A Question for Laundry Experts

What is non-chlorine bleach?

I recently got a bunch of hand-me-down clothes for my daughter. Some have stains, so I would like to get rid of them before I have her wear them. The washing instructions on the tag says "non-chlorine bleach only." Will non-chlorine bleach help get rid of the stains like Clorox bleach? I thought all bleach had chlorine.

What can I do next?

Non-chlorine bleach is Clorox 2 or Oxyclean. My advice, get oxyclean powder - put the stained laundry in the washing machine with oxyclean, fill the basin and then stop and let it all soak overnight. (or in a deep sink) In the morning drain the washing machine and start the cycle as normal with detergent. If the stains are going to come out they will come out this way. If they don't come out after soaking in oxyclean soluation overnight they're never coming out...

Recently, I started using dishwasher powder to clean tough stains on clothes. I read online to put the clothes in a bucket with the powder and water. Swirl the clothes around and let sit until the stains are gone. So far, I have had success with using this method especially in getting my son's white socks clean.

Just thought I would share this in case nothing else works. :)

there's only so much wrestling i'm willing to do for stained clothes. i'll either pre-treat with the laundry detergent itself or use the spray stuff, but if a good stain-fighter and a good wash don't take care of it, it's into the rag pile.

Not all bleach has chlorine bleach. If you use chlorine bleach on those clothes they will yellow.

I've had the best results soaking clothes in an oxyclean solution. I've begun using a Tide product that says it will remove the toughest stains and old stains. The bottle is as large as those for detergent. It's applied directly to the stain before putting garment in washer. Use regular detergent for the load. It has removed stains except for grease stains.

I use Clorox II sometimes.

However, MOST of the time, I pre-treat with spray and wash OR I simply use laundry detergent directly on the stain and let it sit for a while before washing it.

Also, if a stain is grease based a little bit of pre-treatment with Dawn works perfectly.

I don't know if you'll be able to remove stains that are set in but it is worth a shot. Remember that time = $$ and if a stain does not come out for me, that piece of clothing is put out of use or for yard work day use.

Good luck.

I second the oxi clean. It comes in various forms. The gel stick is good for stubborn stains, and then I have some in a can (crystal form) that I add to the wash. So far, it's been good on whites and on colors, and I like that I don't have to think about it - just goes in washer with regular detergent.

I never really tought about it. The only bleach I have in my house is Comet cleanser. I use Oxyclean for any stains. My 2 youngest are extremely rough on their clothes, especially my daughter. With few exceptions, the Oxyclean powder gets it all out. If the stain is not too bad, I put a scoop into a dishtub and soak the clothes for a day. If it is pretty bad, I put the powder directly on the stain after throughly wetting the clothing and then sprinkle a little water on it. Let it sit for a day. I cannot afford to buy new clothes every time she ruins something.

The only clothes that the Oxy has messed up are from Justice. THey get discolored.

Oxi-clean or any spray on stain pretreatment is worth trying. Not all bleaches are chlorine based, and they are much safer. You'll see tons of brands in the detergent aisle at any large supermarket. Chlorine is only for whites anyway, and it is terrible for the environment so a lot of people avoid it for that reason. All that stuff eventually leaches into the ground water. It also causes nerve damage if there's a lot of exposure to the skin.

The best thing is to pretreat, then wash, then air dry rather than use the dryer until you make sure the stains are out. Sometimes a second treatment is required.
