Both of my kids had it when the were new borns. My daughter was a lot worse then my son. We had to put her on Enfimil AR, it has rice cereal premixed in it. With my son we ended up puting him on soy formula. Good Luck it does get better!

My son was diagnosed with reflux at a young age as well. If he does have reflux either take him to his pediatrician or a Gastroenterologist and have him looked at. My son is on prevacid and has been for a long time. It will eventually (it will take a long while so don't get worried) eat away at the esophagus and just get worse. My advice, sit him up for AT LEAST 15 - 20 minutes after each feeding and have him sleep raised up a bit if you can. SOme people put a phne book under one end of the crib. He really should see a dr, there are some tests they can run to see if in fact that is the problem and give him some medicine to help him feel better. You might also want to try changing his formula to Soy formula and put 1 - 2 tsp of rice cereal is his bottle (I really ddn't like that so we did the soy formula and medicine.)
Good Luck!

My son had this too. Our doctor suggested we put 1-2 tsp. of cereal in his bottle to help the formula stay in his stomach. But she also prescribed Pepcid for him. For infants it is a liquid form and dispensed by a pharmacy so you will need a prescription for it. About two days after starting on this our son was a totally different child. No more 2 hours of walking to get him to fall asleep. Most children outgrow this by 12 months. I think he went off the medicine by 9 months. Go see your doctor ASAP for your own piece of mind.

Good Luck!

Hello there. I just had baby number three 2 and half weeks ago, and all 3 of my children have had this. My daughter (my oldest), had it so bad that is was freezing her esophogus and cutting off her air supply, no one beleived me until they did an 18 hour test and determined that there was something wrong. I kept telling him that she would stop breathing, like she was choking on something. After some meds, and a change in formula ( we went to alimentium.. that stuff is the greatest), also, I would let her sleep in her carseat, to help eliminate some of the acid, and it works.. my son was born 2 years later, this time, I knew already what to look for, I tried soy formula with him but it made him sick, so I switched to alimentium again, letting him sleep part of the time after feedings up right in carseat, and we were able to keep it under control. My new baby girl has it too, I have a new ped, and he told me 80 percent of babies are born with acid reflux, and he told me to have her sleep in her carseat, or hold her upright for 20 mins after feedings, which is something I had done in the past.. I truly beleive that reg similac or similac advance is way too strong and adds to the acid reflux. With my new baby, she is showing signs of reaction to the similac, I tried 2 days of soy formula, she wouldnt sleep on the soy, so on our visit this teus to the ped. im having him switch her to alimentium.. It is a bit expensive, but it is well worth it.

Definitely follow up with your pediatrician. My 17-month-old daughter has had reflux her whole life. It is finally under control now with twice-daily Prilosec, but it was a long road for us figuring out the right treatment for her. I wish I knew then what I know now.

The best advice I can give you is to keep up communication with your pediatrician as you work your son's treatment out. If the treatment your doctor recommends is not working, let them know (listen to your maternal gut instinct here). It wasn't until my daughter stopped growing between six and nine months did the pediatrician really get on the ball to properly diagnose and treat her. At that point, she was spitting up at least ten times per day and just could not hold down enough nutrients. Zantac worked for us to stop the pain, but the spit up continued and only worsened as she got bigger and ate more food. Prilosec (a stronger drug) finally worked to stop the pain and the spitting.

There are several medications for reflux, and the good news is that most kids grow out of it. My daughter is currently on a lower dose for her weight--we're trying to "wean" her off the medication as she grows--so far, so good. Another thing that helps with the little ones is propping their crib mattress up a few inches at the head so they can sleep more comfortably (we put folded towels under her mattress).

Please feel free to contact me if I can help. Good luck!

Hi Maria,
My little guy has acid reflux too. Right now he is on 2 meds. He takes 2ml of Reglan 3 times a day and a 30mg Previcid tablet. I give him 1/2 of the Previcid tab at a time. I really watch what my son eats, but your little guy is too young to eat table food. Foods that are fried and tomato products sometimes make my son sick. Hopefully your little one will grow out of this. Hope what I have shared with you helps. It's more of the helpless felling that come with this, I know that is how I feel when my son gets sick. GOOD LUCK!!

I am a M. of two bright kids and little one is still breastfeeding (I am planning to wean). Both my babies were having the reflux and constipation issues since their birth time and both time babies magic tea soothed them. I always kept this tea in my home to treat any tummy trouble in my babies.

well with my son they did a few tests to actually see that it was reflux including an xray and then put him on a perscription, zantac i think it was. and he was on it till his first birthday when he outgrew the condition. it can be serious and very painful though so be sure to follow up on this. good luck.

My son also had an extreme case of acid reflux. At the time, the dr. prescribed Zantac, which worked wonders for him. (We had it specially made at the Lee-Silsby Pharmacy, because the taste of the regular Zantac was so terrible.) He slept in his bouncy seat until he was 5 months old (and he was able to sit-up!) Although he got much better when he was upright (he was an early walker at 8 months), he didn't really outgrow it until he was 18 months...he's 2 1/2 now, and he'll still occasionally spit up.
The idea of medicating my 4 week old was terrifying, but he was a completely different child once it kicked in...it is hereditary, too...my hubby and I both had it as infants.
Good Luck!

Both of my kids had this problem but we handled it differently with each one. Thankfully we never needed a specialist. I would start with your pediatrician first.

With my son, we switched him to a lactose-free dairy formula at just a few months old. Similac makes one, but I can't remember what it is called. He wouldn't eat the soy version. When he was a year he was able to switch to regular milk just fine. He still has issues once and a while when he eats fruit or anything that is acidic (and of course he loves fruit!) but Tums seems to help him. He is 10 years now.

My daughter had issues when she started eating solids. Her pediatrician had me break up capsules (of Prevacid I think) and mix it in her cereal. After about a month it seemed to pass.

Hopefully your child will outgrow this too. My doc also told me not to put them in a carrier or infant seat right after eating because it adds pressure to their stomach (wait at least 20 mins).

Good luck!

My son has the same thing. Well, he's almost outgrown it now, at 18 months. But he was 8 weeks premature, and we would go thru 10 outfits a day, because of his reflux issues. Speak to your pediatrician about it. He/she may put your son on reflux meds. Sometimes they can help. In the meantime, try keeping your son in a more upright position during/after feedings. We used a bouncy seat and the carseat often. Even for sleeping. You can put a pillow under the crib MATTRESS, too, to elevate him a bit.

Hello,
Both of my kids had acid reflux as an infant. You'll need to find a GI doctor. Your doctor can help you find one.
They will probably start your child on some acid reflux medicine. My daughter was on Zantac it's a liquid and I can't remember if it can be flavored. She also tried prevacid and was allergic to it.
My son however was on prevacid disolving tablets and did fine with it. You dissolve it in a little bit of water in a seringe and give it to them. He did well with it.
I would sometimes put it in his bottle too.
We also had to thicken their formula with rice cereal.
The GI doctor will probably have you do that.
They normally outgrow it by 1 year. My children both did.
The GI doctor my son saw here in Ohio was Dr. Taxman. We drove a ways to see him but I think he also sees patients in one of the nearby hospitals.
Your pediatrician should be able to refer you in the right direction.
Good luck:)

My little brother was born with acid reflux and when he was too young for prescription medications the doctor told us to give him small doses of mylanta. Maybe you could talk to your doctor to see if that could be something to try with your son.

My daughter, who is now 1 year old, had acid reflux, she was like the exorcist child, vomiting across the room, they placed her on zantac and as she got older she had to be placed on prevacid, she has now outgrown the reflux, but the meds helped her alot, good luck.

you may need to swith him to a soy formula if you're bottle feeding and also add a couple tbl. sp. of cereal to his milk that should help...is he colic (crying alot)? sleeping well?? gaining weight?? if he's showing any of these signs, he may be sensitive to dairy and need the soy. Take him to see his doctor if the soy and cereal don't help....good luck hun!
