end! She has also had a swallow study and found aspirations (liquid getting into her airway.) We used tagament for awhile, then prevacid liquid form, and now prevacid tablets. It does NOT stop the spitting up - all it does is protect their esphogus from getting a hole due to the acid coming back up from their stomach. As long as she is not crying uncontrollablly - all i can recommend is buying lots of bibs, burb cloths, and being patient because our GI Dr said it could last until 18 months old. I do have a friend whose son is 14 months and still spits-up but she said it's getting better. We have tried every formula and it does not make a difference. Just try to hang in there!

Hi R.,

My son has been on Zantac for 12 weeks now. It took 2 weeks to start working correctly. He gets 1 mL 3 times a day. We also tried Prilosec..but found it didn't work as well as the Zantac. He still frequenly spits up at 4 months old..but he no longer has the agonizing/screaming pain he once had.
My pediatrician didn't want me to use Mylanta...though I asked more than once. Though, I have friends who used it for their babies after each feeding and it did work. Check out Dr. Sears web site for more information on refluxing. It has been a Godsend to me.

S., mommy to Robby who is now 4 months old.
